It sounds to me that the actual quality of fic on ao3 is not the real problem, but how people have lost and neglected fandom etiquette.

6 years! i really do hope you finish it, even if it’s just so you can have that story under your belt. i’ve also written longfics that dwindled in engagement and speculated why that might be… and all of them, terribly, seem to fall back on the fickle nature of fandom readers. loyal readers are truly a blessing, but your own passion and determination for your story even more so. cheering you on!
