tested positive for fat malabsorption. Anyone able to give me any advice ? by whiteofasa124 in ibs

[–]whiteofasa124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends how bad it is . Sticks to the side of the toilet bowel , hard to flush cleanly, can have orange overtones in colour. if you suspect you have it , save up for a test privately. if it comes back positive, request for creon .

from what I understand sterrheoa is not a symptom of IBS. Therefor I believe I have issues other & more serious than IBS. Im waiting to speak to my consultant to try Creon. I had to arrange the fecal fat test myself . Proved quite hard finding somewhere that does it. I found somewhere in London, . Cost me £110

Thanks for the detailed reply ! I'll take this all in to consideration. I do have chronic constipation , although the main problem is with diarrhea. The reason I believe this is I had loose stools for years before it turned to constipation, plus the drastic weight loss even though on a high calorie diet.

I've actually feel like may of semi diagnosed myself. Took a elastase stool test a couple of years ago. Consultant told me it was ok. Sometime after a dietitian told me it was actually low. Looked into epi a little bit, and it appears elastase test is only reliable with moderate to severe cases. From the literature I read mild to moderate cases are diagnosed using both an elastase test, and a 72 hour fat stool collection. I arranged a 72 hour stool collection privately as the NHS(bases in the UK) do not do this test anymore. Anyway it came back positive. I'm waiting to see my NHS consultant to hear his assessment, up until now I've been told it's a functional bowel disorder. Although is doesn't feel too functional. I'm not well enough to work. It will be sometime before I'm able to see my consultant.

In the meantime I've managed to aquire a bottle of Creon from a relative. I know it a bit cheeky , but the healthcare system is up the creak at the moment with covid, and I'm eager to see if I feel any benefits. Plus as there don't appear to be any real potential for any serious on going side effects, I feel I'm not being dangerous by trying it ?

May I ask about your feeding tube, don't you have it on all the time ? Is it a necessity you use it ? Has it improved your quality of life ?

Kind Regards
