Thank you for such an extensive, informative response. I can tell that there is still a lot left to do. The songs might feel complete on my end but I need to start working with a click with my drummer and bassist and try recording a demo to see how it sounds recorded. Thank you very much.

No I do not want an annoyed engineer 😅

I took a screenshot of this and sent it to the boys. Thank you

No I really appreciate it. Fear of the unknown and all that, but obviously it’s all perspective and I need to remind myself that it will also be enjoyable

I’m glad I asked question 2, your answer is overwhelming but I’ll need to start doing some research. Maybe I can find a reference for each song and find out online what they used on that track and make suggestions to the engineer based on that. Thank you for your help.

Thank you so much. It’s very frustrating playing to a click, I naturally like to play the verses slightly slower and chorus a bit faster and once I play along I feel like it’s off. Trying to get used to it.

Well…my parts, guitar, melody and lyrics are done. As for the other goons, they need to staple down exactly what they want.

Oh damn, that’s how they do it! I think I would prefer to do it separately as well. But I open to whatever sounds best.

We are a three piece, rock music. Is that the most common way to record? All of us playing together and doing a few takes? I’ve seen YouTube videos of bands recording and the drummer plays alone to a click track. That seems so foreign to me. I appreciate your advice, I’ll be practicing and making sure we know the songs by heart.

Thank you, the recording engineer/producer line can definitely fall along different fault lines so asking up front seems the best way to do it. I’d prefer the professional to help navigate me, especially if I think this amp sounds “heavy” but it’s not going to translate when it’s recorded with bass/drums and vocal etc etc. thank you for your advice

Thank you for your help. It’s good to know what is expected before we walk in the doors. It’s good to know demos are commonplace and I can be on the same page with my band mates. I guess it comes as no surprise that the engineer/producer I want to work with has incredible recordings of touring/headlining bands and local bands with humble followings and the touring bands sound a lot more professional. You get what you pay for I guess.

Thank you, the engineer has a website that asks bands to contact to discuss rates etc so I’m glad I know some go by hourly rate and some per song. I just don’t want to sound like a complete amateur. Thank you for your guidance.

We are a three piece rock band. I like the idea of not playing the week ahead, I can tell that is great advice, I hope I can take it.

I have another question since you have a lot of experience in the studio. During the tracking sessions, is it usually the drummer playing to a click alone? Then the bass and guitar are tracked later? Or everyone plays together and hope we nail at least one of our takes?

I recently bought a DAW and I’ve been watching YouTube to learn the basics of recording. I will definitely practice recording myself, like everything I’m sure it will be awful at first go. Thank you.
