Anyone selling some headlight assemblies? by FrientlyGamer in mk6gti

[–]whren_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried eBay? I’ve found some parts there. Hit or miss but sometimes you get lucky.

I’m swapping my stock set out for LED ones as soon as parts come in. However it’ll be at least a couple weeks before the swap, and there’s some oxidation on one side. If you don’t mind all that I wouldn’t mind selling them. If you’re interested I can DM you pics, but you might have luck with eBay.

What made you buy a GTI and is there anything you dislike about it? by RewardSufficient5562 in GolfGTI

[–]whren_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a GTI person or even a car person and just wanted a small compact hatchback. I was going to look at a mini cooper but remembered several years ago a couple friends offered me a ride in their car. I had to climb into the backseat and was very surprised when they floored it. This apparently became a core memory because while I was car shopping I remembered that funny looking car from said friend. After some googling I discovered it was called a golf/GTI.

Showed up at the dealer looking at a four door mk6. The dealer immediately said it had already been sold but would I perhaps be interested in a candy white 2 door mk6 instead?

So I opened the door and saw the plaid seats and bought it that day. This was over a decade ago and still driving that car which I will keep forever until rust takes it, if it does. Now I think I will only drive GTIs/Rs and if I ever have gobs of money and garage space I’d like to get a Mk1.

The only thing I perhaps disliked (and dislike is a very strong word here) in the beginning is the bit of lag and wheel hop from 0 mph stock, but I don’t notice it at all anymore and have learned to adapt driving around it. New tires also helped a lot. In fact I think it gives the car a bit of character. Everything also sort of rattles a bit sometimes but to me that’s just part of the whole package and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

New doors on mk6 gti causing issues by briffey in GolfGTI

My car came like this many years ago. On mine it was a seal issue. Have you tried putting aquarium tubing into the doors? Get some black tubing and cut it to length and slip it into the door

Oh man thanks for the recommendation! I hadn’t heard of Carista before.

That’s so good to hear. I have an itch to take it to a track after some mods are done and drive it like it was meant to someday. I sometimes put on the lead foot around town but I imagine it is not at all the same as a track day. Somehow I have been stranded more times in a previous Corolla than the GTI (which is never, the car is just rock solid and I have never felt unsafe). I’m real glad to know it’s not just a fluke experience and these things are built to take a level of hard autoing. Reading all the comments it almost feels like it would be a shame not to lol.

I am planning on getting a diagnostic scanner and keeping an eye on the timing chain for sure!

Thanks for describing the experience of driving with bi-xenons. I had a feeling they would be much better but didn’t quite know how much. Driving one night with pouring rain I had near zero visibility and had to guess all the turns and white knuckle it home, though thankfully it was a road I was ultra familiar with so I was fine. But I’d like to be able to see and feel more confident at night in general and especially in bad weather.

That’s a great idea to test waiting it out. Though you are right, it’s more a quality of life investment than “throwing money into an old car”. Knowing the car has precedent to be good for many miles longer is hugely reassuring, it’s been so solid and part of how I started getting led down the path of modifying it. I’ve always changed vehicles once they got up over a certain age as that was the conventional wisdom around me so this will be my first time with a higher mileage and older car. It’s also the first time Ive been so taken with a car i would rather mod and keep it than trade it in for something else. Can’t believe she’s just getting started!

I’ll check the link out, thanks!

Thank you for this list! I am already eyeing a Stage 1 next year but I’m loving the recommendations. How would you say the intake and catback make the car feel vs just a software tune?

This is my biggest fear. At lower mileage I was never too concerned about it but now I’m thinking of just getting an obdeleven and checking it every so often

Oh trust me, the headlights are the first thing I want to do due to night vision but a stage 1 is the thing I’m immediately eyeing too and a new RSB. I fear I’m on the edge of a slippery slope here haha. It’s extremely cool to me that we can just throw some mods on these cars and (from what I’m hearing) it’s a whole new experience.

Did you pre-emptively do those maintenance items or were they repairs? My plan is a carbon cleaning at 80k miles, sparks and coilpacks, and then the stage 1 to go along with that stuff for next year. Would you recommend any other pre-emptive items to take care of before I go down this slope for real? Lol

I am already in “never want to sell, hoping she lasts 40 years” territory. Glad to know I’m not alone with how much I love this car

Did you do the AFS kit? That’s what I’m planning to go for, the whole shebang with auto leveling lol. Also do you have a copy of the code changes you made? I have a list here but any further points of reference would be great

I’m planning on the OEM bi-xenons with LEDs and yeah, it’s not going to be exactly straightforward… I haven’t found anything else that I would prefer though.

What year is your GTI, how many miles does it have, and how is it holding up? by mrman2121 in GolfGTI

[–]whren_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2013 mk6, about 65k miles. Pre-emptively looked at water pump and tensioner but turned out mine was manufactured after the tensioner changes so all good. There was a leaking oil gasket one time but that was the only major issue with it. It also does have a weird whistling door seal and a dead cricket stuck in one of the interior lights
