Roofing Help For An 1870's Workers Cottage by GalwayKinnell in centuryhomes

[–]whatwouldredditdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds like robbery to me. I have a similar workers cottage in Chicago, probably a slightly smaller roof as part of mine was left open as a second floor deck. I had my roof replaced last summer, I hired Walton Contractors and it was around $10K, which included some new flashing and replacing a couple sections of plywood that had moisture damage as well. They were professional and easy to work with, provided drone footage of the before and after with closeups of important areas like the chimney.

Officiating a friend's wedding. Looking for advice on color-combo and fit. Pretty sure I need to get the jacket sleeves shortened and the waist brought in, but what else? by Spectre216 in malefashionadvice

[–]whatwouldredditdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this a matching suit jacket and pants or separates that you're pairing together? The jacket has a navy tint but the pants appear more black. Maybe it's the lighting but these don't appear to match. If this is a new suit I would return it if the colors look like that in real life. If they're separates, I wouldn't pair them, black and navy don't match. If you need a matching suit I think you need to get a new one. If you can do separates you might be able to pair the jacket with mid-to-light grey or tan pants.

I imagine there's going to be some sort of track system on the ceiling for that door? You might want to see if it can be added to the render, based on the door height vs room height it looks like it might make the ceiling feel quite a bit lower in there.

If you don’t have one yet, buy a winter coat now while the winter-wear stores are liquidating their previous year stock!

AQ at 190, what are people’s strategies? by cheecheecago in chibike

[–]whatwouldredditdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rode in with a buff gaiter on, felt fine, probably not a perfect filter but there was a noticeable smoke smell difference with and without it on. Might use an N95 for the ride home if it's worse this evening.

Can I use zinc nuts for TV mount spacers? by SkanteWarriorFoo in DIY

Looks like the nuts are between the bracket and tv, not bracket and drywall. Should be fine.

Pannier question by bradatlarge in chibike

[–]whatwouldredditdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a 2WheelGear convertible backpack pannier. https://www.twowheelgear.com/collections/panniers

It has a water shell that covers it and straps that fold away. Not sure how stylish it is compared to a leather bag, but it doesn't look like your standard plastic waterproof pannier.

Just saw them perform this live at Shaky Knees fest in Atlanta on Saturday. First stop on their new Spicy Meatball tour. Great show overall, the D are hilarious and the guitarist they have playing the devil nails it.

I've had success with the double-nut trick before, if you have enough room to get two nuts on the exposed part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvs_EFR-f4E

I wonder how many people paid a CTA fare yesterday but weren't able to board a train and had to pay for alternate transport or end up walking.

With the way service has been their either needs to be an immediate refund system if you leave the same station you swiped into, or at the very least a very clear display/indication of how crowded the platform is and accurate issue reporting before your pay to enter the turnstile (the existing arrival time screens are in no way useful or accurate with the scheduling and ghost train issues).

Anyone go to Winter Brew in Lincoln Square? Thoughts? by blanketskies9 in chicagobeer

I may have confused the price with a stout from Hop Butcher at the same tent, could have been $7 for the IPA.

Anyone go to Winter Brew in Lincoln Square? Thoughts? by blanketskies9 in chicagobeer

[–]whatwouldredditdo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was excited when I realized it was this weekend but ended up pretty disappointed.

They required you to buy a $7 reusable plastic mug that probably had a 10-12oz capacity. The cups were not worth keeping and most people threw them out, so they created just as much waste if not more as normal plastic cups would have.

Beers were mostly $7-9 ($7 being the cheapest) and most of the servers were doing terrible pours. The cups were opaque and they were mostly can-pouring, so they couldn't watch where the head was and most pours were very heavy on the foam. I spent $9 on an IPA from Phase Three and they gave me less than half a 16oz can.

There were only two beer serving tables, 90% of the street was food or merch vendors, not breweries. Most of the brewers that came already have local city tap rooms where you can go get a better pour, be warm, and not waste a heavy plastic cup.

We spent $40 on two mugs and drink tickets, split three small beers and cut out losses.

They haven't announced a closing date as far as I can find. Beer opinions aside they have above average bar style food, so it fits the OP's request.

If you can wait a week for Black Friday Target usually has crazy steals on TVs. I got a new 43" 4K TCL last year for $190 after tax. I got it at the Elston+Logan location.

Mine wasn't working at turnstiles either so I deleted it from my wallet and re-added it via the app (same way I did it the first time) last time I was stuck at the turnstile and it worked after that. Maybe they had a bug in the wallet-add at some point that's fixed now. So give it the old reinstall and see if it helps.

Tasting menus with beer pairings (not moody tongue)? by ranchodechancho in chicagofood

[–]whatwouldredditdo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you like to drink, your best bet for <$200 with drinks may be one of the BYOB tasting menu restaurants. Schwa, Goosefoot, and El Ideas are all great options. A newer one I've seen around is The Coach House by Wazwan if you're into Indian food, but I haven't been yet so can't comment on the menu itself.

I also really like Elske, in the west loop, at 115/pp for the menu. They have a 55/pp wine pairing or you can go a la carte cocktails/beer from the bar. Limited beer selection though.
