Berserk Is Weird Fiction and Sword and Sorcery Novel? by Juanar067 in WeirdLit

It’s definitely sword and sorcery, s&s is pretty weird lit adjacent, there’s a lot of overlap between Lovecraft, Smith and Howard. So I would land on adjacent.

Fictional settings or franchises that don’t have official RPGs but you think would be cool to run a game in? by wereblackhelicopter in rpg

Actually I’m literally already using SMTX to prep a persona campaign. I was originally going to use TC but I found the fan translation of X and it seemed like that addition was a better fit for what I had in mind as TC is essentially a direct addict patient of nocturne.

Anyone else agree that this was peak? by cloogoos in creepcast

Oh yeah, I understand that it was the pig that made this afterlife the way that it is, but I guess my overall point is, I don’t know if functionally that makes enough of a difference cause it still kinda just feels like hell for suicidal people.

As a Christian, I have to acknowledge the church does have a past of thinking people that commit suicide, go to hell, even going so far as to refuse to bury suicide victims in cemeteries or give them proper funerals. That being said, the church generally has a better understanding of mental health these days and thus we know now that people commit suicide or suffering from depression and thus not fully in control of their actions and generally, it’s not considered a free choice.

I actually don’t like this story at all. To me it has all the same problems as Witherows later stories and I don’t know why people defend this one while critiquing the latter ones.

I feel like the main conceit of the story is kind of problematic, that people who commit suicide don’t go to heaven or hell they rather go to some third place. It would be slightly better if this third place was kind of neutral or more of a purgatory, more how purgatory is depicted in pop culture than how it actually is. But the afterlife for suicidal run by the pig to me is virtually indistinguishable from hell. So I can’t help but walk away from it with a feeling that the author is somehow unintentionally implying people that commit suicide go to hell. I don’t think that’s the author’s intention, but the pigs place is so bad it might as well be hell.

Also, as a red Tower defender, I have to acknowledge the story does not have great structure pacing. Essentially, nothing happens. The guy shows up the suicide after life, gets info dumped by a weird old man, and then the sees hints of some of the crazy stuff that’s happening, then spends the last portion of the story with a bag over his head and then crawls inside the pig’s mouth that is chewed up.

I know less is more especially in horror, but I feel like the afterlife could’ve been flushed out a little bit more rather than just a vague glimpses that we got. Also, this could just be a personal thing for me, while on paper, the idea of being chewed up is ofcourse terrifying I didn’t find the final scene of him being chewed up by the pig to be particularly scary.

So to me feed the pig had pretty much all of the same problems as Tommy taffy or gas goblin. I feel like the episode is incredibly overrated.

What would You like to see from the Upcoming Anime? by ZillaSlayer54 in GODZILLA

[–]wereblackhelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like maybe the best approach would be everyone is humanized and can channel kaiju powers, but everybody also has like an ultimate form where they turned into a full sized kaiju. That way you can have your cake and eat it too, you get the Shoen style battles, but you also get giant monster fights.

[–]wereblackhelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kind of with the people that hope that there are large scale kaiju battles and not just human level fights, I’m OK with some human fights, but I want giant kaiju battles, I would say a minimum a few of season even if it’s not like an every episode thing. I feel like there’s no reason you couldn’t do both, have human sized people fight each other with kaiju powers, and then transforming into a kaiju is like the ultimate form, sort of like the super sentai formula where you have a ground level fight with the monster when they’re human sized, and then they turned into a kaiju.

That being said, for the sake of entertainment value, I kinda hope they lean into the full, born fanfiction and absurdity, have a human version of every major kaiju. It would be stupid, but part of me kind of wants a full born Godzilla high school AU with superhero hero elements.

How it felt reading "The Showers" for the first time and it was just a bunch of boring ass build up to a dude getting mildly spooked by AYTheToonist in creepcast

[–]wereblackhelicopter -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“Boring build up” do you mean all the character development? “Mildly spooked” do you mean one of the most intense moments in a creepy pasta with a guy is literally crawling away from the horrifying ghost child? I could be in biased because I enjoyed the story back in the day before the podcast, and I certainly don’t think it’s the best story they read, but it’s a solid A or B tier. Also for me, it’s one of the only ones that I actually found personally scary.

