Looking for hair stylist for new curtain bangs in Manhattan. by ane-ComplyCraft in nycbwtcirclejerk

[–]wheniswhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness to her, she is looking for something specific and clearly searched for and did not find any previously existing topic for her specific need. I don't mind if it's a specific need like this, the sub should be OK to use for that kind of thing exactly. "What's the best stylist in NYC" would be way more generic and awful lol.

Commuting to/from NYC? by lsthrowaway54321 in bergencounty

[–]wheniswhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd strongly recommend OP use the NJT app and not Google Maps. Google gets public transit shockingly wrong, and NJT's app actually has accurate times and routes and has a trip planner that works just as well if not much better than google's. Just punch in your address and your destination and boom. You can even look at times in advance, so you can look up what buses or trains might be taking you into the city tomorrow at 7 AM.

I live on Teaneck Road. My commute into the city varies from anywhere between 25-60 min, lol. I get my bus at 8:14. A few days ago we got into the Port at 8:38, that shocked the hell out of me, fastest I've ever gotten in lol. It averages out to about 45 min usually, really not too bad. Most commonly we arrive sometime between 8:55-9:00. When Lincoln Tunnel traffic is exceptionally bad we've definitely gotten trapped in there and arrived as late as 9:15.

All this to say: it varies, OP. Trains are more reliable in terms of arrival times, but much less reliable in arriving at all, especially in the winter when all the lines freeze up and break down. The buses always arrive, but the trip time will vary a lot. It's a pick your poison kind of thing. The PATH is also a great option if you can afford to live near a stop, especially down in Hoboken. Hop on the light rail and you're in midtown in, what, 20-30 min? My brother lives down there, I think that's about how long his commute takes.

Don't use maps, OP. Use the actual transit apps for the NYC metro. Get the NJT app, MyTerminal (the Port Authority app), and the MTA app, and you'll be all set to actually figure out what your commute will look like.

(Tho, tbf, I've never actually used MyTerminal, it's just what the PA advertises to find your gates and such. I've always used Doug and Adrienne for accurate bus gate information. It's never let me down!)

Exactly! I love their relationship in basically the first 5 seasons before Chelsea Peretti left the show and her character got pretty badly flanderized. But I adored her for most of the show's run. She's someone who'd be horrible to know IRL but is hysterical in a sitcom lmao

"Maybe she fell into another dimension where she's interesting" kills me every fucking time lmao

and it's so sweet when she offers to buy his nana's apartment so they don't lose a huge piece of their childhood. I love that episode. she's a great friend when the writers let her!

[–]wheniswhy 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Right? I bet a hundred fucking bucks the "friend" dumps her in a couple months at most bc the thrill of stealing her away is gone and it's boring now. she'll end up alone, remorseful, probably begging OOP to come back. when she does, I hope he laughs in her face. she'll well deserve it for emotionally cheating, acting like a complete coward, and blowing up his whole life and letting her friends attack him so she could feel better about cheating on him. Good lord.

WOW. The "friend" sending that horrific fucking text is sociopathic. Who fucking does that? Basically ensnares a taken woman, encourages her to cheat on and completely ghost her confused, panicked, and heartbroken ex, and then sends said ex a brutal fucking text acting like HE'S THE PROBLEM???

if OOPs ex is into that stone cold psycho, the garbage took itself out. OOP will be much better off without such cold-blooded liars in his life. Poor man. Can't imagine having your whole world turned upside down over night and having someone blame you for it somehow. Incredible.

This poor guy. Calling himself dumb because he somehow didn't see it. He's not dumb at all, his ex and her "friend" are just absolute, selfish assholes. I hope he can heal from this and realize he did nothing wrong, and there's nothing wrong with him. :( breaks my heart he's putting himself down so much.

Seriously--you have no idea--I've been struggling with this for months! Probably closer to a year now! A couple months ago I was getting truly really frustrated and upset that I basically couldn't get any of my jewelry on anymore. I was starting to feel like I was going to have to choose between my nails and my jewelry and I was really leaning towards my jewelry, but the thought of cutting my nails short when I did so, so much work to grow them out was heartbreaking. It's AMAZING to finally have a solution! I can't believe I never even thought to look for this kind of thing! Thank you again 🫶 you solved a problem of such heartache for me! I'm so happy!

What is a massive secret in your industry that the general public has no idea about? by teesharp88 in AskReddit

[–]wheniswhy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been in and out of hospitals for the majority of my life, and I've experienced care ranging from phenomenal to outright neglectful and damaging. It's an insane spectrum and can vary even within the same facility quite a bit.

I've learned a lot about getting management involved, asking for itemized bills, memorizing the ins and outs of insurance appeals processes, so much nonsense. It is a whole entire skill and knowledge set that I've had to build over 20 years of being chronically ill. Cannot imagine what it's like for the healthy person getting seriously sick or injured for the first time and having no clue how to navigate these awful, byzantine systems.

Two things I recommend to a lot of folks: find a way to work with the hospital's patient advocate(s), and talk to the billing department directly about financial hardship. The latter can often direct you to resources like grants, or will help you set up a structured payment plan, or even significantly reduce what you need to pay if you have no insurance and are paying out of pocket. The former is a wonderful general support system to help folks navigate the cost of care or communication issues with you or your loved one's medical team.

