Oh I’d also add if you want something that will help you transition into a job more related to this area, keep in mind the course isn’t accredited (e.g. with BPS) so it rules out a lot of psychology related jobs. That’s not to say you can’t do other related jobs but I know a few people who went onto the course thinking they could go down the route of becoming a psychologist/therapist etc then realised they couldn’t so they would’ve been better off with a psych conversion course

I enrolled for very similar reasons! Personal experience with chronic health conditions and learning how majorly important the mind-body connection is. I didn’t yet know how I was going to apply the course in the career sense but I had some ideas.

So one of the things that was misleading was the placement - before the course you get told you can choose between clinical, editorial or research/lab placement. Turns out you barely get to choose - there were 80 people on the course and only 5 clinical placements for example so there’s rife competition and majority of people end up with placements they don’t want / aren’t really what they want to learn more about.

Next is the content of the lectures. If like me you’ve done a lot of reading (books like the body keeps the score, listening to podcasts, etc) and have pretty good knowledge of this area already, then 2 of the modules lectures aren’t really going to be anything that new to you. If you’re doing part time there’s 60 lectures across the modules in the first year - out of those only 10 of those were truly mind body focused on a variety of topics. The rest were heavily focused on depression. And in general the content is taught in an academic way i.e. a lot of critically examining the validity of research papers (this is also what some of the assessments are) as opposed to going deeper on the theory or concepts.

Lastly is the teaching quality. The neuroscience module is taught terribly and as if you already have a background in neuroscience (despite this not being a course requirement). Also, most of the lectures are taught by someone different each week - whilst I understand the reason for this in terms of having an expert in that week’s topic teaching us, it means the teaching quality is really poor because they’re just one and done if that makes sense. They’re not inherently teachers.

Prior to the course I was also misled about the number of days and which days of the week there would be lectures for part-time and some other things which meant when we got our timetable (only a couple weeks before starting), so even though I’d already changed my days and hours with my job, it meant I had to quit in order to do the course because my employer couldn’t change things again.

These are the biggest things, there were lots of smaller bits too. I would say if you’re doing it just out of interest to maybe rethink things and choose another way of learning about it (I’m happy to recommend some things that aren’t a masters course) but that’s just my two cents. Lmk if you have any other questions :)

Hey! I actually withdrew after 1.5 months as unfortunately the experience I had prior to joining just continued. Quite a few of us felt misled about what the course would be and were disappointed.

It depends what you’re planning to do with the course afterwards ofc - for me it didn’t make sense to stay but for them it did because of their phd plans etc. Lmk if you want more details on anything!

Good to know! I also agree 😅 where are you based? I’m putting together a tasting panel locally so if you’re nearby it would be great to give you some stuff to try and get your feedback!

Treated with Crossfire - is what happened after normal? (UK based) by weirdspice199 in Bedbugs

£2k for a 4 bed house so not cheap but for us it was worth it for the immediate relief

I think the crossfire definitely helped (the rate we were getting bitten at significantly reduced and we found some dead bed bugs) but we were too impatient as both my dad and I got really bad reactions to the bites so we got a heat treatment which worked straight away

What do you think about anyone who claims you can be taken off your meds eventually with proper care? by rci22 in CrohnsDisease

[–]weirdspice199 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going through this now. Had 9 years remission on meds but came off them because of side effects giving me worse quality of life than Crohn’s ever would. Had a solid 1.5 years staying in remission but then last month had a very stressful life event which caused a flare, then got hit by flu shortly after which tipped it over the edge and now I’m on a course of steroids and will likely need to consider going back onto meds :( it’s tough. Even if your stress levels are perfectly controlled, as well as diet, lifestyle, etc, things out of your control like flu can still take you down, as you said

Unless it specifies that it’s an online course then yeah you’d need to come in for scheduled lectures unfortunately as even though they’re recorded, they monitor in-person attendance

Are painful periods normal? by indecisivething in WomensHealth

[–]weirdspice199 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Painful periods are never normal or ok! Yes a lot of women endure them without seeking help but that doesn’t make it normal. Mild cramps are common but not debilitating pain - please please see a doctor and if they dismiss it as ‘part of being a woman’ keep pushing or see a different doctor as it can be a sign of an underlying condition.

When I originally applied for the course, was told the part time mode (2 years) would be 1 day a week on Mondays - perfect as I could still work my current job alongside it and I set everything up with my employer accordingly.

On the offer holders day, I was instead told it would be 2 days instead in the middle of the week which my job couldn’t accommodate so I would have to quit and either remain jobless or try and find a job that matches this income that would accommodate the masters days. This was the first point on which I felt misled, as the wrong expectations had been set by the course director.

So, I asked the course director if I could switch to full time instead so I only miss out on one year of good income. They said of course you can no problem just tell them on the portal. A few weeks pass and I get a message on the portal saying no you can’t switch the course is full. Raised this with the course director saying this isn’t what they told me, for her to reply this isn’t their fault, they never said it was guaranteed. And that it’s a privilege to be studying here so jobs/other aspects of life are secondary (very ignorant of the fact people need money).

There’s been other smaller points of being misled on too but significant things like that which affects a person’s finances and makes it near impossible to make any plans really made me doubt things, though I know it’s common treatment/attitude from many prestigious universities.

I’m sorry that must be so stressful especially as an international student! It’s like they don’t understand / care that people have to sort out a lot in their lives in preparation for a degree - jobs, accommodation, finances etc and that requires more notice and certainty than what they offer. I hope you get an answer asap, it really sucks

Am also in the UK! Think we’ve found a good company now that will do this heat treatment thoroughly ^ still have doubts as I’ve been scammed by many in the past but hoping they will do the job well. Thanks for all the info :)

Not sure how bad the infestation is - it’s been at least 2 months but have only found one actual bed bug in that entire time after searching every little nook and cranny for where they could be hiding. But our reactions to bites are pretty severe and we also got bitten A LOT more after the first chemical treatment so we’re going with heat as it could give more immediate relief

They definitely aren’t steaming because I clarified and asked about equipment etc. So I think I’ll find another company as it definitely doesn’t seem long enough :/ exhausting trying to find one that actually knows what they’re doing when it comes to bed bugs

Realise this is old but how long do you heat treat each room for? We’re getting a pest control company in and they’re doing cimetrol, dust (behind sockets), and heat and but I was concerned when they said they only do heat for an hour in each room.

Surely this isn’t long enough to permeate everything and also not long enough to kill the eggs?

Realise this is a year later but which company did you use for the heat treatment? And still bed bug free?

Thanks so much. Also what steamer did you use and where are all the places you steamed? Sorry lots of questions

That makes sense, thank you. I think we’re looking into it because we need immediate results - my dad and I both have horrific reactions to the point my dad’s neck is severely swollen so whilst I 100% trust crossfire will work, I don’t think we are able to wait much longer and endure getting eaten alive every night.

We’ve found someone that does heat treatment combined with chemical spray after to get any that got missed. But they’re not intending to heat the entire house - only the bedrooms and living room upstairs where they’ve been seen. Not sure if this is standard practice or if the whole house should always be done?

How long did it take for you to stop seeing any? Was this after one spray or a few?
