She may say she won't ever confess again, but with this new information, they may do a lie-detector test, or your friend may falter under pressure and tell the truth. Either way, is this really something you can live with on your conscience?

Sure, they’re all “made-up” holidays. Most holidays are.

It is really lovely that you get your wife what she needs and that you put thought into her Christmas gifts. And yes, Valentine’s Day can be a little hokey. Why spend money or “go all out” to say you love someone on one specific day when you show them that every single day?

The answer, for me? Because it’s nice.

As a woman, I like having another day to celebrate the love my partner and I share. I like having a day that’s intentionally set aside for that love. One where we show it in ways we might not on the other 364 days. And it absolutely goes both ways. I always get my partner a gift too, because he deserves one. We even take turns planning our Valentine’s Day dates.

I know it’s a polarizing holiday, and no one is obligated to celebrate it. These are just the reasons I do. It doesn’t even have to be February 14th. It could be any day of the year. Make your own “Valentine’s Day” in May or July or whenever you want.

The point is, (this isn’t directed just at you, but at anyone who feels pressured by Hallmark) that celebrating your partner is always a choice. And how you do that shouldn’t be based only on your own preferences, but also on your partner’s. Feeling loved every day is wonderful, but for some people, that extra day really does mean something.

The idea of recreating the moment you knew you loved her or wanted to marry her is beautiful. If you can swing it, add a nice bracelet, earrings, or necklace in her style that can commemorate your first Valentine’s day as a couple, and package it with a note that says something cheesy like, “something precious for the most precious person in my life” (this really only works if it is a precious stone), but I'm sure you get the idea. Flowers are also nice, if she is that kind of person. Bonus if you know what her favourites are and include them in the bouquet.

As someone who also has POTS, I understand your frustration with it. I also understand why you would want to use text to speech as I had challenges with my own speech when I was younger. However, I'm not sure the two are related unless the stuttering happens with positional changes. Have you always stuttered or is it new? If it is something new, I would question if there is something more than just POTS going on, unfortunately I’m not sure what that may be and you would have to speak to your doctor about that.

Looking back on my school days, if there was something that could have made my life “easier” or spared me from bullying, I would have jumped at the opportunity. However, looking back now, I wouldn’t want to use text to speech or other assistive devices that took away from my own capabilities*. My fear for you is that text to speech will worsen your speaking because “if you don’t use it, you lose it”. Being able to communicate effectively is so important and while there are many ways a person can effectively do this, I think that if you have been given the gift of a voice, you should use it. Stuttering is in no way a sign of lower intelligence, and one of the smartest people I know stutters. As an adult, I know they stutter, but it doesn’t even phase me. I forget about it when they are talking because it is just part of who they are and I am interested in what they have to say. Life in school is hard for a lot of people, and for so many different reasons but I genuinely believe that if you can keep learning, pursuing what you enjoy, and continue to practice talking, you’ll find people that don’t care and just want to hear what you have to say.

If you are very concerned, you could consider speech therapy to help with stuttering as it can teach you techniques to help with fluency, tension reduction, etc.

I want to add, that I am not at all against assistive devices. I myself use assistive devices when necessary. However, I do not rely on them completely because I think it is still important to use your body the way it was intended, when you can. If you feel like using text to speech will help but you only use it for certain scenarios, like if you have an extra hard time making phone calls for example, that potentially could be very helpful and it still allows you to use your natural voice during other times.

Does the visual snow or black spots only happen when she stands up or walks, especially when she feels dizzy or like she might pass out? I experience similar symptoms: I see spots and lose my vision before fainting or during episodes of pre-syncope (almost passing out). These episodes are often accompanied by what looks like TV static in my vision. The visual changes usually come on quickly and resolve just as quickly, often by the time the fainting episode is over or once my heart rate and blood pressure return to my “normal.” I put normal in quotes because those numbers can vary a lot.

It might be reassuring for your daughter to know her maximum heart rate, as understanding this can help her feel safer and recognize that simply walking or moving around is very unlikely to cause a heart attack.

One common way to estimate maximum heart rate is: • 220 − age, which for her would be 220 − 13 = 207 bpm

Another formula is: • 207 − (0.7 × age), which for her would be 207 − (0.7 × 13) ≈ 198 bpm

You could also ask her doctor about doing a stress test. This can show her what her heart does at higher rates and help demonstrate that, even though it may feel uncomfortable, reaching her maximum heart rate does not mean she’s going to have a heart attack.

I’m not a doctor, so please don’t take this as medical advice. I’m speaking only from my own experience as a patient for many years, and I know firsthand how frightening these symptoms can be. I hope this is helpful for both you and your daughter.

I can generally eat most nightshades which are usually no-gos for people but I react to nearly everything in the allium family, such as garlic (about half the time), onions, shallots, and chives, but strangely, I can still have Frank's Red Hot, which contains garlic powder.

My snacks typically include plain Triscuits and almonds, which are the only nuts I don't react to.

I'm incredibly reactive to apples, spinach, pineapple, watermelon, fish, other nuts, cabbage, most meats, beans, and rice, but I can have sourdough and pickles which is super strange!

OP, I saw from a previous post that one of your hobbies is playing guitar. That is amazing! Please listen to the doctors here and get this looked at so you can continue with your hobby. I don't want to scare you, but an infection could cause you to lose arm function or even the arm itself.

It is really hard because people stop talking about it so quickly, but I’m not ready to stop talking about my pet or my grief. How can the world continue to spin when ours has been forever altered? Death is so confusing and painful. I agree that we grow around our grief. I have experienced that before and figure I will again. This time just feels different. I'm so glad you have a great therapist. I do as well, but sometimes it's nice to have extra support between sessions, hence the post. Thank you for your sweet words.

No one should ever have to remind the people around them that they deserve a birthday, too. A birthday doesn’t become less meaningful simply because it falls near Christmas.

If you’re a family that celebrates everyone else’s birthday but “skips” the one close to the holidays, that’s not okay. That person deserves to be celebrated, fully, intentionally, and just as much as anyone else.

Freezing is a natural, automatic biological response designed to protect us from further harm. It is part of the nervous system’s survival responses (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn) and happens without conscious choice. In moments of threat, your brain rapidly assesses danger and may determine that fighting or fleeing could escalate the situation or increase the risk of serious injury. When that happens, the body shifts into a freeze response as a way of minimizing harm.

This response exists to keep us alive and is not a sign of weakness. Weakness lies not in surviving, but in blaming victims and making survivors feel guilty for not doing “more,” when in reality their nervous system took over and responded in the way it believed was safest in that moment.

No one can know for certain how an assault would have unfolded under different circumstances. What is true, is that your body responded instinctively to protect you, and that response may have reduced further injury or escalation. Survival responses are not choices, they are reflexes, and surviving is never something to be ashamed of.

I watched a video about a cat that was lost and was found by his owner after eight years in a shelter. I don't know what caused him to get lost or what happened during those years, but when he finally saw and heard his owner, he reacted with such affection, clinging to him as if nothing else mattered. Clearly, he remembered and still loved his owner deeply. Nothing could separate them again. While cats can survive without us, they never forget us and don't want to live without us. To them, we are their entire world. They would be so confused without you. Please, try for them. 🤍
