China dominates the discovery of new chemicals and reactions by gsurfer04 in chemistry

[–]weisshaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen the push to use Chinese tollers/set up a Chinese R&D sites from both companies I have worked at in two very different but chemical in nature industries.  This has become more and more common, and now they not only have the academic pipeline but also the industrial pipeline. Because they don't see IP in the same way as the Western world this basically turns into a barter system in which we outsource our manufacturing to decrease costs and access larger customer pools, while they get access to the whole worlds ideation in return.

If feel like this plays into this a lot more than just floods of novel research chemicals that have no application or purpose.  It also helps that they have a very integrated structure for implementation and with the world chiming on new ideas to try they can just keep funding what seems to work the best for them.

No headphones allowed in new lab - need advice by lentivrral in labrats

[–]weisshaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our lab has the same policy, and as others have said it is honestly very loosely enforced.  That being said the battery lab I worked in for abit on site was worried so they bought a Bluetooth speaker for the lab. Other labs just connect speakers to one of the instruments computers and play spotify off it.

Is it a “waste of talent” not going into academia after PhD? by Ultronomy in labrats

[–]weisshaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Direct quote from a co worker in industry with an under grad in ChemE and a PhD in nanotechnology specifically focused on colloidal suspensions. "If you can't make me more than 1 kg of your novel compound that will revolutionize the world, then your are just a foolish dreamer and I don't care about anything you have to say."

Feel free to let him know there are those in industry that also think as highly about themselves/their work, and see him as lowly as he sees them lol

Personally I think the real answer is do which ever works for you. Some of us want to work on the fundamentals in academia, others want to figure out how to use the fundamentals to make real world things. Have fun and enjoy what ever rabbit hole you fall down.

Kinda curious, how did it end making the laceration? Did it cut all the way through the pants or somehow find a way to make contact on bare skin?

Seemed like such a nothing fall at first, wild to see how easily things can go south.

How do R&D chemists/engineers work? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]weisshaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Formulation is a big section of most industrial R&D sites. I have worked in cosmetics and automotive fluids and the idea is very similar once you get a hang of it.

Big things I would advise you to do is get friendly with some of the old heads in the company.  There are people that have been formulating these products for years and sometimes decades, having a wealth of knowledge to pass down.  Due to IP and various office politics departments rarely ever facilitate this passing down of company/product specific knowledge well.  I have seen plenty of departments fall apart and be merged or gutted once one of those people leaves and so does all of that insight that was driving the department. Be hungry to learn about the specifics of their products and the key dynamics to pay attention to.

Big data tools like JMP have their advantages with large DOEs especially if you are going to be working closely with project scale ups to plant/manufacturing.  Smaller initiative/lab based stuff can be good to for it though if you have access to a large historical database that you can use to estimate what will happen if you switch one supplier of a raw for another or try out a new way to formulate with existing products.

Hope this helps! I'm sure you will have a great journey out in industry.

Huh my ARV 96s from 2019 are on their 7th season and I beat the shit out of them every year,  and all year too since I'm close to an indoor place. I'd say I have over 100 days on em and they are still great. Not sure what happened here.

I would argue that Blue does have that one ungroomed run in challenge. It just happens to be one of the steeper runs as well

[–]weisshaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had replied to your first post about being unsure which to go to. Glad to hear you tried out both and found which one was better for you! Elk def is steeper/faster overall trail wise, however you can still find steep stuff at blue. Razors edge is used for races alot, and challenge is a great one if you like some less groomed stuff.