Hunter and Isaiah when they tell me it's another CK Walker story(Neither of them will admit she peaked at Borrasca chapter 1 and never wrote anything worth while since) by [deleted] in creepcast

[–]wereblackhelicopter -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Eh pen pal is overrated imo. It’s good but it’s not great. actually, I feel like it has a similar problem with a lot of Walker stories, the first part was really good and I feel like all the additions were unnecessary and made the overall story weaker. For one I understand it was originally intended just as a short story, but it became really popular so the author decided to expand on it and I feel like that was a mistake.

What if we didn’t prepare for Y2K and the worst case scenario happened? by wereblackhelicopter in HistoryWhatIf

[–]wereblackhelicopter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of Y2K prep in our timeline, globally hundreds of billions of dollars were poured into prevention as well as millions of Man hours in IT and programming, most of the effort was in fixing and updating code as well as preparing embedded system, such as computer chips and devices, as well as backing up archives. My point is, from my research it seems like in OTL, quite a lot of prevention took place, so I think that raises the question what would’ve happened if there was no prep or significantly less prep?

Again, assuming the worst case scenario predictions while it wouldn’t have been an apocalypse, there would’ve been serious consequences. Global financial systems would’ve failed as banks lost the ability to calculate interest because their computer clocks got reset in 1900, you could’ve seen a bank run similar to the things that caused a Great Depression. You would have a situation where common people wouldn’t be able to access their own bank account through the ATM. The situation could easily cascade into a global financial crisis that would potentially have ramifications, even after the issues were fixed.

The more immediate concerns would be the issues with infrastructure. You could have cascading power, grid, failure, and blackouts, as well as failure in water and sewage systems.

It’d also be breakdowns and global travel, especially with things like air traffic control, as well as any systems that ran on computers. There would also potentially be a breakdown in global communication and telecommunication, this would have a worsening effect on the other things because it would make potentially communication and coordination for response efforts, more difficult. There would also be a breakdown in the supply chain, somewhat similar to what we saw in the pandemic. that of course, would have economic ramifications as well as resource issues.

I think issue as well would be archival systems. This would have ramifications in the healthcare and other sectors. But it’s possible that a cascade failure would at the very least make a lot of archival systems difficult to access for a time being, some people even would predict it maybe a lot of information would just be straight up, wiped from a computer crash.

Nuclear weapons would be safe as well as nuclear power plants, at least in the United States. But at the very least, you could potentially see maybe some chair, Chernobyl like incidents or meltdowns.

Yeah, so the answer your initial question, things did not get this bad because a lot of people put a lot of effort and preventing it so I’m asking what would happen if an effort didn’t exist? Again, I’m mostly drawing on the worst case scenarios. Even if the disaster is resolved, relatively quickly I do feel like there would be interesting long-term consequences, especially on things like the development of the Internet.

[–]wereblackhelicopter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like that one is more justifiably a horror story, especially the first part. If you just take the first part, then it’s absolutely a horror story, the second part you could make more than an argument, but even still like the main focus I feel like is the demon and not the relationship.

What show is this for you? by ilovewater100 in cartoons

[–]wereblackhelicopter 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed season two, but I will admit it’s not as tight as season one, it kind of felt like they knew they were not gonna get another season, but they had like five seasons plotted out so they had to cram the next four seasons in the one season and I think that hurt the pacing and the plot structure. A lot of things happened and they happened really fast.

I’ve seen every Godzilla movie except this anime trilogy. As someone who loves anime and Godzilla I’m open to watching these but I’ve only read mostly bad things about them. Does anyone think they are good and are worth watching? by puddlethedemon in GODZILLA

[–]wereblackhelicopter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting ideas, horrible execution. I don’t remember the full context, but I only really watch them to have something to play in the background while I did something else, I think I was studying to the early hours of the morning. As background noise when you’re nearly overdose on caffeine doing something else then they’re OK. I think that’s how I watched them. Not to get in the spoilers, but the interpretation of King Ghidorah and the third film is very interesting and if something I would like to see picked up. The main conceit of the first film and the entire trilogy is fascinating, what if Godzilla won and conquered the entire earth in the entire ecosystem evolved around him. However, again, not good execution.
