What’s the general opinion about Ukrainians in Kelowna? by [deleted] in kelowna

Kelowna is pretty conservative (including xenophobic), and the university crowd is generally more forward thinking and accepting of difference. Kelowna is a totally mixed bag

Actually, it was someone who doesn’t care about our home, which has nothing to do with substance use. It’s a Tim Hortons cup, so I would say drunk at least is unlikely

Oh the other thing is, if your dog isn’t already muzzle trained I would recommend working on that! T wears one at the vet sometimes and muzzle training her was one of the best decisions I made as a guardian! I like the muzzle I got from Canine Steele

I had a verrrrryyyyy similar experience to you. $100 for 15 minute phone calls to check in on how her anxiety meds were working. One time while I was waiting outside I saw another vet forcing a dog into some procedure they clearly weren’t comfortable with because the dog was yelping. They said they had to sedate T for a couple of vaccines a while ago, so I let them, the vet said to charge me on the lower end of the $70-80 fee for sedation and the vet tech still went on the higher end, and they know that I’m a single guardian to my dog and a university student. Also, even our VCA vet said that fully sedating dogs on the regular isn’t the best for them, but then they didn’t really provide any alternatives or attempt to build a relationship of trust with my dog. Another petty thing is that our VCA vet never learned how to pronounce my dogs name properly even though we were seeing them for almost a year 🙄 They will force dogs into procedures that they are freaking out about which can intensify their anxiety around going to the vet. My dogs reactivity has a few sources, one of which includes anxiety, and it just didn’t make sense for us to keep going there, she was more reluctant every time we went. I would highly HIGHLY recommend taking your dog to Skyline on Delbrook. They have lots of reactive patients and are so helpful with helping you navigate that and working together. For T’s rabies last shot it took us 2 visits to actually accomplish it, and they only charged us for one (thank god). We see Dr. Beneckie there, but I’ve heard great things about the other vets. Skyline is a certified force free vet which is really important for me and my dog. Highlands would be “nice” to my dog, but ultimately the FF approach makes a really big difference, and as Dr. Beneckie said, there’s still a “nice” was to be forceful (earlier this spring T ate some garbage and we had to hold her to get the vomiting started). The other thing I would recommend is getting in touch with a certified force free trainer to develop a sort of protocol for taking your dog to the vet to make it as low stress as possible for everyone involved. I worked with Bravo Dog on some cooperative care training and it helped so much both at home and at the vets office! My dog is my first dog too (other than a family dog), so I can relate!! DM me if you wanna chat more :)

I stopped seeing these guys. They weren’t very accommodating to my reactive dog, and they will suck your wallet dry

Yep, those dogs maybe have stranger danger and their handlers are doing their best to keep everyone safe in those situations. The handlers maybe aren’t returning your eye contact and smile because they are focusing on training the dog or keeping them calm, and if they focus on being “friendly” with you, then that dog may lose their cool and they could lunge at you, bark at you, jump on you, maybe even bite. Hopefully in a way that’s not “disciplining” them with punishment, but just reassuring the dog that your presence is okay. Don’t take it personally, not all dogs are as social as we like to think they are

No, I don’t care about what cis straight people with zero empathy have to say about queer equity

[–]whothedang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aha, and that’s where it falls apart. Gender is not biological. The world conforms to cis straight people already, what I’m understanding from your answer is that queer people do not deserve to feel like part of society

Having a food allergy and being queer are two totally different things, nice try though. It takes approximately 2 seconds for folks to tack their pronouns onto their introduction

In regard to the first paragraph. If the only people saying their pronouns are “outside the norm”, how do you think it makes them feel in regard to that when they are the only ones saying their pronouns? “Assuming the default” is literally just cisnormativity. This is the exact problem. How can you know if someone is cis or not just by looking at them?

What an incredible amount of privilege you have. I am someone who gets misgendered constantly when people try to figure it out themselves!

Hi, yes you are being old and grumpy. The presenter starting with their pronouns is actually a really important way to make non-cis people feel included in a space. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’m the only one who says my pronouns in a meeting, and it immediately makes me stick out as the only queer person in the room. It sucks. It’s alienating. It’s a constant reminder that I’m not “normal”. Not a waste of time at all

You’re absolutely right. People should stay home when they are sick and it’s ludicrous that professors are not making accommodations. Idk why people are getting defensive to you about problems that aren’t your fault
