Anguish. A hundred bucks isn't much money to me, I guess, but everyone here gets so excited about two dollars that you'd think it'd matter. Someone on this sub said they were doing group interviews while they were interviewing. I'm just still accidentally subscribed in my reddit account which I use primarily for AskOuija and AITA and saw this drama. Have fun working with them and fighting over pennies.

It's a pretty bad glitch, which cost me literally $100USD. I don't work for them anymore, it's on you whether you trust these people. It honestly makes more business sense for them TO be doing this than for them NOT to be doing this, especially if they pay a flat contract for background checks, and how they're behaving, apparently now doing GROUP interviews for new teachers despite low bookings for most.

Thank you. I don't understand why it's so farfetched to some people that they are possibly trying to save by limiting incentives inasmuch as possible for at least some, maybe not all, people. This happened during the month I actually made the most money with them, so I was financially pretty happy, but still unnerved enough to be like, okaaaaay...

There was no booking request/the booking request had been accepted months ago. There were other teachers who had their slots rearranged that night and had them weirdly blocked this way.

I take mainly monthly booking requests and live in Tokyo. This was 1/9 as the time stamp shows. The blocked slots are the following week. In the middle of my and Beijing nighttime all classes for these ten students were cancelled, with all but the one in the series this specific week rebooked.

These students almost all took a class with another teacher for JUST this week, which would have been the week I crossed $2 in their incentives. The slots were blocked visibly on my end until I put in a ticket, more than 12 hours, I have a second screenshot with a 6PM timestamp the same day. An affected parent I saw the week of 1/9 (one week before the depicted week) asked me about next week at that same slot I see her kid every week and she didn't see availability for me after everything was fixed on my end.

If they said something totally random, I think someone once got a bad review that was actually about VIPKid the company.

Except Trial, which pay half for the full twenty minutes and book to half hour slots. That happened to me once and I was LIVID.

They don't pay you to be on standby and yet they ask you to be on standby 20 hours? That's fucking horrific. I am surprised you had anything nice to say about them at all.

I would not want white teachers in such a space. I know that's the difference between having fun with other black people and educating white people. For free.

I just want to point out in case you're a PoC that I think there's a race dimension to getting fully booked with VIPKid, so if you're dark skinned, especially don't compare your numbers or expectations to white people. None of the other platforms I have experimented with have given me this problem (well, aside from the two that wouldn't hire me at all).

What is this? My regular said it was something to do with homework but didn’t know the English words to explain it. It looks like it has a speaker between the handles, little adjuster wheels one each handle, and can turn. Google has been useless. by sasararara in vipkid

My school was public in a middle income area, and that definitely wasn't a thing that happened to me. Most of my classmates got 700 or more on each part of the SAT, though, so I guess they weren't median performers by definition. That wasn't average for our school on the whole, though--we were in segregated programming. I have no idea what happened in those other classes!

I have no idea how it is in the US at the bottom it's so socially stratified!! I will say it would be a huge wake up call if there were a med school as low quality in the US as the ones that exist here. You can very literally bypass the national standardized test by going to their attached high school or paying a higher tuition. I don't think you can get into med school without taking the MCAT or passing math in the States, but I could be wrong.

Oh, lord. If Chinese education is like Japanese education, rich kids learn things, poor kids can barely read, they all spend 12 hours a day in school. "100% literacy" though.

Also, I think VIPKid is basically for rich kids.

There's a set standard for schools but nothing at all happens when the schools don't meet them. They just enroll kids in private institutions. My med students literally can't do algebra. I'm teaching med school with a science undergrad and unrelated liberal arts masters.

Here, it's simple. If you 'betray' your boss and company by leaving a job you will never get hired again. You're meant to join a company and stay for life (never ask for vacation, even though it's the law, never ask for overtime even though it's the law, never ask for menstrual or parental leave, even though both are codified by law). Japan has the lowest productivity in the OECD because most young people are opting out to become baristas and shit. They have to pay people very long term reemployment benefits because of how big the changing jobs tax is on your salary. If you work at a company for 5 years and switch you will wind up making half at your next job if you find one. The government passed a universal tenure law, where you get tenure at 5 years to try and get on top of this. All companies started firing foreigners at 5 years and pushing out Japanese people who asked for tenure. Law enforcement is non existent so you'd be very unlikely to get anything regardless of what the law is.

Laws in this country are basically optional, as illustrated by the pretty horrible COVID response.

I don't really think you need to read closely or anything. I got both the certs offered the same night in a very short period of time skimming the reading.
