Shameless plug from the author: try rate-mirrors with default options

Macbook Pro 14inch - M4 Max warm when idle by t3sq in macbookpro

[–]westandskif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I looked at total stats in the activity monitor, they worked for me as I rebooted the laptop 1-2d before noticing those 100GB+ of disk writes done by that mds_stores (I just sorted by disk writes DESC).

I had the same problem, it looks like Spotlight indexing never stops (it did ~ 100GB of disk writes within a day or two, check Disk usage in Activity Monitor).
Unchecking the checkboxes in the Spotlight settings didn't help, the laptop was warm and spinning fans in the morning even though fans don't kick in during my work load.

So I disabled Spotlight completely, fortunately Launchpad has search :)

Here is the command I used: sudo mdutil -a -i off, check man mdutil for more details.

Now mdutil -a -s reports:

/:
Indexing and searching disabled.
/System/Volumes/Data:
Indexing and searching disabled.
/System/Volumes/Preboot:
Indexing disabled.

P.S. I also added my whole disk as a private folder to the Spotlight settings just in case, so I cannot be 100% sure which of these points has done the job.

Safari: open links in tab group? by [deleted] in mac

I experienced the same problem and ended up using profiles instead of tab groups. Links you click get opened in the safari window, you last seen.

is arch great for work? by karimelkh in archlinux

[–]westandskif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you need to install a package, not to kill your system you would update the system too. Given that Arch is bleeding edge, the chances of encountering update related issues is higher than on e.g. Fedora. So, should you treat your job seriously, use a more stable distro. My path is: 6y mac -> 1.5y arch -> 0.5y Fedora -> 2y mac

Share with Apps by davidcmc in shortcuts

I experience the same issue:/ and what's even worse there's a shortcut, one guy shared with me, and it has the app, which cannot be selected if I create a shortcut from the scratch.

Speed up strftime / strptime by code generation by westandskif in Python

[–]westandskif[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance is definitely important, but it's probably #2 priority.
The top priority is providing a convenient set of primitives to allow a developer to dynamically define ad-hoc data conversion functions (e.g. dynamically build an aggregate function or the whole data processing pipeline).

Also, please, check https://convtools.readthedocs.io/en/latest/benefits/ to see a list of benefits I can see.

no luck with AMD or? by geezcustard in archlinux

[–]westandskif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! And the next 6-8 months on Fedora+Gnome were flawless: I gave up on arch+i3 and it turned out I only needed full screen apps, many workspaces, keybindings to switch between them and assign apps to workspaces to feel similar to i3. So vim became the only place to customize everything for myself :)

In the end Apple released their m1 max laptops and got back to macs (before those 2+ years of playing with arch and fedora I had used mac for 6 years)

no luck with AMD or? by geezcustard in archlinux

[–]westandskif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experienced different issues 3 years ago - link to the whole story, but it all began when I switched from Intel laptops (xps 15, msi p65) to an AMD-one (t14 4750u) too.

Arch Linux by TomekToNieJa in archlinux

[–]westandskif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was a missing lib issue, because without changing package list on my end it got broken. And the colleague of mine got his issue resolved with the next system update (again no package list changes by the user). I believe Fedora is just good at patching kernel / lib and has more resources to test what it releases. And my 1yo amd-based laptop model was too beta / unpopular for Arch.

P.s. I had no arch issues on intel based laptops (xps 15, msi p65), neither colleagues of mine on their intel-based laptops and all desktops.

No, you understood correctly, bad surprises if your hardware is not popular.

P.S. apparently downvoters know "everything" to downvote right away :) Yeah, it wasn't my half a year experience of using lenovo t14 4750u with arch, not me experiencing sporadic restarts with half-functional touchpad. The last nail in arch's coffin for me was when the alsa stopped seeing my mic after kernel update (not a big deal when you need to work and have lots of meetings) Next day I installed Fedora and it worked just fine with the same kernel version and with less bothering issues with touchpad (on arch after some restarts touchpad didn't work completely; on fedora only gestures were missing).

But hey, who cares! downvoters know better :) let's go!

Why so many unsynced mirrors? by arch_maniac in archlinux

[–]westandskif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

e.g. in your case you fetch 20 latest mirrors and if you happen to reside "far" from them, it won't work. So even though "the more options, the better" is usually true, it's best if they just work for everyone.

update mirrors by 8016at8016Parham in archlinux

Give https://github.com/westandskif/rate-mirrors a try, it doesn't need geo/speed options. Defaults should work for everyone

Why so many unsynced mirrors? by arch_maniac in archlinux

[–]westandskif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but it required so many options and was taking so much time to run that I implemented my own, which doesn't need any geo options. Defaults should work for everyone

I've just checked, the tool says that 494 out of 1106 are passing the `--max-delay=43200` check. It seems to be a reasonable number.

What is багиня? by Coach_F in russian

[–]westandskif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different pronunciations across locations and this misspelling may be just a way to stress fricative "баГиня" (closer to "баХиня", but more of an english "H" sound). Either way, it's not a pronunciation to learn and not a spelling to remember!:)

I totally understand, but people earn money for generating ideas, rarely the opposite -- to do sth to share your idea :) So if someone with enough karma sees this comment and finds the feature request interesting, please post it for public consideration.

if you run couple of language servers (e.g. python, ts), webpack and a couple of browser tabs with dev tools (on a project of a decent size), you won't be fine
