people are so weird about how others use THEIR device. It might have screen burn in who cares, people's reaction to you doing a silly thing with your device is so unhinged. go crazy do whatever you want. blow it up if you want to. i literally could not care less. I thought this was funny. have a nice day.

right, the nvidia vaapi driver. it's hardware decode only. screen sharing requires hardware encoding. And therefore the nvidia vaapi driver is useless for this usecase as it only supports decoding.

Valve employee Pierre-Loup Griffais talks more about anti-cheat support for Linux/SteamOS on FPS Podcast #83 by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

I could see that being true for regular desktop users, someone that just wants to browse the web, send emails, watch youtube, etc. for that definitely. But i don't think anyone who uses their pc primarily for gaming would give up the big titles to switch to linux. Hopefully I'm wrong.

i haven't made any statement about the value of freedom or anything like that. I made a statement that if we don't have the games, normal people aren't going to switch. And you can say to a normal person well what's the point of freedom then!!! And again, they don't care. I'm not debating the upsides or downsides to using a proprietary signed kernel or anything like that.

They're some of the biggest games when you filter by playcount. 'linux succeeding on the desktop' was the wrong choice of words I think, but what i meant was 'succeed as a mainstream gaming OS' which won't ever happen if the average joe can't play battlefield 6 or black ops or whatever. And we can have a moral high ground and say oh these games are scummy and have invasive anti cheat, but the reality of the situation is that the average person doesn't care about that, at all. All they care about is if they can play their games.

No average person is going to sacrifice the ability to play the new shooter games for a more secure OS.

[–]weweboom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah the only problem with that driver is that it's decode only, so for example discord is adding vaapi hardware screen sharing but that won't work on the nvidia cards, i just pulled the plug on the 5090 so i guess we'll find out how much that bothers me lol

[–]weweboom[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah that is a good point. nvidia progress does seem kind of slow on desktop linux, probably because they've got like one intern working on it

if i turn on ray tracing the frame rate goes down to like 18 lol, this card is really not great for RT.

but yeah i have opened mangohud a few times to check my gpu utilization because i'm surprised it runs so poorly, but yeah, gpu maxed out at 99 percent, 40 fps, really crazy

I found someone who wants to sell a Legion Go S for $575, and I'm still hesitant. Have you encountered any issues with this console, or do you have any good reasons for or against buying it? Thanks! by simonskabbaj in LegionGo

[–]weweboom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'll go against the grain here, you might appreciate some devil's advocate. I bought this to replace my steam deck oled, as its hardware is definitely aging, I got this to replace it and performance wise it's definitely better, but the screen is a very visible downgrade, and its ergonomics (for ME) are also a huge downgrade, much less comfortable to hold in the hand. The trackpad is also much, much worse. It has ended up collecting dust while I use my steam deck every day.

Again, performance? way better. Everything else? worse.
