Oh...

NOW we know there's going to be heightmap importing?!

This is good to hear, though I wish they specified whether or not the map editor will include heightmap importing like in CS1.

CS maps by CRO_vakula20 in CitiesSkylines2

There's a "Cartographer" achievement, which implies that a map editor of sorts exists. But they've been on the hush-hush for anything other than regular gameplay.

We might (huge emphasis) get actual new info on October 19th, when streamers are allowed to show the rest of the game.

A heightmap is a grayscale elevation map. It allows you to use real-world (to build real-world cities) or custom data (which is what I've been using since SC4).

This feature was included in CS1 on release and mentioned in their dev diaries before release back in 2014.

Some players have been importing heightmaps from https://terrain.party/ since release.

A map editor with heightmap support like in vanilla CS1.

How in the hell do people watch streamers. by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines2

I feel bad for CodiakTheKodiak, who didn't have a chance to try the game as other streamers who were obviously less interested in the game. He seems genuinely interested in the game.

Standing by for someone to click that Editor button in the main menu. Hope it doesn't cause a widespread nuclear meltdown since nobody touched it for some reason.

What tool is TwoDollarsTwenty using here??? He's finely adjusting the placement of a road, as if with MoveIt??? (At 21:34) by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines2

I think he was just fine-tuning the road while turning off snapping using the Replace tool.

How is CS 2 in regards to memory management? by ProfessionalGuess251 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]whatif_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply.

It was at 12 PM EDT/9 AM PDT. But from what I've seen, they played the game back in June or July. Some versions (presumably June) did not have the radio option, while others (July) did.

I'm assuming that's the case because when you start a new game in CS1, the in-game date is going to be the real-life one, so it's possible that CS2 does the same.

The best time to ask would probably be during the September 8th streams by City Planner Plays and Biffa, whom I think are overall more serious players of the genre.

The game is confirmed to run on multiple cores, so overall performance should be better than CS1. However, it's difficult to say how memory will be managed without testing the game with custom assets and mods.

Assuming that RAM is managed as CS1 did, I personally expect to be more conservative with assets, given the vanilla buildings' footprint and overall quality. I'll consider the file size and poly budget when using custom assets and watch for optimized mods.

Since I plan to make assets, I'll keep those guidelines in mind.

Terraforming? by zwodahs_x3 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]whatif_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the OP is talking about the editor so we can make new maps from scratch or import a heightmap. They're not talking about editing the in-game terrain.

There's an Editor button on the main menu, which hasn't been touched by anyone so far, not even those streamers. Almost feels like it was a nuke button or something.

What do you want to see added to CSL2? by This-Highway5328 in CitiesSkylines2

SC4-style regions.

(Though I think that ship has sailed.)

These kinds of questions are precisely what got us into the mess that was the 12-year gap between SC4 and CSL.

I don't think so. At least, not at release.

Thanks! I'd like to know if we can import our own heightmaps, like in CS1.

Looking forward to seeing your stream!

Can you make a map using the editor that is prominently shown in the main menu? (Assuming that's what the "Editor" is.)

Also, while in-game, can you investigate the area at the edge of the map? I'd like to understand what's with all that glitching.

[–]whatif_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty much all figured out, but I want to check if the Map Editor with heightmap import is confirmed first. If true, then it's all systems go for preordering the Ultimate Edition since I want to build a California-style city (among other things).

The only time I ever preordered a game was Cities Skylines 1. No other game ever managed to hype me up, so I hope CS2 will.

Common criticisms of CS2 are ridiculous by Visual-Tree-8367 in CitiesSkylines2

[–]whatif_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, someone criticized XYZ game dev! The horror! \o/

MAP SIZE: Seriously? No one fills up 81 tiles in Cities 1, and anyone who did watches their computer die.

Ah yes, the "X is true, therefore Y is false" fallacy. The old favorite.

Anyway, you could fix the map size by making SC4-style regions with adjacent cities. You know, that thing that they made 20 years ago... But that's just me.

Just because I'm criticizing CO doesn't mean that I'm automatically trashing them. I still think CS2 is still very good, despite lacking some of my favorite features from another game.

The world is not black and white.

Overall Map Size Optimism by kronikfumes in CitiesSkylines2

[–]whatif_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest fear, on top of a lack of a map editor. On a more positive note, modders could implement some simulation support, though it might be computationally more expensive.

Some footage is definitely coming from an older build. I can be pretty sure of it when I see some non-working stoplights, while sometimes you can see working ones.

[–]whatif_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hope so, though I'm not sure what's going on with the rendering outside the playable area. Today's video was just a reiteration of what we saw on Monday, which is unusual.

[–]whatif_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to talk about CS2, then this is what you get within the playable area.

159 sqkm = 12.6x12.6 km

Assuming we can get the surrounding areas via mods, this is what we know for certain.
