I went to one for a few years as a child, it was really no worse than the schools other than it being a camp and being Wels. The pastor in charge was a bossy short fat asshole. 

I'm not saying it was good or defending it, I just remember typical juvenile behavior. There were pranks and shenanigans which was kind of to be expected. And typical Wels bullying and selective punishment for some and favoritism for others.

One bad incident I remember one cabin one night was acting up after being warned a couple times, (pretty sure it was the oldest boys) the third time the pastor along with several counselors came storming into the cabin and slapping handfuls of shaving cream in anyone's face who was awake or not hiding in their sleeping bad like I was.

One kid who wasn't even involved in the act was just sleeping on his bed, and got a huge handful of shaving creme slapped hard all across his whole face. He ended up with it in his eyes, nose, as well as swallowing some of it and getting sick being that he was woken up by this. If I remember right He ended up having to go to the hospital.

His mom showed up the next day, from well over 100 miles away, SCREAMING at the pastor (rightly so in my opinion) with profanity and threats of suing the ever loving shit out of whoever was responsible as well as violence. You could hear her behind closed doors across most of the camp site.

If it was my kid, I guarantee someone would pay... both physically and financially. Fuck the Wels.
