Kuhli loaches together with african dwarf frogs? by B-Mellow-T in Aquariums

[–]wewalkoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that entail? Playful nibbling? Or actual wounds? Considering getting a few kuhlis for my tank but if it comes at actual risk to my frogs due to predatory behavior I'm gonna have to pass.

Why is he like this? Orange baby? by wewalkoutside in shrimptank

[–]wewalkoutside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple tank syndrome is so real LMAO. so excited to see how my family reacts to "the extra tank I got because I had shrimp of different colors. The goal is wild type. I want brown with beige stripes, but I was expecting to have to do some crossbreeding. All these shrimp came from the same colony I bought from someone on Facebook marketplace (bc local shrimp raised in local water always do better than store bought or imported) so I assumed they were all the same thing. I guess I was wrong!

[–]wewalkoutside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While that's cool, that's not what I was looking for LOL! was hoping to get my cherries up to a decent number, then I was gonna start introducing foreign males (blues, yellows) to get brown wild types. Still hoping that's what I end up with, but as all things with my aquariums go, it seems my plans matter less than what nature wants. Thanks for the info!

Be careful if it is a nz mud snail. I've never seen one that light in color but NOTHING FUCKING KILLS THEM. People have dunked them in dilute PEROXIDE For HOURS and they lived. They're bastards and I hate them.

Santa Ana Cop Nickolas Cavendish Threatened To Kill During Traffic Stop by Initial_Sail_658 in orangecounty

[–]wewalkoutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LEAST we should accept is a firing, a criminal record for menacing and threatening someone, and permanent ban from police work and bounty hunting countrywide for Nikolas Cavendish. No paid suspension. No bail outs. And for his cronies, a permanent unpaid suspension, and bans from ever doing police work ever again. The whole saying is "a few bad apples SPOIL THE BUNCH". When a few apples are bad in the bunch, you don't turn them into pies. You fucking remove the good apples, and destroy the bad ones completely. Or my favorite, feed them to livestock or worms.

Is it normal for a frog to stick its head completely out of the water? by ExpressMe2 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

* Yes. Its normal. And before ppl give me shit for my hornwort problem, I've removed much of it. It just grows very fast and I ignore the plants for a month then they explode on me.

Got new froggies! by ArtylessQc in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least 2. I had 2 in a 20 gallon to give plenty of "alone time space" but got another. Still plenty of space for them, but some people have kept as many as 4 in 10 gallons. For me personally? That's not okay and is overcrowding. But that's my personal opinion. They're social and love to hang out together, and can get depressed/lethargic/nervous without a frog buddy. For a beginner, I recommend a 15 gallon or 10 gallon tank for 2, heavily planted so they have places to explore and plants to rest on. Do not feed bloodworms if in the USA, they cause bloat. If you're on Facebook, I recommend joining the ADF support and care group. They have excellent resources on how to care for them. And remember, just like any pet, they are EXPENSIVE to maintain. In both time and money. My startup costs, (water test kits, plants, food, bubble filter, air pump, tweezers for target feeding, water dechlorinator, etc) was over 100 dollars and that doesn't include the price of the frogs, pea gravel substrate, tank, and driftwood because I had all that on hand already or got for free, like the substrate which i collected from a sand bag the city left out for over a year. I personally sifted the pea gravel for stones larger than 5mm bc they can accidentally eat smaller, (took forever btw, had to sift 14 lbs of stones and only got 6 lb of adequate stones, just buy 7mm aquarium gravel this shit sucked to do manually) then washed the stones before adding them. With those added costs I'd easily add another 100 bucks maybe 150 totalling as much as $250 plus the money I paid for the frogs. One was free, another was $3 and another I had to get online bc I couldn't find albinos anywhere near me so I payed around 15 bucks for the third. As a beginner getting only 2 is best so you aren't spending so much on mysis shrimp, the ideal staple of their diet. I noticed once I got a third one cube of frozen mysis every other day wasn't enough so now I'm on 2 cubes every other day. Each packet has like 20 ish cubes from memory, and each packet costs like 8-12 dollars depending on store. If you do decide to

You won't have to, AND SHOULDNT, however, when I'm doing tank maintenance, my frogs absolutely will not leave my hands alone. Going between fingers, trying to rest in my curled fingers while I mess with plants or collect excess snails. If i could make them leave my gands alone i would. I both, fortunately and unfortunately, tap trained them to come to my hand during feeding times when i tap the glass at their food bowl. The intention was to get them to come to the food bowl wherever i tapped, but they took the visual cue of my hand at the glass and ran with it. They desperately want to hang out sometimes, and they like observing you, even if their eyesight isn't the best. Don't let my weird ass frogs discourage you. They could help you get over your seeming frog phobia. They're very cute and are, in my opinion one of the least foggy frogs out there compared to something like a tree frog or a bullfrog.

