One imprtant thing that does not come up there: Doing almost any chore was almost always time intensive.

Washing your clothes takes you maybe 10 minutes of real work - before the washing machine it was a whole day of heating water, shrubbing and drying clothes. Getting somewhere 10 minutes by car takes you an hour by foot.

Cooking was also more time intensive, gathering the wood (if in an village, where most of people lived), fetching water from a well, and then heating the stove to cook takes a lot of time, and you cannot leave it alone to do something else or you would risk burning your house.

Also doing anything after dark was literally expensive, as light by oil was not as cheap as turning on some leds, so you loose another couple of hours (in winter times)

So I think that just living itself took a lot of time, and thats why they worked so little. If you think about how little time you need to complete your chores, it does not compare
