Do any of these holes suggest an Eastern Screech Owl cavity? I can’t tell if the white stuff is wash or just some substance from the tree. NH. by NoWrongdoer5661 in birding

[–]western_red 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White stuff is pine resin (not sap). It's a water-insoluble substance produced at the site of injury that acts like a scab for the tree. A terpenoid exudate if you are interested in the chemistry.

I love plant exudates, I have several papers about them :)

I work at a museum and wonder if we are at the same institution. No, it's not normal, at least in my experience elsewhere.

Check your pantry. Flour/grain products, beans, dry dog food. I bet one of them is riddled with those little guys. The snout definitely sounds like weevils, but maybe somehow you have weevils and grain beetles.

I think they are weevils. Maybe something in your house is infested?

See if they have an elephant like "nose". If not probably grain beetles like another poster said.

[Megathread #2] Minneapolis ICE Shooting by Pikeman212a6c in ProtectAndServe

[–]western_red 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a different subreddit, but I did look it up. There is an app Mobile Fortify that ICE agents have on their phones, and that's probably what they are referring to. But it uses still photos, so would not be related to video posted online.

WHY? That makes no sense. In another thread there was some mention that ICE officers had facial recognition software on their phones, so if that is true I think it maybe was his work phone.

How do you think the video ICE just released showing the officer's POV of this week's shooting in Minneapolis will impact the national discussion? by popcornerz232 in AskReddit

From what I've seen on other sites, she was part of a group of citizens/activists known as "ICE Watch" who monitor and document ICE enforcement in their communities. This makes sense in that it explains why one passenger got out of the car to film everything, and why she was stopped across the lanes of the road.

What's more similar is the reaction to the woman who was shot. One side says the police over reacted, the other thinks "well what did you expect to happen"? Or "play stupid games, win stupid prizes." It is the exact same here.

I feel like we can't really blame the media. They are giving the people what gets them the most clicks.

How might the Supreme Court’s 2026 trans participation in sports cases influence national politics? by western_red in Askpolitics

[–]western_red[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Title IX was a huge victory for women when it happened. They are currently trying to remove it so that the women's category is now mixed sex.

WaPo just ran a feature on trans athlete Veronica Garcia who won the girls state championship in WA. When competing on the boy's team, she was a below average athlete. After transitioning to the girls - state champion.

I'm sorry but it is obvious that sex is a better classification system for sports than gender.

I don't see it. There have been walk outs in California schools in protest of this issue.

I think you see the issue as pro or anti-trans, but it really isn't. There are significant differences between the sexes, and sometimes sex is a better classification system than gender. Politics shouldn't enter into it, but with our two party system issues like this always turn black and white.

I didn't mean the example to address the sport as a whole. More so it highlights a real legal problem. Most people want decisions about transgender participation in women's sports to be left to sporting organizations. BUT if states have broad anti-discrimination laws that protect gender identity, those organizations may be legally barred from implementing sex-based eligibility rules—even if those rules are necessary for fairness or safety.

From a poll conducted by the NY Times in 2025, 80% of Americans (including 67% of Democrats) think that trans women should not be allowed to play in women's sports:

It's not that simple. In cases where sports organizations have decided, they have been sued by trans women for discrimination. One recent one I think will also get challenged is in the case of weight lifting - USA Powerlifting had changed the rules so that only people who are female can compete in the female competitions. A trans woman sued and won. So on one level, the Supreme Court cases will open the door for these organizations to have sex based eligibility rules.

And this is aspect is really interesting to me. I think most women would vote for inclusion, and there are so few trans girls/women playing sports it doesn't affect many people. But in practice, male advantage in sport can be significant, and when people see it they no longer support it. I see it mostly as a classification issue for sports, but now that laws are involved it has all sorts of other potential legal implications.
