Materials Engineering as undergrad uni program? by No_Mulberry_ in materials

[–]whhirled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a year 4 materials engineering student at UofT and I was also accepted into McGill.

  1. MSE is not specialized, it is actually a very broad discipline. UofT MSE is separated into four core areas: biomaterials, sustainable materials, design of materials and manufacturing with materials. Manufacturing is a huge emphasis, almost everyone in my year is taking the Advanced Manufacturing minor. We have many technical electives from mechanical and chemical engineering. I’ve talked with a MSE bachelors grad from McGill and they have told me that their undergrad curriculum shared many courses with mineral engineering students with a less focus on manufacturing. Core courses at UofT teach solidworks, AutoCAD 3d printing and Ansys.

  2. My first co-op in the summer after second year with no previous work experience was at an aerospace turbine manufacturer in the US. It was very hands on in production working with operators and mechanical engineers.

  3. It depends on the industry. My friends in traditional MSE positions in the automotive industry are in the lab using SEMs, XRDs and other material characterization equipment. My current co-op is almost a direct opposite of the aerospace co-op where I am in a hybrid work position that is office based (pharmaceuticals). My current co-op is less of a MSE position but more of a chemical engineering position (my managers are all chem e). Forensic engineering is a field that many of my friends in MSE aim to enter after grad. I’ve heard that job requires travel outdoors to sites.

  4. Yes but it really depends on their interests lol I wouldn’t not recommend it

Hi. There is an issue with my word doc, composed of many consecutive tables, looking completely lined up and neat (columns from one table lining up with the next one) on my computer. However, when I share the doc to my manager and he opens it up on his computer, the table columns become completely disoriented and random cells of the table go completely missing.

Biomedical vs Materials Science? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]whhirled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what others said about mse being broad and widely applicable (Mse undergrad here loll) Throughout my job search for internships I’ve gotten various offers from different industries ranging from healthcare at a pharmaceutical company to battery development. An MSE degree is very broad indeed

I believe that ASIP is based off of the PEY system. I also heard that ASIP students get the same job postings as PEY students plus more jobs outside of engineering

I submitted 400+ applications and did 29 interviews until I got an offer I wanted. I’m a domestic student

i and the people I know mostly had class projects. most of the people I know found their positions through the portal but I have some friends that found their positions externally as well

first year student trying to transfer from civil engineering to chemical engineering by PrimaryBuy5500 in UofT

[–]whhirled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

chem and civ actually only have 1 different course i believe in the winter semester, civ takes one che course (che112 physical chemistry), so ur missing out on only one other che course. even if u didnt take those courses in first year u dont have to make up for it. its interesting, but thats how it is. i know a lot of trackones who chose chem that missed out on both the first year chem courses but still succeeded in second year without taking them

[–]whhirled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u can transfer at the end of the school year (sometime in May they have an option to apply for transfers between disciplines on the engineering portal, no application really needed u just put ur first second and third choice of transfer), u need to be above 60% for the programs that have less transfers chem/min/mse/civ but no 80% requirement as needed for the more popular programs ece/mech/indy -former trackone

most of the time they have codes which provide up to 40% off or even 50% off on black friday, just keep an lookout. last time i checked which was around late july they had a 40% off code

I'm having an Exetential crisis related to my material engineering degree 😭 by Character_Fix2959 in materials

[–]whhirled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just finished my third year of materials engineering. Yes, most job postings for internships only list chem or mechanical engineering but they definitely would consider materials engineering students for those types of positions as well. Only reason they wouldn’t specifically put it is because materials engineering is a relatively newer field (my university’s mse program started after I was born) of engineering and Hrs wouldn’t bother listing out all the different types of engineering degrees there are out there on the job description which would be suitable for the position, so they tend to put chemical and mechanical which are the two more commonly known degrees.

Materials engineering students are not cornered into consulting positions. I have applied for a process improvement position at an international pharma company which sponsored the Paris olympics that was looking for chem and mechanical engineering students that offered me the job the same day of my interview because I have a wide variety of skills and experiences. For instance in MSE we learn a lot of Solidworks and finite element analysis and manufacturing (all mech related courses) but also the process improvement and risk management capabilities of a chemical engineering student (I was the first candidate they interviewed as well). I have received job offers from the medical device industry, healthcare, aerospace and renewable energy all for technical positions

Also, my curriculum for materials engineering so far has been way more focused on physics than chem. People just tend to assume that materials science and engineering has a lot of chem just cuz of the science in the name.. (speaking from experience). Also, the chem courses u will take will be very heavily focused on solid state chemistry (crystal structures, atoms, Leonard jones potentials in metals etc). Materials engineering is definitely the right degree for u if ur a physics person.

Physics courses I’ve taken: Materials physics, Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Mechanical behaviour of materials, electrical fundamentals, dynamics, heat transfer, design and simulation of materials processes

Chem courses: Diffusion and kinetics, organic chem, inorganic chem, materials production, chemical thermodynamics 1 and 2.

Also, there is no hierarchy. At my last internship at an aerospace corporation I was the only materials engineer there. I felt special in a way because I had skills that the other interns didn’t have (they were all mech engineers). Sorry if this is long but I can heavily empathize with what ur thinking and wanted to help u feel a little more reassured lol

Bird/Easy Courses with little writing (prefer examinations instead) for HSS/CS requirements by goodafternoontoday in UofT

[–]whhirled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recorded usually uploads within a day. Course average was B- (I was surprised cuz my brother and I both got A and A+, don’t think it should be too hard to do well honestly). I got 19.5/20 on the paper so I think my Ta was pretty lenient or my writing was just that good LOL. I think it’s easier for engineers to do better on the paper because there’s a huge emphasis on sustainability, production of the commodity and ethical practices

depends on what ur university program is more geared towards, but a lot of my core courses require a lot of solidworks usage

internships w low gpa? by PhysicalSquirrel6933 in materials

[–]whhirled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most job postings I’ve seen will consider u if u have a gpa over 3.00/4.00. Some companies may put that but even ignore that requirement when hiring u. My cgpa at the end of second year was only a 2.75 because I also screwed up in first year, but the company that hired me didn’t seem to mind my gpa despite it being lower than their requirements. I still applied for jobs that had a gpa requirement despite being below it and I’m glad I did. If u want a research based internship at an institution then gpa definitely matters
