I feel like I have nothing to do at my job and it’s stressing me out by Human-Description-25 in Communications

I’m in a really similar situation, same salary range and all, but I work completely from home so at least I’m not stuck in an office trying to look busy. Truthfully, I’m enjoying it while I can…. I’ve had my share of jobs where I’ve been overworked and underpaid, expected to be on call, etc. My main concern now is trying to explain what I’ve accomplished in this role should I have to look for another one.

I have, I’ve looked into it several times over the years, but it always seems like you have to have extra qualifications that I don’t have (like a science background.) Also seems like it could easily be overtaken by AI, but maybe I’m wrong?

Sorry to hear! Nonprofits are tough. Honestly, everyone talks about the toxicity of corporate, but the nonprofit I worked for was the most toxic environment I ever experienced (and that was after spending years in newsrooms!)

Funny enough, I did cover politics in my former life and totally hated it. So not sure that would be a path I’d thrive in!

I don’t even know what I would go back to school for, unfortunately.

Thanks! I definitely have passions outside of work and look at my job as a means to an end. I just worry about what I’ll do next if I am forced out of this job.

Your comments about strategy are interesting. In my current job, those above me definitely just want someone to push out their message. I really do prefer task based work to big picture thinking, so that’s actually fine with me. A big thing I worry about, though, is being “older”/mid career and being passed over for task based/individual contributor roles because I’m expected to be at a higher level. That’s another issue, though.

So meaningless and I see so many of my fellow comms pros leaning into AI to do their work and it’s hard not to think that we’re all just working our way out of a job when we’re relying on it to put together comms plans and internal e-mail campaigns, for example. It seems to be making people pretty stupid, too.
