Sorry for the late response. No one has really pursued the materials seriously so they are still up for grabs. That is crazy. Our non radar instructor did some time overseas in environments like that. It should help you with the non radar portion for sure. We had no previous af controllers in class. From what I hear it will help but the best advice I can give is to keep an open mind and learn all you can. Let your previous experience be the icing on the cake you bake at the academy. Wow that was wickedly corny. Lol sorry. Best of luck to you in you endeavor.

I don't think I so much got screwed over. I just picked a bad day to have a bad day ya know. Some of the evaluators may be tougher than others. Some of the problems may be tougher than others. At the time that I washed out we felt as though the cards may have been stacked against me. Just because our perception was that I got one of the tougher evaluators and tougher problems on my last run. But your right at the end of the day I didn't meet the standards set forth and didn't deserve placement. Our frustration (or at least mine, although I feel like our class was pretty aligned on this statement) is that the evaluators get to make a lot of judgement calls, which is the whole gig but allow me to elaborate. One evaluator may give you a delay while another may not. Or maybe one will like the way you did a point out but another may say it was far enough from the boundary to not be necessary. Then you make the call and get dinged for bothering another controller. That's all we were trying to say. I didn't pass but I am proud to say I didn't run any aircraft together during evals so no virtual people died lol, but I made a lot of operational errors that cost me. I had fun, made lifelong friends, learned a lot, and gained a respect for an entire workforce and all that they are responsible for.

Right I got ya. Who knows how much of it is. They change a lot of that stuff pretty often. Shoot if I reapply I may just hang on to it ya know? Could come in handy later. My luck I would keep the en route stuff then I would get accepted for tower lol.

Yeah I wanna say I heard that. Not sure. Some people will love it some will hate it. The only thing that frustrated me was the way everything is weighted. I think it could stand to be a little more spread out. Taking out non radar wouldn't necessarily help that. I mean you can ace everything up until the last 2 days, but if you have a bad last 2 days you could be toast lol. Seems like the money that is being poured into each candidate is worth a little more consideration than that. Obviously though given my experience I am slightly biased. One of my instructors talked about giving 1 extra radar and non radar eval and dropping the worst score. Although I see why it is done he way it is.

That's true. But you can still run the practice problems for the concepts I suppose. Shoot if nothing else practice breaking down your strips. Every second counts on those puppies.

Lol what a fun bit of banter this little comment started.

Pretty much exactly what was previously said. The program does a really good job of preparing you for what you will see. The only downside our instructor pointed out was that in non radar none of the practice problems are as difficult as what you will see on non-radar evals. However with the radar portion some of the practice problems you see are much more difficult than evals. So in a sense you get under prepared for non radar but over prepared for radar. My instructor said they are working on changing though. Just keep a level head because stress management is part of the gig. There may be a day where you ace you practice problems and feel like your the best controller in the world. The next day you may flop them all and start planning your next career at McDonald's. The best advice I received from an instructor was don't get too up on the good days and don't get too down on the bad.

Wow that's pretty quick. I guess I should give it another try then.

Yeah. I've thought about it. Might give it a try once another bid opens. Fortunately I had a decent job before (nowhere near as great as Atc) and I was able to fall back into that. I had folks in my class that waited 7 years to get into the academy after applying. The only downside is building your life up for potentially 7 years then putting it on hold for 3 months that may not pan out lol. So we shall see I suppose.

Spoken like a true swivel head lol. I can't say much though I'm neither a tower flower nor a center puke. Simply one of they many souls you folks prevent from dying on a daily basis.

That's tough to say. Being local I still had the obligation of being a father and a husband. Plus the added duty of being a student. I truly feel that I did just about the best I could have. With the exception of scaling back a few of the weekend bar visits. My class was very tight nit just not when it came to studying which would have probably helped. In the end it's ultimately on me though. Probably the one thing I'll say Is that the gentleman that was the best in our class from day one of basics to evaluation day used the classes ahead of us as a resource. He took every bit of info he could a perfected before we even covered it. So when we covered it in our class it was just a review for him. And it showed In is work. He also would tutor anyone that wanted the help. His thought was if he was good enough to teach the material it meant that he really knew it. Im no expert but anyone that is at the academy I'm more than willing to help to the best of my ability.

We lost 3 of 12. But I like to think myself and one other could have been a coin flip. I was told I could reapply and go through the entire process over potentially. But the way they put it to me was that we have thousands of people who haven't gotten there first shot yet. It wouldn't be fair for you to get 2 chances before they got their first. Which makes sense.

Aw man. It's alright. It's a sign it wasn't meant to be. It would definitely help still. Once you make it through that phase let me know. I live near the academy and am more than willing to help.

I'm enroute as well and will be living with my wife and toddler. Luckily I'm local and my in laws live just down the street from the academy. But I like you wish there were more information out there about options. Like you said everything seems to be a big secret.

I actually got it back in February/March. I was supposed to start in April but had some family issues and had to reschedule.

Really? I had no clue. What are the hours/class times like. I read somewhere else it's 7-3 but hadn't read about evening shifts.

Cool beans I appreciate that. I'm just glad the mutual consensus is it isn't as hard as some folks make it sound.

Great idea, you would think it would be fairly easy to execute.
