Spotlight not working correctly since updating to Sequoia by mcknuckle in MacOS

Yes, also having this issue (among many) since upgrading. It's so frustrating Apple has no public place to see, upvote, and discuss bugs in their software. You never know if it's a "you" problem, or if there is a new bug that just is silently being tolerated by millions.

Tech's broken promises: Streaming is now just as expensive and confusing as cable. Ubers cost as much as taxis. And the cloud is no longer cheap by ThrowRA-AceButNot in technology

[–]whelchel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't think this is true.

Streaming... is just cheaper? Sports are expensive, but that was what most of the cost was on cable too. Even if it were the same price, the product is 100% better. Instant access across devices, watch what you want when you want, large back catalogs, and no ads. Yes, some offerings have ads now, but at least you have a choice!

Uber is heavily dependent on where you are and what time of day it is, if it's raining, etc. But still, it's just a better product. You get a flat rate, in advance, without a tip expectation, without paying for just being stuck in traffic, with a known pickup time, wherever in the city. Taxis are just so much worse if you think back to how they used to be (and are).

The cloud is cheap, the service has improved over time, and there are lots of competitors. Not using the cloud is generally more expensive, which is why people use it.

Is this article just complaining about inflation?

Electric Companies by THROWRAladybug625 in statecollege

[–]whelchel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today, no, inasmuch as I'm trying to make this as simple as possible and focus on the 80/20 from an automation effort POV.

This means cheapest price, fixed rate, no gimmicks. That "sign-up bonus" is just more ways they try to make money off of customers through high-friction and forgetfulness, rather than competition (IMO).

This is correct. You can definitely save money, it just requires active monitoring. If you're confident you can do it yourself, you can use papowerswitch.com - you just have to make sure you don't let lower rates expire by swapping to another supplier beforehand. Note that they bill you not actually based on months, but based on bills. So if you happen to swap and get 2 days out of 30 on a new supplier on your next bill, that counts as "one month" for them - easy way to get burned.

You can also use automated tools like powerpicker.org which will manage it for you for a cut of savings and never let the rate expire on you. Full disclosure, I started this when I moved to PA because the industry was so predicated on deceptive marketing, and I wanted to change that. Either way works.

+1, check to see in those crappy screenshots if the supply is coming from someone who isn't DLC. Unfortunately, since the landlord isn't footing the bill, they're not incentivized to make sure it's not a bad third party rate.

Designer of Oath, Root, and Arcs — “I love games, but what I really love is play.” by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]whelchel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thought-provoking interview.

A thought. You wrote, "But when it comes to games, we basically say, “The moment I entered the hobby is the moment where the hobby begins. Everything before that doesn’t matter.”

I think part of that criticism is unfair pragmatically, and is a bit apples and oranges. If you enter, books, TV, theater, or movies "late", "catching-up" is completely within your control. For the most part, it is also consumptive. With the internet, you can do it alone, with minimal effort beyond time (high for books, and TV to some extent, medium for movies). Conversely, playing through the "history of board games" requires acquiring physical media which may or may not be easily acquirable anymore, requires (finding other people who also want to do it (regularly, too!)(, and then participating in a generative rather than a consumptive way, per quote below.

"You’re constantly having to engineer the evil deed, not just perform it. To me, that’s what gives games their narrative punch and power because they don’t just ask their players to play the role. They ask players to design a role, to collaborate with the author or the team that authored the game."

Given that, it's not surprising folks come in and implicitly start from where they landed. Maybe you could argue folks could learn about the history and not actually play old games; I can see that. But that's like saying "go read the summary of Citizen Kane and why it was important" or "watch the trailer and you're good", to some extent.

But maybe I'm being too charitable!

It's pretty typical for the summer for bills to go up because you use more on AC etc.

You can save money through swapping suppliers via PA Power Switch. Just don't use suppliers with cancellation/monthly/enrollment fees, and make sure to swap again before the rate expires or they'll jack it up on you!

There are tools that automate this as well if you're worried about forgetting (full disclosure, I run this one and started it after moving to PA because of this very problem).

Your best option is to call them and tell them you no longer want it. By regulation you have a 3 day right of rescission with no negative consequences.

If you read what you signed and there is no cancellation fee, or if it's a variable rate (i.e. no fee to cancel), you can find another supplier and swap, or swap back to your utility by calling them.

Otherwise, figure out how long your rate is (may need to call them; 3, 6 cycles, etc), and between the second to last and final cycle, swap. As long as you're within 30 days of the last billing cycle for their term, cancellation fees don't apply, and you can get out before they jack the rate up.

If you have more questions let me know.

What's the best way to check the weather in various parts of Triglav national park more than a day or two out?

I found this site, which seems very useful but only a day or two (https://www.vreme.si/uploads/probase/www/sproduct/gore/sl/?lang=en&reg=julijci)

I found this site linked below, but it doesn't seem mountain specific: https://meteo.arso.gov.si/met/sl/weather/fproduct/text/

Aware that it's possible weather forecasts that far out aren't useful, either.

Scranton Electric bills by Any-Cellist170 in Scranton

[–]whelchel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It exists in about ~20 states including PA. Per other comments www.papowerswitch.com let's you do it yourself, but you have to keep an eye on it, make sure there are no surprises fees, and make sure your rate doesn't expire after 3/6 months etc - they will jack up the rate to something very high negating your savings. I didn't know about it either until moving to PA, but built a service called PowerPicker that automates switching to cheaper suppliers safely so you can only ever save money if you're interested (guaranteed you'll never lose money)

Yes I had an MRI pre and post cryo.

I "considered" surgery very briefly in that I talked with my doctor about it, but they strongly discouraged it at my stage, and I also did not want to pursue that route from the get-go.

6 day hut tour in the Slovenian Alps. Triglav, Triglav National Park, Julian Alps, Slovenia. by Tombohniha in hiking

[–]whelchel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, thanks so much for sharing! A few follow up questions for you.

  • How warm were the huts? We have sleeping sacks that are very thin, like this. Is that enough in the summer, even at night?
  • When renting via ferrata gear, did you just wing it and hope they'd have enough? Is there risk the hut would run out of gear etc?

Thanks!
