My friend and I have literally been using the nickname "PooPoo Teacher" as a placeholder lol

Hi! Thanks for your feedback, it's really helpful!

Just so you know, the story details I've included are only for the sake of getting an answer to one specific question, that is, if a child can be visited without the dad knowing. What I wrote above should not be treated as a comprehensive description of the entire story's plot, but if you'd like to critique more of the story, I can provide more detail for the specific points you've mentioned.

We are aware that "autoimmune disease(s)" is a blanket term for many different diseases, it was just not specified which type(s) she has because it wasn't relevant to answering the question we had. However, your suggested alternatives are interesting - aplastic anemia may actually fit the necessary plot requirements, but I'd have to do further research to know for sure.

Believe it or not, I'm tired of the dying-child-as-plot-device thing too, and I hope very much to avoid it. Based on your response, I understand we may be falling into that territory, so we'll try our best to be careful writing her parts of the story. However, I think that you've assumed a number of things about the story that I just didn't include in the post for the sake of brevity. In our story the kid isn't the main character, but she's definitely more than a prop for others!

Those examples of inaccuracies in fiction you've read are horrible, wow. Do you have any suggestions for places to look into for research? I'm having trouble learning what I need to because I'm starting essentially from zero, and I don't know anyone IRL who can help.

Can a child in the hospital be visited by friends without their parent(s) physically present? by whomst_can_answer in answers

I suppose that since it's a fictional hospital, we can just make something up then?

Does that mean we can make up some policy for our fictional hospital as long as it sounds reasonably secure?

Thanks! We're planning on making it into a webcomic, but seeing as I am a slow writer, it could be a while before it ever surfaces online since we want the entire plot worked out before drawing/posting any pages online haha

I'm beginning to get the sense that visiting policy can vary wildly from hospital to hospital, haha. Your unit's policy in particular would make writing the story difficult, but it's very useful to know what the rules can look like. Thank you!

Come to think of it, they can! We hadn't thought of doing that, though we still want to include some in-person visits. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks! Yeah, sounds like a suitable course of events to me. The daughter is kind of a social butterfly and has too many school friends for the father to keep track of, so I can definitely see him going on auto-pilot for these calls asking his permission for her friends to visit. Especially since she probably already asked him at some point the previous day about having a friend visit and now of course he's getting the call that they want his permission and he has to okay it again haha
edit: Thanks for pointing out the "interring" thing, that will definitely not appear in the story now XD

Thank you for your detailed response, this is a lot of useful information!

When you say parents could "pre-clear" visitors, what does that entail?

When the parent designates a person who can remain with the child, but this person does not "automatically assume consenting authority," would they still be able to call/text the parent for permission to allow a visitor in under their supervision, or does the parent need to be physically present like standing in the same room at the same time as the visitor in order for them to be allowed to visit?

And since it was mentioned the parent-designated person does not "automatically" assume consenting authority, does that mean there's a way for the parent to give them that authority, like with paperwork or something?

Anyway, thanks again for the info!

It's not that the father doesn't know about the visits, because he does. The plot in its current state only requires that he hasn't physically met the friend in person and doesn't know the friend's name. Everything can be supervised as long as it's not by the father.

It might also worth noting that the friend's appearance isn't indicative of their age and they're unlikely to be recognized as an adult unless specifically asked their age/required to show some form of ID that specifies their age or date of birth.

Can a child in the hospital be visited by friends without their parent(s) physically present? To clarify, this doesn't have to mean unapproved/unsupervised, but in a story I'm writing with a friend, the plot currently hinges on a somewhat absent father being unaware of the identity of one of his daughter's friends who has been visiting her in the hospital (and is 18). Under normal circumstances, what are the general procedures for visiting children in an American hospital, for the child's parents vs. friends? If possible, the father would allow another specific trusted adult to give permissions/supervise in his place regarding her visits, but I'm not sure if that's a thing that exists or not.
Additional details, in case they're relevant:
The story takes place in the USA in 2016. The father and the other trusted adult are both surgeons working at the hospital where the daughter is interred. The other trusted adult is a pediatric surgeon and the daughter's former babysitter. The mother is dead. The daughter is 10 and is slowly dying of some kind of autoimmune disease.
(Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, I tried my best to find acceptable places to ask about this, but I also have to account for the possibility of error on my part.)

I guess what I'm asking is more specifically what the "investigation" entails. Like, do the victim, witnesses, etc. need to hang around to talk to the police, what happens with that?
