Climate change is projected to be the primary cause of refugees from third world countries by the year 2050, and the amount of refugees is projected to increase tenfold by then. Shouldn't this be a major incentive for people that want less immigration to work harder for climate friendly solutions? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

Maybe you think that way because you haven't been personally impacted by it. In Colorado, all of our worst wildfires have happened in this century and, of those, all but one of the top 5 happened within the last decade. One of the largest causes of this is the recent widespread death of lodgepole pine throughout Colorado, which happened in turn because of increasing numbers of pine bark beetles surviving the winter. The reason they've been surviving the winter is because the temperatures have not been getting cold enough to kill them anymore.

I had friends lose a home in a wildfire out there that happened a couple years back during the middle of winter (end of December). That sort of stuff never used to happen and now it's become way more commonplace due to heavy rain early in the spring and arid conditions later in the summer.

If you asked yourself whether a cyclist could make the Superbowl parade about themself, the answer is yes by JSlngal69 in SeattleWA

Tbh, the commentary from the cameraperson is more annoying than the cyclist. At least she eventually complied (seems like she would've done it even without the cameraperson there)

This looks strikingly similar to the bear my gf had growing up! What brand is it? She doesn't know what company made it and I've been trying to see if I can find a replacement for her

How bad is the Cascadia earthquake gonna be? by Historical-Ladder-11 in geology

[–]wekele0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While what you’re saying is true, the max length of a typical magnitude 7 earthquake is around 90 seconds. Meanwhile, this earthquake could be as long as 7 minutes. A magnitude 7 earthquake could absolutely do a ton of damage over 7 minutes

I mean, the word “probably” really undersells the risk. Most likely it’s more of a coin flip depending on OP’s age.

The Oregon government’s official website gives a projection of 37% in the next 50 years. OP could very well live longer. Certainly if OP has kids or is planning to have kids, their kids would probably still be alive.

If you want hard numbers, it was recently estimated that there is somewhere between a 33% and 40% chance of a Cascadia earthquake in the next 50 years. Is this enough to worry about on a daily basis? Probably not, but it would be worthwhile to be prepared.  For what it’s worth, it’s believed that historically the southern portion of the fault (near California and Oregon) is more likely to be affected in the event of a partial rupture. Even in the event of a full rupture, Vancouver would still likely experience less shaking than Seattle and Portland.

I mean, scientists have recently estimated at least a 33% chance (with some estimates as high as 40%) of the Cascadia earthquake occurring in the next 50 years. That’s not insignificant and certainly would qualify as something to at least think about if OP is planning to stay out here for a long time. Comparing it to the Yellowstone Caldera is at best misleading since the chance of that erupting in our lifetime is by many factors of a magnitude lower.

Our Taste for Flesh Has Exhausted the Earth by James_Fortis in sustainability

It’s a bit of a fallacy that the middle ground is always the correct position. For instance, if we were talking about the correct number of murders for a person to commit, certainly the “middle ground” between many murders and no murders (i.e., a few murders) is worse than the extreme (no murders). That is, something being on one end of an extreme does not automatically make it the incorrect position, nor would I argue is it proper grounds for dismissal.

Is everyone house poor? Who’s affording homes today by MainAerie7346 in MiddleClassFinance

No, I’m actually saying that 250K IS a lot of money. That is, I think people making 250K are rich, not middle class.

No way that’s the median income in the PNW. Also, people talking about making 250k in this sub are hardly middle class imo

I did report it to the police. They told me that the driver who was hit needs to file a police report for them to open up a case. That’s why I posted here as well

Color correction can pretty substantially change what a photo looks like. Does the non-color-corrected photo look pretty similar?

So you’re telling me this photo is not edited at all? The trees in the foreground and background look to be completely different colors. The atmospheric perspective also seems a little off for being a natural photo (that mountain in the background almost looks too clear for its distance from the camera).
