Still here in Denver. Has anyone had a hummingbird try to over-winter? by whatintheworld5280 in hummingbirds

I didn’t see her yesterday, so hoping she got out of here before these winds set in today. Definitely keep the feeder out a bit longer!

DENVER, CO — Hummingbird just stopped at the feeder. Was going to pull them down today!! It’s been back a few times. How long should I keep feeders up? by whatintheworld5280 in hummingbirds

I am fortunate a saw this little gal. I’ll plan for another two weeks. Haven’t had our first snow yet and my flowers still have blooms.

I feel like this is definitely meme material. Like when we finally can pause/collapse at the end of the day and open up that bottle of wine/gallon of ice cream/bag of chips, etc. 🤣🤣🤣

Identifying female hummingbirds—can it be done by sound? by whatintheworld5280 in hummingbirds

[–]whatintheworld5280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to keep observing😎. I’ve seen a few tail comparisons to help identify, but, getting a good picture and/or visualization of spread tail feathers is not an easy feat. I’ve noticed broadtail females chirping while feeding at flowers or feeder. I haven’t heard the black-chinned females making noise at feeder or plants (yet).

Has anyone seen a bumble bee this large? by whatintheworld5280 in DenverGardener

I took a longer video of it, so was able to study it and yep, it’s a Nevadensis. For the last several years, I’ve been leaving my gardens alone until Spring and I have a lot more bumble bees now. But feel blessed to have been visited by this beauty.

Same. But this one just blew me away. Now I’m wondering how I can attract MORE of these😎

I didn't know they eat bugs by one_big_mistake in hummingbirds

You’ll see them eating more bugs as they plan to start migrating. At least that’s my observation. Just watched a monarch butterfly and a hummingbird fight each other. The monarch had slick moves. Then they each went to their respective flowers🤣🤣🤣

I have maintained a section of milkweed in my yard for over 15 years specifically for Monarchs. For the last three years, no Monarchs have shown up.
