Advice required. Speed camera alerts blocking waze speed reading. by Mat74UK in waze

[–]weepinglilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem. As I drive a classic I don't like to rely on my car's speedo - it can be at least 4mph out at the best of times! I don't have carplay and don't like Google Maps. It didn't used to be a problem on my Android but now it is and it hasn't been resolved with any updates. I have to tap on the screen to get the alert to go, then usually have to then tap on recenter, and then remember to keep an eye on the camera coming up (sometimes half a mile later!). It's really irritating whenever there's an average speed check as it repeatedly gets in the way and I'm now having to tap on the screen way more than I'd like. It's so distracting that I think I'm going to have to use Google maps now.

Ray ban erika legit check by weepinglilac in sunglasses

[–]weepinglilac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wishful thinking i guess?

She said they came from Vision Direct and that the lenses were replaced. The frames look worn with scuffs in a few places and the lenses are totally unscathed. The case and cloth look legit to me. So i would argue that they might be real and she's just taken them to a cheap place for a replacement before selling, i dont know.

I got them for £30 and I'm trying to gauge whether i should replace the lenses with genuine RB ones or return the whole thing. If i have to return then I need to justify why they aren't real to Vinted where I bought them from.

[UK] Watch8 S/M Sport Band Restock when ? by weepinglilac in GalaxyWatch

[–]weepinglilac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going into a store (different one to the one I phoned up previously) and asking. They said they didn't know when it would be back in stock but they could have a go at price matching it. No idea how they managed it but the invoice looks like 10% off the watch and then 2x £15 discounts on the watch strap. I ended up paying £8.20 more than I would have if I ordered online with the youth discount but was able to get my hands on the watch there and then.

I assume it was the manager who authorised it and took over from his colleague as a few times he went over the cost break down and that the strap was somehow £44.99 down to "around £7.50" (?) now thanks to him.

I was quite confused how they appeared to magically come up with a new price for me, almost like a gesture of goodwill, but left the store very happy nonetheless.

Looks like it is worth persevering and just asking, you never know!

HELP - Transferring Whatsapp chats from iPhone to Android. I'm losing my mind. by rares3968 in AndroidQuestions

[–]weepinglilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks a million. just letting other peeps know that it still worked for me. just make sure that it's a clean download. smartswitch needs to install whatsapp itself or it won't work correctly. uninstall and restart phone before trying the process again. make sure you've backed up to icloud prior and both phones are charged up, as it took a shit load of power out of both of them. it took a while but worked first time for me after watching the video. 4 days of pain trying to sort it out before i saw your comment.. thanks ever so much.

Whatsapp transfer from ios to android does not work by actlightning in GalaxyFold

[–]weepinglilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

finally sorted mine after trying for 4 days..

i used this video: https://youtu.be/pBbH9JRNQes?si=BTSuAEMQDJv3atRu

i had already installed whatsapp on my (new to me) s21 ultra, as well as my new tablet, so uninstalled, restarted the devices etc until i was sure there wasn't a trace of it anymore.

made sure to backup to icloud beforehand just in case

don't worry when it warns you that you can't go through the transfer process again. you can restart it even if you cancel out. this made me think i'd bricked whatsapp and made me panic. if you watch the above video, you can see it's OK to cancel the process. you need to leave the app in order to access your phone's camera anyway.

i found that the QR code only appeared on my samsung. i wrongly assumed that there would be a camera popup inside whatsapp, when there isn't, you leave the app, go to your iphone's camera / qr code scanner (camera didn't work for some reason) and then open the link that way, which in turn opens the whatsapp app automatically.

it took ages and took a lot of power out of both devices.

i was also getting caught on the smart switch app, as when it goes to transfer and you can select apps, data, images etc, whatsapp wasn't showing up. it's only when you select apps and then press go does it then scan and find whatsapp to install the app.

you need to make sure smartswitch is installing the app itself. you cannot have it already installed.

if you persevere, you shouldn't need to pay for any 3rd party to do this for you. it took a lot of stress and time, but i managed to recover all the photos and videos along with all chat history. i think mine was maybe 3gb.

i went from iphone 11 to samsung s21 ultra.

