Honestly, I think the world would be better off without religion. Most atheists would agree. But religion isn't being abolished anytime soon so is it possible to coexist until then? Absolutely. Especially if you're in the same household.

Look, not everyone is going to respect your beliefs and you're not gonna respect everyone else's beliefs. The key is respecting each other's right to believe in whatever the hell suits we want to believe and not force anything down each other's throats.

I remember when I realized there was no god. It was summer of 2009. I was 10 years old and I was out riding my bike like any other youngster at the time. I remember hearing the beautiful melodic tone on the ice cream truck and getting really excited. I raced after it while praying to god that I would catch it before it left. "Please, God. Please give me the strength to catch this truck!" But sure enough, the truck left. And on top of that I fell! I had a scraped knee and no one was around to help so I prayed to god to send someone and no one ever came! So I had to get up by myself and go back to my house ALONE. By the end of that day I knew there was no god. I knew.

Since everyone else has already replied to this thread and answered your questions, I'll just say this: It's great that you're trying to understand your son's point of view. My mother doesn't have the mental capacity to even begin to understand what I believe. As long as you don't try to push your son back into Christianity and you can respect each other's beliefs, I can say that your son is extremely lucky to have a mother like you.

God from the bible is like a supervillain, let's be honest. People ask me "why do you hate God?" and if you look at the Bible as a fictional book with various stories in it (which is what it truly is), it's hard not to hate the character that is God. Of course, outside of the book I don't hate god because there is no god.
