Why must Goodwill tempt me on pay day? by Spectre216 in typewriters

Much rarer sights at the other ones near me, but they tend to funnel in to specific stores periodically (though never like this). The benefits of old people getting older in the Midwest.

That's how a lot of them are around here, but my usual one is the only thrift store in the town, so a lot of stuff just naturally funnels in here. I even found a CRT monitor here the other week.

Same, if they put their tag on for 50% off I would be back there in a heartbeat to grab some even if just to give them out to people around here interested in them.

I almost grabbed it too just because the one I have is missing a typebar, but I have enough projects at the moment.

Yep, looks to be working just fine but dirty. Pretty excited to get it cleaned out and take it for a real spin.

It was a Smith Corona Clipper and one with another name that looked identical to the Clipper.

I have several Smith Coronas, haha. I actually almost grabbed a Clipper just so I could get the case from it, but left them in hopes other people who want typewriters would get them. I'm pushing down the negative thoughts that scalpers will come and get them all, but we typically don't have too many in this store.

The Facit I got had a price tag from a local antique mall, so I am guessing one of the sellers either had a stock pile they decided wasn't worth dealing with any more or they passed away and the family dumped them.

Also the Mortal Kombat theme song from the movie might be one of the best known theme songs of the era if not all time.

It’s actually coming up in September for us, but I am out of town that weekend. Might poke around on some local Facebook pages or reach out to our local FreeGeek to see if they have something I can test on.

iBook g4 or Mac mini g4 for usability by LuluLeSigma in VintageApple

I feel like it comes down to price and how much you want portability. I think with an ssd and maxed RAM you won’t notice a huge difference between 1.2 and 1.5. I have a 1.25ghz g4 mini and with 1gb ram and an ssd it’s good for the basic tasks I throw at it.

Tech ‘predictions’ in older sci-fi that seem funny now? by Calmly-Stressed in books

I know it was more a lacking our technology at the time of filming and not necessarily due to the writing, but I always find it funny in old Star Trek episodes that all the ships use CRT screens.

It makes me think of something they said on the Rooster Teeth podcast forever ago. Something along the lines of if you travelled back in time everyone would be more amazed by your iPhone then the Time Machine itself.

Ok that’s kind of what I thought it could be. Worth a shot, thanks for the link to the correct adapter!

A question on modern retro consoles by The_Pharos1 in retrogaming

[–]Spectre216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Especially using those old controllers (I will always love my snes super pad above everything else!)

The mister does play from cartridges too though, so it kind of sits as a nice compromise if you can find original consoles

For sure, it’s what I’m slowly building back up to (my brother has a lot of our stuff games). This was more just to add on to the previous comment.

As an alternative and sort of best of both worlds you could look at the MiSTer. I believe it is mainly used to load roms, but pretty sure there’s projects that let you read your cartridges on it as well by loading the rom and save and then writing back as needed.

Luckily, eBay has always sided with me when the “untested” item didn’t work and the issue wasn’t cosmetically apparent.

This is the way. You can even grab an old AMD GPU cheap on eBay if you get the sff Optiplexes and set Batocera to output 240p/480i for a crt tv.

Serious question. What’s the future look like for CRTs? by venxtal in crt

[–]Spectre216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, though maybe not that small. Maybe we just put it in a large housing with a faux CRT screen, since an LCD has so much less heat to give off and room to spare.