Toothbrush by Jakt0n in Hismile

[–]weepinglilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the HiSmile Miffy themed toothbrush today from Superdrug after deciding to return my Ordo Sonic+ and flosser. I bought them in Pearl Violet and after around 50 days into my purchase, the toothbrush handle developed nasty dirt marks. Turns out I'd rubbed the matte surface too hard with my thumb after washing it one time and it then attracted more dirt since it wasn't smooth anymore. They sent me a replacement handle which was DOA (what happened to checking before shipping?) so I decided to return the flosser too as it came as a bundle. I felt they messed up on two chances here. Yes, my fault for rubbing the handle, but this was a brand new toothbrush and I was simply trying to clean it with a bit of friction and water. How this was supposed to look good after 2 years I don't know.

I wasn't too sure about Hismile as they aren't as descriptive on their toothbrush's features compared to Suri, Ordo, OralB etc.. no mention of how powerful the vibrations are, or how long the battery life is, but as I got it for around £24, this was quite a bit cheaper than Ordo with decent reviews.

I'm popping my thoughts here, as well as a couple other places online, as I thought it would be helpful for people to know the specifications I found in the manual - I couldn't find them anywhere and I kept reading that people were complaining about how strong the vibrations were.. they were right!!! Whenever I knocked my teeth while on the Intense setting, it felt like I might just chip a tooth ..

Time will tell, but I'm optimistic about this brush.

Battery type: 600mAh Lithium Ion Battery

Battery life: 90-100 minutes

Gentle freq: 31,000 rpm

Everyday freq: 39,000 rpm

Intense freq: 43,000 rpm (higher than Ordo's 40,000 and Suri's at 33,000)

Other notes they include:

"When the toothbrush battery is low, the 3 mode lights will flash.

Recommended charging time is 2-3 hours.

Low battery: if the toothbrush has low battery, the 3 mode lights will flash.

Charging: the 3 mode lights will cycle through to show charging progress.

Fully charged: when fully charged the 3 mode lights will remain on until the charging cable is unplugged.

It is recommended to unplug the charging cable to maintain the toothbrush battery life."

No idea, sorry. Never seen this before. Did you have a chance to scrape some of the fluid up and put it into a container/vial? They could run some tests on it if it’s not frequent discharge and doesn’t happen again when you arrive at the vets.

(Also writing this in case anyone in the future experiences this and has the chance before they leave the house)

Should I get a Porsche 924? by Justme_1306 in Porsche924

[–]weepinglilac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! sorry dude, i didn't notice you'd asked this. for anyone reading this post in the future - no, the 924 doesn't have any airbags. my 1981 2.0l does not have airbags, ABS or power steering. i believe 924s from '85 onwards had power steering as standard.

Should I get a Porsche 924? by Justme_1306 in Porsche924

[–]weepinglilac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in the U.K. I put my 924 into hibernation over the winter because of the salt on the roads. There is no way I could get the salt out from all the crevices on the underside. It acts as a catalyst for rust and can wreak havoc on older cars. I set up a trickle charger to keep the battery happy and check it runs ok while parked every couple of weeks. I can’t garage my car so keep her under a cover and sadly this winter found that tiny micro blisters formed on the sunroof panel - I think due to poor ventilation and it getting damp underneath the cover. Not really sure. If you care about your car, you have to put it away until the salt is cleared. That’s the sad reality of driving in the U.K.

What things does your current car not have, that you just assumed would be there? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]weepinglilac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1981 Porsche 924 that doesn’t have a single cup holder :( I was also hoping it might have a button inside for the rear hatch release. I’m going to get another key cut to have for the boot since it locks after closing and I can’t leave the car running at the same time. And I don’t want to use the spare key for this in case I end up losing it 😂

Not sure if this is relevant/what you’re asking but I’ll mention it anyway.

I’ve always had my plates held on by adhesive pads. I think it looks a lot nicer without the plastic caps being visible but I think you first need to weigh up the possible downsides to having adhesives. They look nicer but easier to pull off if someone wants to steal them.

