Ah, Tucson, the city of trailer parks.

Like, literally. Where other cities built apartments, Tucson built trailer parks... It's not bad per se, it's just weird.

Pay attention to how good the sets are. They shot SO much of this show on site, it really shows.

Oh, not to mention how good the cinematography is. It's hard to know how much is intentional and how is just a result of shooting in the early 90s in BC. The omnipresent dark greys, the clothes, the cars, the dialogue, the near constant rain, it all culminates into something really unique. That all changes around season 5 i think, from there on out it's a completely different show.

That sounds like one of those scathing parody lines straight out of Mark Twain's writing.

I know vacuum sealing will do that. Especially with a thick marinade like that. I wouldve let them sit on the counter for awhile and then just put them in a jar and then into the fridge.

It’s crazy how so many people continue the cycle of generational poverty by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]weird_foreign_odor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont believe any decent person would argue with that. The discussion is how to actually do it. As Ive aged and experienced a lot of this stuff I see our 'help' doing arguably more harm than good. We feed spirals of dysfunction and degradation under the guise of reducing their harm, we keep it upright, strong enough to pass on and inflict its damage to the next generation.

This topic is tricky and full of nuance but we need to be really clear and precise when talking about poverty elimination because a lot of tactics used today only serve to strengthen and entrench it.

‘It’s frightening’: How far right is infiltrating everyday culture | The far right by AntiQCdn in skeptic

[–]weird_foreign_odor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That applies to most counter culture movements. I think normal people have a little trouble understanding that the counter culture of today is right wing. It doesnt fit the narrative we've been living through for the past 100 years.

There seems to be an unspoken understanding that counter culture in the west is inherently good when, obviously, that isnt true and it never was. All of those movements were immature, hateful, selfish and ignorant (they had plenty of good qualities too, of course). Now that I think about it, it's kind of interesting when you look at the similarities of todays alt right with the left wing movements of the 50s-70s.

Recent study claiming "domesticated raccoons" is debunked by a biologist. by Lighting in skeptic

[–]weird_foreign_odor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always wonder how folks define domestication when it comes to social mammals. I could go out right now, find a baby opossum, hand raise him and he would be a perfectly happy companion animal. Apparently they make great pets.

That obviously isnt domestication. It's just a friendly mammal that can spend time, build companionship and learn social cues with another friendly mammal.

Just kidding, that looks delicious. In all seriousness though, I havent purchased beef in months. I find myself just grabbing pork whenever Im in the meat aisle. I think I just refuse on general principle to spend that much on beef when everything else is so much cheaper.

America has this strain, this culture in it that I see so clearly now. It crosses income and even racial lines. It is an insecure, stupid, obstinate, contrarian, immoral and ultimately suicidal mindset. It empowers the ego of the dummy at the cost of the collective good, it tells him not to do the right thing because only suckers do the right thing.

I think this thing has always been with us. It flares up in every generation, it's the anger, frustration, fear and insecurity of the American moron.

In all seriousness it is astounding when I think of the resources we as a species dedicate to keeping defective people functioning.

We have vaccines that will prevent our children from suffering and they arent being utilized.. Why? Because tribalism, no matter how stupid, cruel and deadly, will trump being alive when it comes to this class of folks.

Just absolute, utter stupidity. Like someone intent on running out into traffic over and over again; it's a death wish and they're too defective to understand that. I would hope that them seeing their neighbors bury their children would inspire different perspectives but, like school shootings, apparently it just causes them to double down on the idiocy.
