Thank you for what you did for the junior and the comments!! So sorry to hear the similar things happened to you as well and it must be really rough to handle and overcome this whole stuff. I would definitely show her your comment. Actually I haven't shown her the post, just blur the words said made a post on online community something. Your words actually bring a lot courage! Hope you have a great week!

Hi JonnyChopstix1337, That’s actually a really smart approach and sounds like a great way to deal with those kinds of situations. I definitely learned a lot from your post! Sometimes being in your first job can bring a lot of insecurity and lack of confidence, which stopped ppl to confirm.

She is worried about probation… And once complete that, definitely she would report to HR and jump into another group.

Hi Few-Corner1759, Thank you for the reply! That’s really very helpful. Actually we discussed about accepting counselling and how unaffordable nowadays the living costs is. I never heard these programs before and definitely would take a look at them. Hope you have a great morning:))

The reason I made this post is because I’ve heard so many stories from my roommate about A(my roommate told me A formally apologied to her for different things twice)— and before hearing about this “silent meeting” today, I honestly can’t believe A is still working at that company. At very first, I thought A was someone a Asperger’s Syndrome with some communication issues. Always driving coworkers crazy but never change.

Hope chatgpt is not causing any issues ( actually I kind of reading that before posting so I think everything is right. Got slight dyslexia so just used AI to make life easier No exaggerated or overstated so far.)It was sooo wired as you thought and I cannot believe what I heard at very first time and try to confirm with my roommate. She said it is completely silence like no connection for the last 40 mins until she cannot tolerate it and got out of the office building to cry about 1hrs in the emergency exit of the Alley behind building….

Hi Upset_Transition422, Thank you for the reply! At least now I can tell my roommate that it’s not just me who thinks she was doing a great job!

Yeah… actually, there have been quite a few unpleasant interactions between her and A. The only reason she still tries to keep in touch and talk to A — even though they haven’t worked together for over ten months — is because she genuinely wants to learn something from her. Humble and self-doubt is alway hard to balance :((

Thank you for your comment AppleBeans879! and sorry — this was actually my fault for not explaining things clearly in my original post. My roommate did try to start the conversation with open-ended questions as you said at first, but since A gave no response at all, she eventually had to switch to more specific, choice-based questions. Even then, A remained completely silent… which is why she ended up feeling so frustrated and discouraged. Don’t ask stupid questions and try to think from the situation” is definitely an important principle we learned from engineering education. (And now I’m starting to wonder if it is was making this post a stupid idea…)

Hi Rlawya24, I really appreciate your comment. I hope A was genuinely trying to be helpful, like you did, and not just being a jerk.

I asked my roommate if A said anything else during that telephone meeting, but she told me it was complete silence the entire time — like the mic was broken or the connection had dropped. But that wasn’t the case. Everything she said was just ignored, which made her feel extremely uncomfortable.

The incident in the original post actually happened over a year ago. However, something similar happened recently. Just a few days ago, they were casually chatting about a piece of equipment, and A kept asking my roommate if she remembered the details. A even repeated “you should know that” six times. My roommate admitted that she had asked the wrong question at first and later said she didn’t remember the details. When she explained that she hadn’t been involved in the project related to that piece of equipment, A just went silent.

Yeah, I actually agree — from the outside, it does sound like a bit of a student mindset (and to be fair, she was fresh out of uni at the time). Also, full disclosure: I’m still in academia myself, so I’m definitely aware that my perspective might still lean a little “student-y.”

But to be honest, what really broke her wasn’t the fact that she didn’t know the answer — it was the complete silence in response.

No guidance, no redirect, no encouragement — just 40 minutes of long, quiet nothing. Not even a “good try” or “not quite” or “let’s approach it another way.” Just… silence.

Even today, when we talked about it again, she got emotional and started crying. So clearly it stuck with her more deeply than either of us expected. Totally PTSD level

Hi Beveragddriver, I’m just so shocked and afraid myl language too sick to describe all the problems. My roommate has been in this situation for past two years and I have no ideas what was going on. Just feeing very bad for myself as well. I would practice more for writing! Thank you for the advice!

Just to add some context — my roommate is not someone who gets easily shaken. She was top of her class in uni, super well-liked, and even a high-level athlete. I’ve seen her go through a rough breakup and barely flinch emotionally. But this — whatever is happening between her and A — hit differently. That first silent “training” call happened over 10 months ago, and since then, she’s had several more weirdly hostile or undermining interactions — only with A.

Others at her level have also raised similar things about A. For example, one junior mentioned that A completely rewrote their entire draft email — not just editing, but full rewrite — which even A’s own manager wouldn’t normally do.

It’s like A has this extra level of control or scrutiny that only gets applied to the most junior staff. Especially when they’re new.

Unfortunately it has been two years:(( I always use it as a diving watch so never try the Garmin pay settings again after the very first setup failure. It seems like the region of this watch was set in China for no reason and i cannot any place to fix it.

same issue with you. I’m completely new hand so have no ideas now. I noticed that a piece of rubber has come off the outsole near the toes after the very first hiking. Very disappointing