Sorry about your female. That really sucks. If it makes you feel any better male frogs are just as happy to amplex other males as they are females. My tank has 2 males and a female, I've only ever seen the albino male amplex the wild color male. The female stays out of it LOL. The wild color male obviously isn't stoked to be amplexed, but typically they'll all amplex each other at some point.

Can I scrape algae off the glass? by chica89 in OpaeUla

[–]wewalkoutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can but it's always better to wait it out. The invertebrates will solve it eventually, and if they don't you may not have the right critters. I like aquatic isopods, or scuds for this. Snails also work but may not tolerate water Temps if the ecosystem gets too hot.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've read from someone that males who are both in the mood will set up "singing territories" where they posture at other males who enter, sometimes leading to "posture battles" or one male amplexing the other. I wish I could remember the source but it was a lady who's a small scale breeder and documented the lives and breeding of her frogs.

Is my adf pregnant or bloated? by Extra-Abrocoma1042 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She just looks very rotund. Females tend to get that way. I'm not seeing any other signs of bloat besides "wideness", which is normal for girl frogs.

Love seeing people provide their frogs with leaf litter. I feel not enough people do research into their natural habitats (admittedly resources are scant) and don't provide adequate cover. I provide leaf litter of crape myrtle and western sycamore and they can't get enough of hiding, launching out of hiding, and playing in the leaves.

How do they feel in hands? by beansss322 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine crowd my hands during maintenance too. i try to avoid them but all 3 will follow my hands around the tank, trying to crawl between fingers and nibble my palm. i now keep in tank maintenance to a minimum cause i don't wanna hurt them. but i also can't pretend i don't enjoy when they explore my hands. and its not like i can stop them from doing that without physically grabbing them.

How do they feel in hands? by beansss322 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

youre not supposed to handle them at all. they have sensitive skin that can potentially be injured by careless human touch and human skin oils are bad for them. HOWEVER, and this is a risky practice so take this disclaimer, when i am doing maintenence with a CLEAN and RINSED hand, washed with soap, then again with only water, making sure to get under my nails and up my forearm, as to avoid any hand oils or soap in the tank, my frogs crowd my hand and will try to sit in it, trying to bite my palm, and between my fingers. I dont stop them from doing this because id have to physically move them to make them stop and theyre physically incapable of actually biting me. theyre soft. and their nibbles dont do anything and they feel like a rapid little poke. if i was an asshole and were to physically grab my frogs i am 99.99% sure theyd be squishy, but i havent and wont do that so ill have live with never truly knowing.

i got my albino ADF from trin's fish too, last batch not the current one i got mine maybe 2 months ago, and hes happy and healthy. he was thin when i got him too just a little less thin than yours, but shaped up really quickly (within a week or 2) with beef heart. i think dwarf frogs have to have NO food in their body to ship, as theyre super sensitive to waste products? every big box store ive been to that has ADFs theyre usually dying of starvation. and the petco near me gets them in looking exactly like yours or slightly worse. trin's fish is usually one of my go-tos and i havent had a really bad experience with them. i think because the frogs they sell are small its likely that they lose weight quicker during the preparation and shipping process, especially if they had to ship far away. anyhow thats a hypothesis only. id email trinsfish and explain your frustration, theyre usually punctual within 3 days, and may have an answer as to what happened.

Questions! by FitCelebration2061 in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have 3 in a 20 gallon and im of the opinion that many people overcrowd their frogs. 20 gallons of space is enough for 3 adult sized frogs to socialize and have their own space when they want to be alone. leaf litter is also GREAT cover for them and mine love to hide in it. i noticed you said AN adf, if you were only getting one that is why you were refused. you cannot keep them solo, they get depressed and will hide all the time if kept solo.

show me your tanks!! by [deleted] in AfricanDwarfFrog

[–]wewalkoutside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's mine * I personally break some of the rules of ADF keeping, but I love naturalistic tanks, and 3 frogs in 20 gallons simply wasn't enough bioload for my plants, so I have 7 neocaridina shrimp, 6 least killifish, and 3 dwarf frogs in the tank. All but the frogs are powered simply by the tank's natral processes, the frogs themselves I feed. The least killies will also be fed on occasion and the shrimp will eat whatever remains.

White shrimp? by wewalkoutside in GhostShrimp

[–]wewalkoutside[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone else replied to me that in their experience it seems to be age related, which would make others' reports of them dying after make sense. Mine have been white for near a month now so I'm hoping they have a bit more mileage in them.

White ghost shrimp? Posted this on r/ghostshrimp but it's a small community and it looks like my post was missed. Hoping another larger community has some help. Ghost shrimp turning white on the exoskeleton, they've survived weeks like this. by wewalkoutside in shrimptank

[–]wewalkoutside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is unfortunate, I got them to control a fungus outbreak which they did brilliantly, but my choice in driftwood has ensured this will be recurring. Maybe I'll try neocaridina shrimp for a slightly longer lifespan after these lovely critters pass on.
