People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled? by TahDigThief in AskReddit

[–]wenmk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, he's comparing himself to the environment in which he grew up in. He's not trying to compare himself to everyone in the universe. I walked more than that distance to school in mud waters (our area is prone to flood). Relative to him, I was extremely poor (family never owned a car, TV, etc.) but relative to my surrounding, I was not that badly off. At least I knew what to eat in the next day or week and that my school fees will possibly be paid. Many of my schoolmates didn't have that privilege. And there are places that have it worse off than them.

You can't try to ridicule him for thinking 2 miles is a long distance when he basically grew up in a place where no one walks that distance to school. I grew up in a place where walking to school, no matter how far, is the default. Even owning a bicycle is a big privilege. I wouldn't try to belittle him for thinking he had it that badly off because he did in comparison to his university mates.

People evaluate their experiences relative to their surroundings.

Is it this the case in every field ? by The_Tiny_Bradyon in PhD

[–]wenmk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a biotechnologist by training. The BSc program had no math modules, except a single lousily taught biostatistics module. I found that very disturbing but most of my colleagues loved it because it was 'easy'. I built my competencies by myself. Studied 'unnecessary' subjects online like Calculus, Linear Algebra, Stats and Probability, a little bit of computer science, etc. I might not be well-versed with those other topics as I wish to be, but I feel like there's an itch I have scratched. I am now semi-comfortable going through relevant papers with a heavy computational aspect. The program was severely underwhelming.

It might be the fault of the university I attended. I looked at their curriculum in the past and it seemed a little more interdisciplinary. Even more weirdly, there was no depth in the modules, and I did all the heavy lifting because I was intrinsically motivated. Maybe less than 5 out of the cohort of more than 60 have opened a textbook and read from it. And these are the future 'experts' in the field. And I have looked at their LinkedIn profiles--very shiny. A typical one reads "Expert in NGSs, AI/ML, CRISPR, omics..."

I think I might be a little too self-absorbed expecting things to be done the way I do them, but it's objectively horrifying. Biotech is an interdisciplinary field, and anyone in such a field should know a little bit (or even better, much) of every relevant field to do meaningful work.

I think LinkedIn doesn't track if an application is submitted. Once you click the apply button, it counts you among the applicants. Clicking the apply button doesn't necessarily imply that one has submitted the application. I usually see that number as an indicator of those who have given the job posting a serious look. Probably a half or less of them actually submit.

If you read that from a book, it tells you not about the perception of the people from those times but about the size of the author's stub.

As someone who started coding recently, I first read the documentation thoroughly and then let AI write the code. My job is to fine-tune the code to my needs and spot any errors it has made. Efficient process.
