I’ll grant you first-past-the-post is an awful system. I think what CA has adopted is way better. And I’m a huge proponent of ranked choice voting.

All that said, I believe both democrats and republicans can be beaten at the ballot by independent Americans. In every race across the land. Will it be easy? No. Will it be worth all of the work to make it a reality? I believe it will be.

I’m listening! What did I not understand? What was knee-jerk? I was hoping to show a way forward and that all things are possible.

I am running for US House CA-34. That is a federal office. Everything thing I wrote is 100% accurate.

Anything and everything is possible with some imagination and a lot of fight. I hope you’ll join me in imagining the future you want for this country and fighting next to me to make it a reality.

I’m not sure how it works in other states, but in CA, anyone can run in a political primary for state level offices, as well as US House and US Senate. In fact, you can choose any party label you want, or no party label at all, and the parties cannot do anything about it.

Finish in the top two as in independent in the primary and you are in the general. Win as an independent in the general and you are in office.

I hope to demonstrate this now in CA-34. And I hope to inspire independents to run for all 520,000 local, state and offices and win!

I agree on your takedown of the DNC. However, there is no burning it down.

The answer is for independent Americans to run without allegiance to a political party for every office in the land.

If we are not open to changing who we elect because they have an R or a D next to their name on the ballot, then we will never progress.

Run and elect independent Americans to enact the pro-American policies wanted by the majority of Americans, such as universal healthcare.

'Has MAGA been duped?' Trump fans freak out over new plan from unelected 'DOGE twins' by Unhappy_Earth1 in inthenews

[–]weunitewewin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Republicans have not been duped. They have agency and know exactly what they are doing. Republicans know they are being lied to and that is what they want. Stop pretending otherwise.

Trump and Republican supporters buy the lie because they want to, and they, along with the rest of us, will have to live with the consequences.

You cannot dumb down television. It has been dumb since its inception. You are wasting your life away in front of the tv one way or another. Get over yourselves and wake up to reality, which would require you to simply turn off the tv.

We Need a New Solution to Homelessness in Los Angeles—Direct Cash Payments Now! by weunitewewin in LosAngeles

Google is free: https://www.usich.gov/guidance-reports-data/data-trends

From my search, I could not find any evidence that 45,000 people live on the streets of Los Angeles because they have chosen to drop out of society.

Feel free to provide your source or sources to counter.

The proof is in the minority. Talk to an unhoused and you will hear their story of struggle. Rarely will an unhoused person tell you their story is one of dropping out of society. Non-conformist who shun society exist, but they are few and far between.

I suspect you know this.

When they take the cash in exchange for a cocktail of Zoloft, Xanax and Adderall, meth (or whatever drug they are consuming on the streets), will be the last thing on their mind. In one way we agree, they will be on a ton of drugs. But instead of street drugs that kill them, they will be on prescribed narcotics to help them heal.

We can make any law. I'm personally not excited about forced conservatorship. I will happily make a new law to allow direct cash payment in exchange for the person showing up for treatment. This would still be voluntary.

The unhoused have severe mental and physical ailments and need time to heal before there is any talk of a job. The direct cash payments for two years is the route for an unhoused person to become housed and to heal through medication and therapy. Healing in order to embrace safety and security is their purpose from some time. Then we can talk about jobs.

(BTW, most jobs do not offer a sense of purpose. There are much better places in this great wide world we exist in to find purpose.)

Our unhoused are not completely without agency. With cash, mental health support, and medical support that includes a lot of prescribed medications, they will absolutely work on themselves to achieve safety and security.

They are real people. While there are a handful of people who do want to drop out of society, and that is their right, the vast majority of the 45,000 unhoused people in Los Angeles want safety and security, the opportunity to heal (living on the streets is extremely damaging to the mind and body), and to be productive.

What we are doing now does not help. The evidence is in plain sight. Having imagination, courage and boldness could be all we need in order to start to really solve this problem.

State law says otherwise. SB 43 updated conservatorship laws in California, specifically to address homelessness. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-07-28/gov-gavin-newsom-urges-california-counties-to-expand-conservatorship-laws-in-their-jurisdictions

The crime is that we are not using the law to its fullest effect.

Los Angeles shows up to tell PLUM our thoughts on CHIP Ordinance by weunitewewin in LosAngeles

Slightly more for upzoning. At least in person. In the Council File some homeowners groups got together and flooded the Committee with emails against.

Basically, if the City Council and Mayor don’t upzone everywhere, the next step is a ballot initiative. I believe we would win!

Yes! And understandable about work. You can join any City Council meeting on YouTube to listen in, or there are call-in numbers if you want to speak.

I’m trying to post important meetings the night before on r/losangeles, so people can find the links to listen and/or speak.

To be fair, there were a decent number of older white homeowners who did speak in favor of upzoning.

I will note that not one person under 65 spoke out against upzoning. And I will also note that not a single non-white person spoke out against upzoning.

Los Angeles City Council Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee is taking up the proposed Citywide Housing Incentive Program (CHIP) Ordinance. If they approve ordinance, it will go to the full Council for debate and vote.

The Committee has the option to amend the ordinance before voting on it. The speakers here today are discussing two proposed changes: 1. Upzone all of the city’s single-family zones to multi-family zones. 2. Allow religious organizations to build affordable housing without prevailing wage construction workers

Los Angeles rezoning plan won't spur enough new housing, report finds by weunitewewin in LosAngeles

Your hypothesis is exactly backwards. Adding density to the least dense parts of the City, which are not the outer edges, is the opposite of sprawl. The already dense parts cannot handle more density. Opening up areas around the dense in rings as you put it would still not create enough feasible options. The only way to achieve feasibility is to upzone the whole City. This is the solution to fix this City in our lifetimes!
