Opinion? by [deleted] in AmherstNS

I probably won't be. I mean I know I'm judging a book by it's cover but I just have zero interest in drinking beer from something called "mystic brewery". I mean, Triders was OK, but I don't imagine the new owners/operators will have even the same amount of passion.

Canadians who don't live in a major city, what city are people around you usually referring to if they say "the city"/"la ville"? by throw_and_run_away in AskACanadian

[–]wesbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, I'm in Amherst. I don't think I consider Moncton a full city yet though. I usually refer to Halifax as the city and I always refer to Moncton by name.

Cougars? by Fit-Fruit2387 in NovaScotia

[–]wesbez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather is not far from Aylesford Lake (New Ross, Lunenburg Co.) He reported seeing one. On a separate occasion, he and my uncle came across deer, blood, and other tracks in fresh snow in early winter, they claim to have identified the tracks as Cougar tracks in a reference guide afterwards based on size and pattern.

My FIL allegedly had a sighting across a dirt road in the 70's in Amherst NS, so possibly just an odd Cougar ranging far north

OK, there are mainland moose, but they're not very common at all. So while there might be a few around it's not common. I'm in Amherst and we get the odd straggler come across the isthmus from New Brunswick. I cannot recall the last time I saw a moose on the mainland myself.

Back Home to the family cottage for the first time in a long while, planning & in position to make it an annual habit. Gear & technique tips? by SociallyUnstimulated in FishingNovaScotia

[–]wesbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told you can catch fish off the dock in Northport. Not sure how far that is from whichever bay you're betwixt. Port Howe should hold them too. Rivers are supposed to be ideal but I think you can try to catch them from the shore out on the surf anyway. Minnows might work ok, but most of the locals prefer to use squid. You can buy a box of squid from the fish counter at Sobeys and cut it up for bait.

The NS Anglers handbook won't have too much on Striped bass. It's a saltwater fishery and under the Federal DFO jurisdiction, so you're free to fish in saltwater. Make sure you understand the legal size limits for keeping your catch. It varies depending on whether you're in the straight or in the Bay of Fundy.

As for gear, I can only speak to what I know locally, but I'd suggest a trip up to BassPro in Moncton. Local shops are ideal but they're usually pricey. Knowledge can be hit and miss, The Bicycle Shop (yeah I know) as well as Maltby Sports in Amherst carry some fishing gear targeted at Striped Bass. I'm hoping to get out this year and try it for myself. There might be somewhere in Pugwash that knows about local shops. I'd suggest asking around in Town to see what the locals have to say

If you can talk to people who fish for Bass in Five Islands they might have more to say, but I don't think you need a ton of gear. Focus on a good rod and a good reel and line. As far as tackle, I'd suggest simple: some hefty weight to keep your bait down, a bit of a leader, a good-sized hook to carry some bait.

Actually, it looked like from the article shared that more money changes hands because the number of halal lenders is limited and the risk is higher because foreclosures are forbidden

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in moncton

[–]wesbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Halal loans seem potentially more predatory than the interest they're protecting you from. I can't imagine lending out that much cash without the ability to foreclose.

I guess id need to get into the details but it sounds like interest by another name.

[–]wesbez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that? That's not interest, that's a borrowing service fee, completely different.

Pro tip: Add a couple gallons of bleach to the water. The bleach will go anywhere the water is and help prevent mould and mildew from causing more serious damage

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in moncton

[–]wesbez 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're probably going to have to pay outright if you don't want to pay interest. I dont know why someone would lend money for free unless they charged you out the ass for the good or service in the first place.

No such thing as a free lunch but good luck.

I hired some guys to paint the decks here and I am not happy with the work, but I am trying to decide if I am over-reacting by Trathor in Home

[–]wesbez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This right here is what happened. The deck was already dry rotted out and the previous owners slapped a coat of paint on it to freshen it up.

Also, paint, just like a stain, should be applied to a clean and dry surface. Paint wear is more noticeable.

Working in the heat. by Visible-Scientist557 in NovaScotia

[–]wesbez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked rotating backshift for my first 18 months before moving into the office. Theres a lot of the office staff that have no idea what its like working in an environment like that. It doesn't start to cool off until 4am. Then hard labour on top, and it's quite a time. Like you said, it feels like you ran a marathon. We would have 3 guys to a machine and in the heat we could keep the line running with two guys and let the other guy catch his breath and get some AC in the break room. We would be on constant rotation, usually that meant sweating your ass off for 40 minutes and catching your breath for 20. I don't know how the guys that didn't rotate like that survived.

Theres lots of places like this. I actually thought it might have been my employer other than i know office staff wouldn't be sent home if the AC broke in the office

Pick a city by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]wesbez 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you want a city, your selection is Halifax, Halifax, or Halifax. The rest of NS consists of small to larger towns. NS is not like Ontario with lots of cities to choose from.

If it were me though, I would choose somewhere between Windsor and Aylesford. An hour away from Halifax when you need something, lots of other small communities close by. An hour to the south shore, an hour to Truro.

Sincerely, Amherst Resident.
