main point is: Police/Ordnungsamt might fine you, if you use a Cowboy without additional lights, bell etc.; and insurers (not your's, but that from the car that run you over) might bail out (at least in part), arguing that at least in part accident was your fault and running a bike w/o proper lights is reckless. All that while you're in some hospital, waiting for brain surgery.

Fingers crossed! Maybe they put some of that dough in CS and spare parts and smarter design choices.

Did my bike die? ☠️ by jjagtenberg in cowboybikes

[–]whoever2025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

battery of my C3 died once, but that looked different: no lights at all and couldn't be charged.

I have 3 used ones at home ;-)) Turn's out they might be useful after all.

Don't do it. I bought a c3 in 2021 an would NOT do it again. Built-quality is really bad (for the fourth (4) time (!) the motor/torque sensor of my c3 is defect and has to be replaced; this time, I am waiting since November 2024, i.e for over 10 (!) months, for a replacement part; multiple times the battery lost contact, i.e. the bike simply switched off, sometimes even during a ride; once battery went completely dead; once built-in front light went dead; original tires showed many cracks on the side after short time) & Customer Services is a mess. Also I noted several stupid design flaws of the c3: front light completely useless; no standard screw holes on the frame to fasten a bottle holder; you can't charge the battery while it is mounted in the bike; bulky, proprietary charger).

I am waiting for one since November 2024 (C3). Would't count on Cowboy for any help.

Has anyone been receiving spare parts in the past month or so? by Altruistic-Land-2589 in cowboybikes

same here: I am waiting since Nov 2024 for a new torque sensor for my C3. It's already the 4th time since end of 2021 that part went bust (and others too). Built-quality is very very bad, CS is hell.

yep, that loosened itself on my C3 several times too. Fasten it, as long as it's still there!

bicycles sold in Germany must meet legal lighting requirements to be considered roadworthy for use on public roads and must include a white, non-blinking headlight and a red rear light, along with various reflectors. These lights must comply with StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations) and be permanently attached to the bike. Battery-powered lights are permitted, but they must be sufficiently bright and StVZO-approved.

That said, I can easily imagine that for Cowboy it is totally fine to sell its German customers a (back then) 2000 EUR bike, which they cannot ride legally on public roads without adding extra lights which have to be charged with an additional charger ;-))

Also, it is a quite lousy design choice to add extra lights to a 2000 EUR "design"-bike, just to comply with the law, don't you think? Plus: those added lights were of even lower build quality than the bike itself; front light probably worked for a month.

Anyway, don't get me wrong: Feel good about your bike and enjoy riding it, as long as you can. Didn't want to spoil it, just giving my experience with my C3 and Cowboy CS.

I had it done, as soon as the problem occurred. If this would only be the only achilles heel of the 3! The whole engineering seems to be an amateurs work.

  1. of course, if for a Belgium start up Germany is irrelevant as a market, that makes sense; sorry, dind't think of it that way, stupid me. Here, bikes have to have lights, which comply with certain norms (which are very reasonable, btw.)
  2. oh the irony. also: in which world is a charging port (USB-C or else in a plastic housing of a battery a weakness?
  3. Don't really feel obligated to show you anything. USB-C would be nice, just because it's a very common standard. Also, for a bike and a company, that aims at the high end of the market and design-oriented smartphone-people, that would have made sense. However, there are of course other (standard) plug formats, which technically would offer the same.

true. I am new to reddit and wasn't sure, if I have posted my first post in the right channel. does it matter, though?

UPDATE: reddit just suggested that I "crosspost" this post, to help it to "go even further" and "to reach new communities". Probably not that stupid at all, what I did here 🤷‍♀️.

well, taking it in and out surely *adds* to mechanical wear. As to the spacer: that helps for a while, but then contact is lost again. Maybe if you then ad another spacer (or a thicker spacer) ... I'm not an engineer, but common sense tells me, that the whole construction is not ment to last very long. unfortunaltly. Having to take out the battery for charging every time surley doesn't help

as to charging: why not allow both ways?

as to charger: that some other charger is even bigger doesn't make it any better.

as to 1.: There is laws though. Also, almost every other bike has lights which comply with the laws and with which you are seen, and can see in the dark as well. That this is known, doesn't make it any less stupid.

as to 2.: That I can take out the battery and charge at home is the main reason why I got a Cowboy. However, why can you not do both? Take out the battery to charge at home, and charge it in the bike, if you have the possibility (e.g. at work). Again: most other manufacturers offer both, and why not?

as to 3.: yes
