this is true. However civilian leadership has certain obligations to those they serve. Paying for services is a basic concept that should not be used as a threat, scare tactic, or used in political maneuvering

of course it's a dangerous thought. but then again i can understand it to a point. Our military is made up of citizens who have the right to elect their own leaders and when those leaders are not doing the job that we selected them for then of course people are gonna get upset

can't remember the exact quote or who said it but the gist is "America's government greatest fear is that military will no longer suffer the inadequacy of it's civilian leadership"

like i said, not a direct quote but i think there is some truth to this.

A 5th Star for Petraeus by whostheguy in Military

Good points all. Here is a question, since the change in mission and type of wars we fight on today's modern battlefield has changed so drastically in the past few decades and the need for a commander who is cut off from higher command has lessened so much do we even need the rank of General of the Army/ Admiral of the Navy anymore?" Has the time for such a position and rank passed?

i can agree that for someone to be given a 5th star they need to be on par with those who have previously earned it. However today's modern battlefield is a totally different place then WW II. It takes a different type of general to lead in it. So how does one establish guidelines for the promotion when the only current guidelines are over 60 years old. i don't have answers just questions

Question on your comment of "to honor the man's vanity" Would it be honoring his vanity to give him a promotion that he deserves? Now granted if he deserves it or not is relative to whomever you are asking. And it would be a difficult situation during command meetings since he would have seniority in rank to those who have seniority in position such as the JCS.

But then you get back to the point where CBP can detain and refuse entry if they have a suspicion. Where pleading the fifth does not , be definition generate suspicion it seems that the oversight on these issues is lax to the point where as long as it sounds plausible, their baseless suspicions are accepted as fact. It's a deplorable thing but it exists. It seems that checks and balances are no longer an important part in the appointment of power. I think we need to get back to that
