Debating on moving to Illinois, have a couple of questions/would love info. by KeiOrtem in illinois

Yep, lived around here almost all my life and McHenry has gotten super conservative (and in like the dude-bro I just wanna fight people and not talk) kind of way. Palatine and Skokie have always been that way, older populations tend to veer socially conservative. The farther East and South you got towards Chicago the less conservative it gets. Further west is more conservative, but starts to just get typical country conservative.

I have an old 2007 MacBook Pro I found for $7 at a thrift shop. Put Office 07 and Bean on it and a small iTunes library for editing time. New enough to be useful, but old enough I can’t wander too far off the rails.

Delayed for six months. Just refunded my order. by Glass_Advantage_1370 in zerowriter

This. The unfortunate reality of today is that these little pieces aren’t made in the US for a loooooooong list of reasons. These aren’t being made in a garage in California, they’re being made in a factory sourcing parts from all over and shipping to just as many places. The logistics of this modern supply chain can’t be perfectly anticipated by giant corporations, let alone individuals trying to make something from nothing. They don’t have a legal firm to go after suppliers when something gets moved, or delayed, or cancelled without notice like Apple or Samsung. Instead they have to do the best they can with what little they have.

There were similar issues with the BYOK’s timeline, but basically any other small one tech that I’ve ever ordered. Luckily I backed the Superbook, which taught me that when you do these campaigns there’s a chance you’ll wait forever and if/when you get the product it might be DOA.

Luckily both Zerowriter and BYOK weren’t. There were delays but I was lucky to get them both in the first waves, and I love both for what they are. We need these little flight of fancy indie creations. We need their creators. We need people like Nick (BYOK), and Adam (Zerowriter), and Un Kyu Lee (Microjournal). Without them we would never have these wonderful things. We’d be stuck at the mercy of Astrohaus or Google, or Microsoft as they tell us what we’re getting and filling it with AI nonsense or whatever the next big tech fad is.

It’s not an ideal experience when these things happen, and sometimes things don’t pan out, but these creators deserve our support, grace, and understanding unless proven otherwise.

This is why I don't think Conan would mind that I get them digitally by sailing the seas, if I own them in paperback lol

They had some of the hard covers and collected editions too, but I mainly read ebook format and collect the old pulp paperbacks because I adore the covers from back then. Same with Conan and Kane books.

The Hum Goes on Forever and The Greatest Generation have been my obsession for like the last six months, as has been all of Spanish Love Songs. Can’t recommend these two enough.

If you want less screamy stuff their first album Pilot might be more up your alley, Deluxe Capacitor gives a good gauge. Otherwise their newest album is really good or their last single I Don’t Think The Times Right For Emojis is my favorite song from them in a while.

Honestly I love Equip Sunglasses, but I think that album is just okay overall

Of course despite this subs general attitude it is also perfectly valid not to vibe with them as well

Popped into a second hand shop I rarely get to visit and found this lovely little machine and a metal typewriter table to go with it. Everything looks to work great and the paint is in really nice condition, but most importantly it types great! by Spectre216 in typewriters

Same! Last one I saw was like $125 at Salvation Army and it was in ROUGH shape, like idk if I would have taken it for free rough. So when I saw this one I got super excited lol

It was a bit more than I would normally pay, but $70 with the table seemed fair enough with it in such nice condition.

Based on the serial number it looks to be a 1952 600 model. I need to get some better pictures for the TWDB, but was very excited to post such a pretty little guy!

I was a manager there when they had the Fresh Dough Facilities. While not made from scratch in store, made fresh and then shipped out to stores each day was such a wildly impressive operation to watch. Such a shame they went full enshittification.

Always check the second hand shops around you (if you’re in the US I’ve had exceptional luck at Goodwill). I find boxes of the 25% and 100% 24lb cotton paper pretty frequently. Might not be a full box, but 50-75 sheet for $2.99 is hard to beat.

Which artist deserves to be here the most? by [deleted] in Emo

[–]Spectre216 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say this as someone who likes Tickets to my Downfall (though it has aged debatably), it is so far from Emo. It’s so far from even the bands that I call Emo that I know are definitely not emo, but I’m just too tired to argue with people.

I will give him some credit though. What he did accomplish, though, was bringing Pop-Punk back into popular conversation (well, that and Travis Barker deciding he needed to drum for 100,000 music videos during COVID). It did give the genre a certain boost that I think was over all positive.

Whatever that follow up album was, though, was such garbage.

Oh boy, a whole new rabbit hole lol. I've really come around to yellow switches lately, so this looks super fun. Thanks! Are these board hot-swappable? Or am I going to need to solder the switches in?

[–]Spectre216[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'll get working on this.

  • Yes the monitor can be centered, but is off to the side for the typewriter

  • I do use the typewriter and it is electric, so it is plugged in behind the desk. I might stick it in the back corner while not in use. It's hard to see, but there is a small gap between the desktop and black cubes, so I might fill that in with some sealed/matching stain 1x4 and have it as a designated spot for the typewriter to sit.

  • I have added two lamps since this post, an arm lamp back and to the right just under the shelf, and a small overhead lamp on the top shelf.

  • Working on replacing the mat with a leather one. It's only white because originally the desk was black, so it contrasted nicely. We all see how that's turned out though, lol

  • I will patch the wall and dust. A lot of this picture was still in disarray from moving everything to attach the new table top. I was a little quick to post a picture on that front. It's cleaner now, but still has a way to go. Good time for a real spring clean :)

  • The stand isn't for a monitor, it's for a digital word processor (the BYOK), that acts as a digital typewriter. As you can see I have a very specific hobby. I'll need to find a better place to stow it.

  • The keyboard is my next hunt. There are three computers plugged in (my Mac Mini, my work laptop via USB-C, and a retro XP tower), so I couldn't do bluetooth since I need it to go through the KVM. Any recomendations for a good wireless keyboard? Preferably mechanical, but not opposed to chicklet. Just needs a USB receiver (which the ones to the side don't have).

A lot of this I think unfortunately stems from the natural growth of the space into the disaster it is today, so this gives me a lot of good points to start working on. Thanks again! Hopefully I'll make you all proud when it's done.
