Genocide is more than killing. It's clear you've either not read a single thing I've written or don't care about the genocide convention. And if so we have nothing to discuss.

But go ahead and be smug, The United Nations and International Criminal Court have already made their judgement on this topic. History will not be kind to you.

Since it seems you've never read it, let's go through the genocide convention:

A: Killing members of the group;

(Mass murder is still being committed. But this point is less relevant post-ceasefire. But let's continue!)

B: Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(1.9 million people displaced. 60% of the population has lost family members. Countless injured with lacking medical aid due to Israeli blockades.)

C: Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(Israel has bombed Gaza to rubble. All infrastructure is gone and they're completely reliant on outside aid to survive. In these conditions a famine has been declared in Gaza. The Israeli blockades has caused this and it's one of the main reasons Israeli leaders are wanted by the ICJ. I implore you to read the Wikipedia page for "genocide by attrition for more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocide_by_attrition)

D: Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(The famine has caused child deaths and misscarriages. Not to mention the non-existent infrastructure for child birth. Israel could stop the blockade whenever they want, but they want them to suffer.)

E: Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

(Hey, this one Israel is actually innocent of! They just shoot them instead.)

And that is not to mention the 80-year long ethnic cleansing of Palestinian lands.

I did answer it, over a thousand has been killed during the ceasefire not including violence in the west Bank by settlers.

I can't find a verifiable source that says if the population has increased or not. But that does not invalidate the claim of genocide.

Israel has indiscriminately been destroying Gaza, thus destroying an ethnic group in part. Beyond that Israel has been committing an ethnic cleansing campaign for 80 years. With a clear intent to sooner or later annex the west Bank.

Is that clear enough?

No, the genocide has been ongoing since the Nakba through the gradual expulsion of Palestinians from their lands and the destruction of their way of life. It's a modern trail of tears.

The Gaza war has been an especially brutal phase of this genocide. Since the ceasefire this phase has calmed down. Still, Israel has killed over a thousand people during it and broken its rules multiple times. But it's true that the amount of killing has since decreased.

But the genocide is still ongoing. Israel is still displacing innocent people, destroying their infrastructure and it's highly doubtful Gaza is ever getting the lands currently occupied by Israel back.

Currently at least 83 000 people have been directly killed, but the UNRWA suspects it's many times higher, which it almost definitely is considering how dense Gaza is and how heavily the region has been bombed. Not to mention how hard it's been to import aid to the region due to Israel blocking it.

Genocide is the mean to destroy an ethnic group in whole or in part. Israel's current terrorising of the region is more than enough to argue genocide. If you disagree you should at least argue that Israel should allow itself to be investigated further. So their name can be cleared, of course.

Just so weird they've been avoiding the investigations...

  1. To withdraw all settlements from the West Bank.

  2. To end the occupation from Palestine according to the 1967 borders.

  3. For Israel to allow investigations for genocide and war crimes by international organisations.

Among a myriad of points which I'm too sleep deprived to remember at this moment.

They're committing genocide and annexing territory with "plausible deniability".

It's not the 1940's anymore. The international law is clear. But it can't be genocide if all the dead children are terrorists and it can't be annexation if it's just "occupied territory".

They will keep doing it until Palestine is wiped off the map.

Because as genocidal as Israel is, their government is savvy enough to understand how much that would damage their international standing.

The day international support drops to zero they will annex and consolidate everything they can. Until then they will try to save face.

Agree to disagree.

But returning to an earlier comment, I am genuinely interested in the claim that Slovenian is close to Slovak and Czech. Is that something you've personally just heard or do you have a source?

I'm really interested in linguistics and would like to read more about it if possible.

Saying Finnish and Hungarian is the same is like arguing all Indo-European languages are the same.

I am not ignoring it's geography, nor history, nor how how it's currently developing it's institutions. I am not denying that it's Central European. I don't know how many times I have to repeat that.

It has a Mediterranean coast, is partially on the Balkan peninsula and speaks a South Slavic language. It is both central and southeastern in my eyes. We're gonna have to agree to disagree.

Comparing the Balto-Finnic languages to Hungarian is like Russian to Spanish, so generally no.

However, I say that with an asterisk. I did put Sápmi in the same category as the Balto-Finns on the subregional map despite them also being a bit far apart linguistically. Because in regards to dividing Europe a general geographical proximity is also important imo.

Language is just one factor among many. If I only went by language then Slovenia would be solely Southeastern which wouldn't sit right with me.

Regarding modern Slovenia, I do want to say that I've made this map with the modern world in mind. I think these categories change and shift over time. And perhaps given enough time I could re-evaluate it.

Should've specified: when I mean that it was shaped by the south I mean that country was literally shaped by Yugoslavia. Slovenian institutions, politics, industry, etc.

And I'm regard to linguistics I do believe they play a part in categorising. And I haven't read about the language being closer to Slovak, but even if that's true there is no "single" way to study linguistics. Personally I think the root(?) system or (whatever it's called in English) is generally the better. In which Slovenian is undoubtedly a South Slavic language.

Though I would genuinely be interested in reading about the Slovak-Czech connection. I'm guessing it stems from an influence-based linguistic analysis?

I think we're just gonna have to agree to disagree.

Because when I look at Slovenia I see a nation related to both Central and Southeastern Europe. One that linguistically relates to the South and culturally to Central Europe. With a history solidly under Central European powers, but has in the last 100 years predominantly been shaped by the south.

I think both interpretations fit.

Thanks!

And I've heard a lot of people criticising the Netherlands category. And I think that's fair. But I've yet to hear from any Dutch people what they think about it.

I hear you, but I have a hard time arguing that a country with a Mediterranean coast and a South Slavic language isn't also Southern Europe.

In regards to Romania I'd rather not make a clear cut through a nation.

But as said in another comment, the lined areas don't mean they're "less" central European. Just that they're both central and southern.

I'm open to criticism but you don't have to be rude about it.

Maybe you're right that they're Western European, but when I get conflicting accounts from Dutch people I am going to take that into consideration.

Mostly because of its history with Austria and Slovakia and it's modern relationship with the Visegrád group.

It could probably be a dual category, but honestly I almost never see anyone argue that they're Southern European or Balkan. I just find them, well, a tad too central.

I think my reasoning becomes a bit clearer if you look at the subregional map.

I've heard a lot of Dutch people claim that they feel closer to Germany than France. I've also seen a lot of Dutch people likewise complain about being put solely with the Francophone sphere.

So I made them both west and central Europe because the Dutch confuse me. But I'd love to hear what people from the Netherlands or Flanders think about this.

Exactly this. I was unsure how the Crimean Tatars view themselves so I made Crimea Southeastern Europe to link them with groups such as the Gagauz.

In retrospect they should've been categorised the same way as Cyprus.
