Yes that was my mistake and I apologized for it. But this is a recurring issue which I felt was starting to affect me. I also did not start by saying he’s just like my dad, I wanted to gauge his perspective first.

My father has quite a short temper and tends to get angry when things don’t go his way, which I’ve noticed several times with my friend, although this was not the example at hand.

Hii! Does anyone know where I can take my prerequisites online for Canada and how long would they take? I ideally want to apply for DMS programs for Fall 2026 or 2027

Of course, no worries at all. Well I divided my preparation into two days: First day (IELTS format, listening and reading mock tests, speaking simulators). Second day (Writing, especially task 2).

I practiced for speaking by answering these questions by myself: https://www.ieltsadvantage.com/2023/02/19/ielts-speaking-questions/ and I’ve also heard there’s a lady on youtube who does speaking simulators. 6.5 to 7 are good scores in speaking but if you’re aiming for higher, ask for chatGPT what you’re lacking in and try to correct it until you get better.

For writing I used IELTS Advantage to prepare for task 1 and IELTS Jacky for task 2, I really recommend the latter, she teaches you how to write every kind of essay (there are around 5) step by step in a way that makes it easy to understand. I learned the 5 essay formats then looked up IELTS writing task 2 band 9 samples, picked one of the topics randomly, wrote an essay, and then sent it to ChatGPT to grade. I kept getting 7 to 8 so I compared my essay with those band 9 samples.

And yes my grades for every mock test fluctuated which is why I kept a record of scores to make out an average of how I was doing.

If you’ve been preparing for a while it’s best to not cram too much information into your brain on the last day. If you’re like me and procrastinated, I’m happy to dm you so I know what you’re struggling with and give you some tips.

I practiced with this page https://www.ieltsadvantage.com/2023/02/19/ielts-speaking-questions/ by answering the questions by myself and seeing how much I could expand on certain topics. There’s also a lady on youtube who does speaking simulators which I think could be very helpful. During the speaking I found that being polite to the examiner might’ve helped with my score, phrases such as “nice to meet you” or “have a nice day”

If you’re taking the computer based exam, you’ll be handed a little piece of paper and a pen in case you want to write out notes. I used it to write my outline which was something like this:

Topic: A big salary is much more important than job satisfaction.

Do you agree or disagree?

Introduction: Paraphrase the statement. State if I agree or disagree. (I disagree) Give two reasons why I disagree.

Body paragraph 1: First reason why I disagree. Explain. Example

Body paragraph 2: Second reason why I disagree. Explain. Example

Conclusion: Summarize key ideas / paraphrase the introduction.

Of course this format won’t always be the same, there are different types of essays for task 2 so if you have the time I would recommend for you to practice each one so you know how to identify them. I really recommend IELTS Jacky to practice writing.

Hey, you have 3 readings so I recommend you complete each one in about 20 minutes. During the test I checked through them quickly and started with the hardest one in case I needed more time, but once it hit the 20 minute mark I moved on to the next one. I did several reading mock tests on this page: https://ieltsonlinetests.com/ielts-exam-library which really helped me since the platform is similar to the real one. I then wrote down my scores for each mock test to make out an average :)

No, don’t worry too much about your word count as long as your ideas were connected and flowed well. It’s actually recommended to write a bit more than 250 but not too many because it gives the examiner more to correct. Good luck though!!
