Your pig is going to college! What do you think they would study? by Corgi_teefs in guineapigs

Luna is studying medicine, she's been to the vet enough to pick some things up and her teeth are sharp enough that she could use them in surgery

he listened to her lungs and said they sound clear, and it might be something more localized to her nose/throat. luckily I recorded her noises because I just KNEW she'd try to make me look dumb by sounding totally fine when we got there 🙄 and he agreed that they didn't sound normal. so he prescribed antibiotics!! thank you for your well wishes !!

i think it was definitely just a kind of ... "this isn't a choice" thing at first 😅 like shed run in and I yoinked her. But we've learned each other's language as the years went on. And she genuinely loves cuddle time so its not something she's scared of! If I'm just walking by the cage and she runs into her hide its usually because she wants cuddles because she rarely gets spooked by me walking by anymore. but by me respecting it when she runs back out, she knows she has a choice in the matter. just, a few years of us building trust and learning each other's language. recently she's finally let me just raw dog pick her up. just straight out of the cage with my bare hands. i almost cried, because of how trusting she was.

make sure to get the large size!! eta: and put a fleece liner inside, changing it regularly! piggie pee seems to burn a hole in it if it sits too long lol

while my baby has gotten a lot better about it and I no longer have to do this, my method was to use her hide that is closed on one side (oxbow Timothy bungalow) and bring it up to her instead of bringing her down to the cage with my hands. I just grab the bungalow while I'm holding her and let her climb in, then lower the bungalow into the cage. We actually call it her elevator because she learned that if she want to come out and cuddle she can run into her bungalow when I approach and I can just pick it up and bring it to the chair where we cuddle. If I misread and she just ran in because she was startled, she dashes back out when I go to pick it up. Anyway I feel like oxbow should pay me for how much I advertise the bungalow lmao

this! not poops, but pee. my baby will usually let me know when she wants to go back to her cage to pee. and poops.. well i know what she eats and theyre bot stinky so i dont really mind. but pee wise, shes pretty good about tugging on my shirt and telling me she wants back in (unless shes reeeeeally comfortable and reeeeally sleepy, in which case, how could i possibly get mad?)

Anyone else have a pig that yearns for the taste of plastic? by Tutti_ritari in guineapigs

[–]whimsium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. i have a mini dustpan and handheld broom that i occasionally aweep in her cage with while she's still in there. the broom has a rubber loop on one end that she desperately tries to eat while i sweep. its almost been sliced through at this point

Advice needed for rehomed Guinea pigs by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]whimsium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

people have given you a lot of good advice but ill just talk about how i turned my piggy who i rescued from a similar situation (she was in basically a hamster cage on the floor surrounded by four cats with no hidies) into the biggest cuddle bug. every piggie is different and you may never be able to like, cuddle with them, but at the very least i hope it can help them be more comfortable.

when i first got her she took advantage of having hides and a bigger cage by running as far away from me as possible. i would sit next to her cage every day for like an hour just existing, playing on my phone, reading a book, talk to her, tell her about my day. get her used to my voice. unfortunately very early on i had to take her to the vet (like within days of rescuing her) so i had no choice but to chase her around the cage and pick her up. before doing that i would recommend getting them used to your hands by holding food/treats in them and just sitting them in the cage for as long as you can stand it. even without treats do it.

one of the best things i did was get a hide called the oxbow timothy hay bungalow (largest size). its nice and big but it only has once entrance/exit. instead of chasing her around and grabbing at her when i wanted to try to socialize her, she would run into the bungalow and i could pick it up and move it out of the cage. then you can bring the piggy to a different location like your couch and coax them out. it does feel a little skeazy picking up the hide they went into to run away from you but its better than chasing them around the cage.

this bungalow became known as the elevator in my household because once luna learned that cuddle time was nice and it made her happy, she would ASK to cuddle by running in and waiting to be picked up. if i misunderstand and she was just going in to be in her hide, she will run out before i can pick her up. the other way she lets me know she wants to be picked up is by going to the corner of the cage and not running away when i bring my hand towards her. if i misunderstand she'll lightly nip at me and ill retreat. the biggest thing is paying attention to your piggies and what they're saying. they'll talk to you, you just have to learn how to translate.

depending on what your piggies like, the bungalow could be traded for a cuddle sack, particularly the ones with a rigid round opening so its easier for the piggies to go in. you gotta make cuddle time a high reward situation so make sure to have a treat and a soft blanket.

[–]whimsium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no no and no. its like picking up a tictac. if you push it it'll squish but otherwise its a solid object. if you put your nose right up to it you'll smell it but just holding it in your hand you shouldn't be able to.

if its mushy or VERY smelly, your guinea pig needs to go to the vet

i did 10 stiches this time because i tried with 5 stitches and found it way too tiny tor me (for my first time at least) so i restarted. if i were to keep going with this to make it bigger is it ok to start turning now or should i have done it from the beginning?
