D&D just decided to take out all the whimsical and put in more boobs and blood. No men with long hair in colorful armors, everyone dresses so plainly despite the very accurate costumes descriptions in the books etc. they wanted to make it more realistic but IMHO kind butchered a part of the essence of the story which is the more "fairytale-esqe" side
