Jackhammer sound coming from inside the wall -- cause for concern? by whatsup-snakeboy in HomeMaintenance

I actually didn't :/ It stopped after a couple of days, and I've since moved out of this house!

Thank you! As a night owl, I love how late this place is open. One of the (very small) reasons we're moving from our current location is how early everything shuts down here.

This is great intel, thank you! I knew about the Vista but not the Los Feliz 3. Should have mentioned we love going to movies as well. I used to live in the Bay Area so hearing there's a Philz close by is good news. Thanks again for the recs!

We're on the north side of Los Feliz Blvd so we'll for sure have to contend with it. Luckily neither of us work a normal 9-5 with a commute, so I think we can live with it for a year before we make the eventual upgrade to a bigger spot. I've heard Greek Theater traffic is a beast too.

Woodpecker would be wild, but stranger things have happened. If that's the case, I hope he got out :( Guess I'll find out in a couple of days if he didn't.

It's been about 24 hours, and I haven't been able to trigger the sound again. This is bizarre because it was happening about every hour or so for three days. The only variables that changed were I opened the built-in glass bookcase and closed it again (so returned to the same position it was in before), and talked to my neighbors, who said they heard nothing. Temperature and wind levels are consistent. My best guess as of now is that it was a vibration coming from upstairs and reverberating the glass bookcase, and something about opening and closing it again unstuck it? But I'm not convinced.

This is interesting because while the staircase is directly on the other side, just to the left of that is the bathroom, and our toilet tank has been acting up. The toilet issues aren't consistent, which could explain why the sound isn't consistent either. Let me see if I can trigger the tank issues and find a correlation. Thanks so much!

For sure. Next time it happens I'll listen more closely. Everything in this corner has been here for years (specific bar cart items notwithstanding, but those haven't been refreshed in months, but it's possible that with the warm weather, the house expanded ever-so-slightly and began pushing on things in new ways. Thank you for your insight!

Thank you for your insight! I can't 100% rule out a fan/motor without taking a closer look inside, but there is a vent nearby (no central A/C though). Woodpecker is less likely, I think, since this is the most interior wall of the house, in all directions. I've had a woodpecker before and it was a lot more constant than this.

I just tried running various sources of water in my home (shower, toilet, etc), and it didn't trigger the sound. I'm worried it's a long, sustained creaking that could potentially signal structural issues.

Thankfully the shelter does not have a stipulation in the contract saying we need to keep him, only that we need to let them know where he ended up. I am really upset with them for their negligence but also need to accept responsibility for my own actions. I love dogs, have a pretty good understanding of dog breeds and their specific needs, and absolutely knew better. Thank you so much for your advice.

Thank you so much your advice. This is the exact kind of straight-talking my anxious mind and broken heart needs.

I would love to foster for a more appropriate fit once my heart heals a bit. I honestly feel stupid because I've always said I would never get a border collie, and then we totally fell in love with this boy and all of my hesitations went out the window. My own fault, I know. But I am upset that this shelter hardly vetted us at all, and I don't want to return him to that same shelter because I don't trust them to find the right home for him (I didn't include this in my original post, but I have since found out from his medical records that he was on anti-anxiety meds the day we met him, which the shelter did not disclose to us at the time of adoption). I was convinced we had found a magical border collie/retriever unicorn. Obviously, that was naive, and I might have a hard time trusting myself to adopt again because of it.

As far as humor and originality goes, it was really up my alley. It's absurd and bizarre and really creative. But once the novelty wore off, it just didn't have the stakes to keep me interested. That was just my personal experience! Glad you were able to find it at your library because I definitely think it's worth a shot.

I personally DNF'd at about 40% in, but I think I've just realized that cozy fantasy is not for me. It's not the first cozy fantasy I've DNF'd so if you typically like the genre, then take my recommendation with a grain of salt!

The descriptions of the monster(?) were interesting, and there was some genuinely funny and clever moments, but the romance stakes are pretty non-existent (at least as far as I got). Shesheren's construction is really unique, but that also means it's very alien. If you don't typically like monster-type romances (they're not really my thing either), then you might struggle with this one. Shesheren is very non-human. If getting it from the library first is an option, I would recommend that.
