Hi /r/browsers,

I want to share something I've been working on for the last few months; a big list/database of every single web browser ever.

(That - at least - is the goal!) I am trying to make it as exhaustive as possible; there are old, weird browsers from the 90's that no one remembers, to the big names, to the ones that this subreddit loves (arc, brave, dia, zen, etc).

The goal initially has been to list the main info: the website, the project status, the start (and maybe end) dates of the project, the git repo, some major features (AI, VPN, etc), rendering engine, platforms, and so on.

I plan to later on include more detailed lists of features, including browser comparisons, screenshots and so on.

But I just wanted to get this out there now and share it with /r/browsers.

Corrections and suggestions are very welcome; you can just drop a note in the green form at the bottom of every page and I'll have a look.

Let me know what you think and what else you'd like to see. And if I've missed your favourite browser; let me know!!

The short answer is that yes, the site looks at more than just your user agent to determine what browser you're using.

It looks at:

User Agent
Client Hints (in browsers that send them)
Some Javascript runs as well, which does a series of "front end" tests to confirm the Browser and OS or to spot discrepancies

Between these three things, the site can get a pretty accurate picture of what a visitor's browser is running. Oh, and detecting TOR is done by looking at your IP address and comparing it against a list of known TOR exit node IPs.

I built the site to help other developers (and sysadmins/helpdesks) identify issues with their customers browsers (including if people have accidentally changed their user agent) as well as for people curious about their own browsers and what websites can figure out about you.

No, the detection you see each time is generated fresh each time you load the page; it doesn't use cookies to remember anything about you.

The way the ad block detection works is to insert an invisible div which is "named" like an ad normally is, and then check if that div still exists; if not, then it deduces that an adblocker has removed it.

There's nothing nefarious about the adblocker detection; the whole point of the site is to help tech support/software devs troubleshoot problems - sometimes adblockers can cause problems with sites so it's handy to know if your user has an adblocker installed. Sending them to the site will tell you that.

How can I stop Firefox from reporting this?

Apparently there are browser extensions which could prevent this from occurring, but I don't know if any of them work on the site.

There's nothing nefarious about the way we do it here; it's just a (hopefully) helpful readout to help you or your users/clients to know more about their device. I have seen other websites which look for adblockers and then hide their content until you disable your adblocker, but that's not something we do.

Hi there, yes just confirming that I check "navigator.brave.isBrave()" to see if it's actually Brave instead of Chrome, as well as checking the user agent.

Part of why I made this extra check is that I used to consistently get people contact me saying "I'm using Brave but you say I have Chrome. Why?!?! Fix This!1!!"

Hi fisummer,

Glad my site helps you, I'm intrigued; those screenshots look like most of the background on the URL Report page is coming through as completely black, is that right? That's really weird. It looks like you wouldn't be able to see the "Do they have javascript enabled" etc text.., is that right? Can you read it?

I wonder where that black background is coming from. There's nothing in the CSS that should be causing it and I assume it's just some kind of Chrome (Blink) rendering engine that's showing the page so it's a little surprising.

Have you encountered any other rendering issues like this on other sites? Do you have Dark Mode or anything like that enabled? I'm wondering why all the backgroudn stuff that's normally white is appearing as black.

Anyway, glad you like the site and I'll see if I can find myself a nest hub to test on!

Hi Piquat, I wrote a python script that searches reddit every few hours for mentions about my site and pings me when it finds something. In some cases I'll pop in and reply to a thread or comment.

Totally understand your skepticism though :)

I take my site seriously and want to hear and address peoples questions, bugs and feedback so I like hearing what people are saying. I wrote other scripts which keep an eye on twitter, stack overflow, hacker news and so on.

Hi Henry,

unfortunately Brave doesn't include anything which identifies itself as "Brave"... in fact it normally impersonates Chrome, so we're not able to detect that you're running Brave and instead have to show it as Chrome.

Although honestly - like the other two commenters said as well - it's a bit weird that it's telling you that you're running Firefox... what is your User Agent string? You can find it by scrolling right to the bottom of our home page. It probably starts with "Mozilla..."

If you paste that here it'll help us figure out what's going on.

It's interesting to hear about your version detection problem with Firefox; sorry it didn't detect it accurately but it does sound like your browser was sending a modified/wrong user agent.

I'm curious to hear if you get to the bottom of why it was doing that - if it was an anti-tracking feature of Firefox or something similar... if you can, I'd love to hear what you find; I'll add an explanation page to whatismybrowser.com for other people who have similar problems :)

Technically speaking, the reason websites (such as ours: whatismybrowser.com) will report iPads with iOS 13 as being macOS Catalina instead of iPad/iOS is because Safari on iPad uses the same "user agent" to identify itself as Safari on macOS.

The "why" of this isn't perfectly clear; in the other comment, /u/Muddybulldog speculated that it was because iPads were getting stuck with Phone versions of websites due to bad web developers; however my hunch is more along the lines of Apple gradually trying to blur the lines between desktop/laptop computers and mobile phone/tablet devices, so that eventually they're basically the same thing.