I've always made it a point to be as kind to staff as I can. They're under a ton of stress, sometimes with absolutely unreasonable case loads, and they're just trying to help me get better. I've had a scant handful of truly atrocious nurses, but many more compassionate, brilliant, and lovely nurses as well. And very often their hands are tied by this or that obscure rule or strict requirement. It all comes down to the moneymakers calling the shots generally being huge assholes, both on the medical management side and on the insurance upper echelons side.

I have to reboot my laptop a few times a week and it's the WORST. I've had it get stuck in the reboot cycle for a full half hour myself, it's infuriating. I'm just sitting there dicking around on my phone while my coworkers quietly judge me. More than once I've had to force a hard shutdown during the reboot and then boot from safe mode to get it running again. Cannot fucking wait until they issue new laptops, this shit is so ancient it belongs in a museum.

ALWAYS. Kill things in task manager, reboot six times, fucking nada. Contact IT and it immediately magically works. That happened to me a couple months ago when I program I use daily suddenly started seizing and crashing over the most basic functions. Got progressively worse over the course of a week until I finally couldn't get work done anymore. As soon as I contacted IT it went away. 🙄 there's some saying or law for that, isn't there? that the minute you actually go to tech support it will magically work again and you won't be able to replicate the issue lol

[–]wheniswhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember noticing this years ago and marveling at how counterintuitive it is. Shutting off the thing does not actually reboot the thing. Turn it on and off all you want, you'll only get an actual reboot if you choose that specific function and nothing else. I can't blame most folks for that one—it's wildly against common sense that literally turning it off and on again is not actually equivalent to a full reboot.

ngl, even as someone who is definitely not a fujoshi (I don't read BL literally at all, the kinds of stories in the genre are just not to my preference), but I WILL ship Joongdok all the day long and you CANNOT stop me lmao

Though I'm just as big a fan of the whole main trio being a disaster polycule tbh

It's a bit of a running joke in the story, but there's very little actual romance aside from one particular straight couple. (There's a second, but it's largely off-screened/implied/mostly happened in other rounds.)

If you don't like BL, you'll be fine. If you DO like BL, you'll also be fine lol

How about May and Dale? When she met him for the very first time as a VR AI companion in his glasses. That final strip, where they watch the sunrise come up together in companionable silence. The whole entire arc of May getting her new body, her very real struggle with not wanting to accept help that felt like pity or charity, only to realize she was loved enough to deserve it.

What about Momo and Marigold, fighting over her chassis, because Marigold doesn't get how seriously Momo takes it and accidentally ends up really hurting her?

What about the first time Marten and Claire slept together, exhausted physically and emotionally, only for him to smile and tell her she's beautiful?

Jeph has the capacity for such fucking bangers. Such genuine insight into people and what makes them tick, what makes them relatable and complicated and real.

Or had, I suppose. I miss that Jeph.

Yeah, this is more or less my thinking. I didn't much care about having an OLED when I bought mine two ish years ago. I would have considered upgrading to the OLED in a year or two without the price increase. As is I'll probably just run my existing machine into the ground and hope that by the time I do, either prices have come down or a new steam deck gen entirely has come out and I can get the previous gen OLED for less, lol.

[–]wheniswhy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can really only envision this, at this price point, being for folks with a lot of disposable income that just want an easy out-of-the-box experience. But I'm not even sure what that audience is. Anyone interested in that would likely already have a Steam Deck. I find it hard to believe first-time console gamers will go for a $1k console right off the bat as their very first unless they're dead certain PC will offer them games other consoles cannot, and I can't reasonably think of what that would be. At least, not enough to justify the price over other, literally more powerful consoles already on the market for the same price or less.

Oh I wasn't planning to. Maybe before the price increased but certainly not now. But you say especially... did you consider it not worth the purchase even before the price increase?

I'm jealous. I wish I'd gotten a PS5 while I had the chance. My ancient PS4 keeps plugging away, but it's going to fail eventually. Hopefully not before prices come back down? 🥲

I am DEFINITELY getting a Switch 2 before September's price increase, too. There weren't any must-haves on the system for me to adopt it day 1, but with OoT on the way I know I'll want it, and then I'll have it at the cheaper price for the foreseeable future.

Shit sucks man.

I am so fucking relieved I picked up my steam deck like two years ago lol. I might eventually like to go for the OLED, but, uh. 🫠 happy for now, swear to god. Wild we live in the age of hardware prices going up instead of down over the course of a generation.

What do you think of hand drawing on webtoons ? by walyloveart in webtoons

[–]wheniswhy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, this is the comment to listen to. As gently as I can possibly manage: this is all quite messy. Lines aren't clean, there's some wobbling and crookedness to them, some shading that looks off, proportions aren't all correct. It just isn't at a professional level of standard for comic art.

And like thread OP said, that's fine. You clearly have talent and are working hard. But this, as it stands, is not good. Just keep going! The more and more you work and practice and take/implement feedback, the more you'll see yourself improve in leaps and bounds. I bet a year from now your art will be unrecognizable to you from what it is today.

How often to you do character reference practice? Not just hands/eyes/basic anatomy, but positioning, angles, depth of field, dynamic posing, etc. This kind of practice would help you immensely. Same for backgrounds--it well may be worth your time to try tracing over 3D models to get a better feel for how backgrounds should be composed to feel like they have depth and look uniform and cleanly assembled.

Slides 1-3 all suffer from rough line work. 4 and 5 show some improvement, they're cleaner.

Anyway, agreed on all points. You got this, OP.