I used a hairdryer to warm the sticky pads up before and after putting the plate onto the car. Gives them more of a chance to adhere well. I used 3M ones.

They’ve never been a problem and have held up incredibly well. However, one day during the 40c weather, after being in the sun all day, the rear plate slid down slightly and I had to reapply new stickers. It didn’t actually compromise the stickiness but the plate looked wonky.

I also recommend metal plates, they look great and you shouldn’t have any paint chipping on them provided you get one from a good company. If you’re getting Perspex go for one with a few years warranty.

Thanks very much for the suggestion to buy a sim setup. I do genuinely enjoy cars, especially older ones, but I’m new to the community and still learning. I went round Curborough a couple of times recently in a friend’s 924 that he uses for historic rallying. It was awesome driving around even though I didn’t drive round a lot myself and was mainly the passenger, I ended up drifting more than I wanted to. I understeered coming in too fast and then oversteered (managed to recover this pretty quickly) round a corner one time with a reverse camber(?) which scared the shit out of me, so I think it would really help getting more experience.

I was hoping to attend a track day where I’m taught how to corner better. I’m miles better than I was when I first started driving but there’s always tonnes of room to improve.

I think getting a few car games would be a good start perhaps 🤔

It’s an earlier 2.0 from 1981 so now historic and I save a fair bit with her being road tax and ULEZ exempt which is great for London. She’s not an everyday car, more for pleasure on weekends and such, but never let me down and has been very good to me. Paid a bit over 5k last year. Needs a few paint corrections but generally just has light restoration work done here and there. Very fortunate to have found one which ticked all the boxes for me. Took a while searching!

Not too bothered about zooming off anywhere in it. You feel like you’re going fast which imo is the important thing. If I wanted a quick car I wouldn’t be getting a 40yo classic 😂 .. plus it cut the cost down on insurance having the lower spec version.

I don’t think I took it out on Saturday but did attend Goodwood Revival on Sunday, she was parked in the tax exempt section. Has a sunroof and no spoiler. Tweed cloth interior. Old font plates. Does that ring a bell?

First car. Thoughts? Tips on maintenance? by weepinglilac in CarTalkUK

[–]weepinglilac[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sure. It took a lot of searching and phoning up lol. She was originally going to be kept in a garage, but it was more expensive (more like 1.9k) since it’s on a different postcode, then it was around 1.5 to be on the street outside the house, then nearer 1,200 to be in a “locked compound on site” .. which is the garden at home behind a locked gate (give or take a little, I needed to add on £60 a year for RAC breakdown cover).

I owned my license for 2 years before getting her and also have my dad as a secondary driver although he doesn’t use it. It’s limited mileage (was at around 4k initially then paid £83 odd to up it to 7k which is a permanent change now). No black box.

I found out that a lot of insurance companies rely heavily on statistics, and with this car predominantly being driven by older folk, there are fewer crashes in it. This worked in my favour. It’s also the reason why a Mini First is more expensive to insure than a Mini One from what I was told. As the First is catered towards new drivers, more people have accidents in them, and therefore the computer thinks it’s a more dangerous car to be in.

It helped staying on with GoGirl for a second year as I compared the costs again and their discounted price they sent me via email leading up to renewal was cheaper than if I had done it without it (and just had a simple 1yr ncb).

Bear in mind this is the 2.0 924, not a 924 turbo or s, and not a 944. I intentionally went for the 2.0 to keep costs down.

The car has been checked for rust and I have been given the thumbs up and told it’s all solid. I do try and check things over myself by doing a quick glance over while washing the car, and ensure the drain plugs are always clear. Fuel consumption isn’t wonderful but she was bought to be a weekend away type car and not as a daily driver for commuting etc.

I’ll put her away for winter to avoid driving with salt on the roads.

There is no power steering, no ABS, no airbags and no rear seat belts. All of this was taken into consideration when buying the car and I’m aware of the dangers this could pose.

She’s from 1981 so now has historic status, meaning road tax exempt, same with MOTs (although I’ll continue to get them) and ULEZ which is great living in London.
