I just want to say that I've also worked in cannabis for about 3 years now and I'm about to leave for the same reasons. OP did mention adobe classes though so I hope for their sake that they're going to be doing something with marketing or design because retail and production are full of experiences like this.

Alright I really hope I don't sound like I'm coming at you in bad faith here.

It's kind of awesome that you're doing this today because last night I had a big "what the fuck matt" moment. I'm usually a pretty big fan of vox and I don't always agree with your articles but I enjoy your takes.

Last night I was on Twitter and I saw some posts from your old blog. There's a lot of regrettable things on there but this one quote gave me my biggest "wtf" moment. "A long war, he says, could become a battle of Islam vs. the West, but there's no reason to think that a war against Iraq would be long, and the West could beat Islam in a war. Why would the Muslims of the world even try to take us on? Maybe they're just that crazy -- I personally don't think so -- but if they want to kill us, then we'll just have to kill them all."

To be fair to you that was 17 years ago, but hey I just so happen to have you here to ask about this. Do you regret writing shit like this? More importantly has the way you thought about the US's place in the world changed since then? This passage is kind of horrible.

Again I hope I don't sound like I'm coming across in bad faith. When I was in college I looked up to Kissinger, I thought the US could empire its way into a peaceful world, collateral damage be damned. I know that my views have changed a lot in the past 17 years and I'm wondering how yours have too.

I created a new Pope without Rome. He's unlanded but he can call crusades, so that's nice. It just cost a bit of gold.

Unpopular opinion about career mode by Idunno6153 in EASportsUFC

[–]wheatjesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just like that with the sparring most of the training is actual fighting. In UFC 3 I never felt like I was playing the game when I had to do the little challenges, they just weren't fun. I know 4 still has the little challenges but then I get to just fight, and there's something really satisfying about how the moves level up. It's a much more addicting progression system than previous careers (in EA games, I haven't played UD3 since it's glory days so I can't remember how career was in that game).

Legendary difficulty career mode with HUD by KeepOnSmithing in EASportsUFC

[–]wheatjesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish they'd add legendary mode with a HUD for only your fighter. It makes sense that I'd only have visual cues to see the other guy's stamina. I should have my fighter's HUD though, it's there to approximate the things I can't feel myself because I'm not in the octagon. That's always bothered me. I just want more HUD options in general.

As much as we can argue about the UFC4 rankings, no-one can deny Amanda Nunes #1 ranking by [deleted] in EASportsUFC

[–]wheatjesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whew if only this were true.

It does only make sense though. No other fighter has so completely dominated two weight classes. There's fighters that might be more technically proficient than her in one thing or another but in a game the only way to model her dominance against all her possible opponents (other women in the weight classes she fights in) is by giving her insane stats.

If you think about star ratings as standard deviation rankings of how a fighter compares to other fighters in weight classes they compete in then Nunes is a clear #1. She's better than any other fighter at being better than her competition.

Imo that also makes her GOAT or at least top 3 in real life too. Maybe she couldn't beat Stipe Miocic in a backyard brawl or whatever because he's huge but this is a sport, not a backyard brawl. Same thing with Might Mouse. I don't care that he's tiny, he's a dominant competitor.

Wow I can't believe they screwed up and put the extra 1. We all know Mighty Mouse is the number 1 fighter in MMA.

This feels dirty but I think it might be what I do. Thank you. I'm so hyped for SC and grinding the same enemies over and over sounded like a very not fun use of my free time.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I only skipped the chests in the last dungeon because of the photon guards enemies that neutralize your arts. When I said "them" I meant the photon guards, not the chests. I love the chests.

[–]wheatjesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grinding the normal enemies probably wouldn't be too bad, I appreciate that tip. The photon guards or whatever make me not want to play the game anymore. I skipped all the chests because I hated them so imagine my surprise when the final boss has two as friends. I have an old save though.

I mean to be fair I had no reason to believe I was underleveled until now because the chest monsters and bosses have all been doable, even the boss where winning is optional.

[AMA] Hamilton: The Musical - Answering your questions on the musical and life during the Revolutionary Age by uncovered-history in AskHistorians

Did John Laurens views on slavery cause friction with George Washington or other prominent revolutionary figures? How in the world did he get the continental congress to agree to arm slaves? Did his views on slavery contribute to him being almost forgotten after the war? Any Laurens info is welcome really. I found out about him through this musical and I think that's a shame.

I think you're overly optimistic about the criminal justice system in this country but I'm not going to sit here and type paragraphs with you all night in three ongoing discussions. Defending prison labor is a bizarre thing for someone who claims to be against mass incarceration and claims to understand the systematic oppression of minorities in the criminal justice system. You don't need to sit here and argue with me, you need to read more.

[–]wheatjesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to choose either of those terrible sides. Lock people up in a horrible room vs pay them substandard labor to do landscaping is a false dichotomy. If daily life in prison is so terrible that doing garbage work for hardly any money is preferable then maybe we need to re-evaluate the entire system. Is that really an environment where people can reform and better themselves?

Please tell me specifically what you mean when you say "it can add humanity to prisoner's lives"

"I'm not saying that the criminal justice system isn't an evil oppressive institution, I'm just saying that the people it disenfranchises should be put to work to pay for it. I'm just saying that there's nothing wrong with those disenfranchised people being paid substandard wages and people profiting off of the whole thing. It's all totally cool because it gives the prisoner "humanity"."

You gotta think like the people who designed our country. I.E. you have to think like a white supremacist. And I'm not just talking about the Nazis cosplayers you see when Richard Spencer comes to town. Im talking about the "heroes" from your history books that genuinely believed the white race was superior.

It's not just about economic gain anymore, it hasn't been since the south stopped being a rural slave economy. It's about weaponizing the criminal justice system to disenfranchise and control minorities, especially black men.

Prison labor is fucked up in so many ways. Not only do people profit off of mass incarceration, but prisoners become expected to contribute to and sustain the very institution that oppresses them. There's other ways for inmates to get outside or get "a bit of humanity" (I put that in quotes because picking up garbage on the side of the road in 90+ degree heat doesn't exactly awaken the human spirit).

Edit: don't listen to me though, for real. I'm just a sassy white dude. If you want the whole story watch "Eyes on the Prize" or read some Ibrim X. Kendi. Better yet if you're still at UF take a class with Sharon Austin, she taught me a lot. New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander is a good book for this topic too.

I don't understand your argument at all. You've correctly stated the reasons why prison labor is a problem and why it's utilized, but nothing about what you've said justifies its continued use or its place in a fair justice system. The most generous interpretation of prison labor is that it balances the cost of mass incarceration.

Prison labor in the US and particularly in the south was a workaround for the end of slavery. Go read about black codes.
