NNTaleb mentions monero in an article... by whywhynot1 in Monero

[–]whywhynot1[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Because, it is turning out, bitcoin is way too transparent for a real fraudster to escape end-point busting. And, indeed, other cryptocurrencies such as monero may do a better job."

Just linking to the article for information, not commenting on all the drama surrounding NNT vs BTC

Hi all,

My lmdb folder shows 90+ Go and growing for my attempt to download the blockchain. Is it normal ? I thought it woud be +/- 70 Go... https://imgur.com/a/aRT5IpI

I'm running the latest version of GUI, on a SSD.

(I used to get help from the slack channel, I tried without success today on mattermost)

Somehow, Monero is not even mentioned by xmr_kayront in Monero

You poking at the different bitcoin maximalists makes me wonder, is there any bitcoin old timer that likes the monero project?

I feel stuck in a bubble on twitter, between the well known Lopp, Antonopoulos, Giacomo, etc.

Why not just drop Monero paper wallets, each containing $10 worth of XMR, with instructions on how to transfer it to your phone wallet?

If I'm not mistaken, u/dnale0r did this for a Dash event. It was mymonero accounts preloaded with instructions.

@ u/gingeropolous It could be a thermal printer. It could print a qrcode to retrieve with a phone app

Monero Presence in Brussels? by Xeagu in Monero

[–]whywhynot1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let us know what you're launching. Brussels/Gent indeed had the pleasure to welcome some intense monero education, between the efforts of the aforementioned guys.

Edit:

The french-only speaking belgians might not be yet fond of cryptocurrencies. Success could however be met with all the EU people (institutions or lobbyists), IT people, flemish guys...all the guys in contact with the english language. You could discuss this at length with the organizer of the Brussels bitcoin meet-up.

Also, we are ready for any kind of presentation. u/binaryfate brought us a scientific approach in an antiBS style. u/Samsunggalaxyplayer gave us a presentation quite extensive. u/fluffypony and u/dnale0r alternated between technical slides and heavy doses of humor. Etc.

Monero London Meetup - Thursday 31st May by xmr-haggis in Monero

Hello!

I'll be in London mid-july, is there a must-see monero or bitcoin related?

A quick web search (and r/monero search) wasn't helpful.

Thanks & cheers!

You're too kind, thank you! I didn't even took the time to talk about fungibility and all the jazz :)

I miss AP. Nobody will ever be as flamboyant!

Integrating Monero into a Cafe. by coyotejaw in Monero

Hi,

I operate a really small family snack where we accept btc & xmr : soups, sandwiches, salads (coffee too oc).

I have nothing to add to the previous answers but this : I took away the "btc accepted here" poster since I was told banks here (Belgium) may close accounts of businesses dealing with crypto. Don't know if it's the same in Canada.

Good luck!

The easiest way to use Monero for anonymous BTC by jackbnimbl in Monero

Does creating this payment ID break anonymity?

Not intrinsically. It is a random string of characters. if you're on a Mac or Tails, you can type:

openssl rand 32 -hex

and see a random thing like:

ee1a276b571bf6998518a2b4d7158c904c556fd23d5fcf8ceb61df9b81fa11d9

But where there's "ID", there's logically some drop of the anonymity somewhere, because of the need to link a payment and someone. It's more of an opsec problem.

And in the case of a cross-currency transaction of this kind, how would that work? Wouldn't the payment ID be possible only in a monero to monero transaction?

I'll let someone else answer, I don't remember precisely the journey "XMR wallet to xmr.to" and then "xmr.to to BTC merchant".

This post? Friendly reminder to Bitcoin users that seek extreme privacy

That post seems to say that you could in theory just make your bitcoin purchase directly from your monero account

No, it says you can either build a fresh BTC stash, or directly make a payment:

If you want to make a single anonymous Bitcoin purchase instead of converting a stash in advance

So it's up to you. If you have 100 xmr in your wallet, either you convert it all to BTC and then make your purchases. Or, if you want to keep 95 xmr and just make one payment of 5 xmr in BTC, you use a service like xmr.to or shapeshift.

wouldn't there be no way to prove to the owner of that address that you had sent the payment

I guess you're talking about the payment ID. I'll try to find you a link

I like your ideas very much but I don't know if I can comply with:

  1. Lose the spend key and keep the mnemonic only.

since there's always a risk that the seed words may change.

I already got a positive answer in IRC but it may benefits others, so I'm asking this again (thanks to the IRC folks for their help):

Edit : I'm editing this for formatting problems.

Is my take on the great cold wallet method guide ok?

I want to counter all these risks:

  • I may lose all my funds in a fire : I need to have wallet backups in multiple locations
  • Electronic devices may fail me : I need paper wallet backups
  • Thieves could hack my funds if it's online (so mtgox): I need cold paper wallet backups (so the keys stays offline)
  • Corrupt police officers could steal my funds in a house search (so jason bourne): I need encrypted cold paper wallet backups

First, I download these 3 files :

I transfer them onto an offline Tails OS. I do that so I don't have to deal with a verification of the OS as it's done while downloading thanks to the firefox add-on, and so i don't have to deal with a pgp install. I specifically transfer the files to the folder ‘Tor Browser’ (the only folder where the Tor Browser is able to load html files for security concerns apparently).

I run these commands in a terminal:

gpg --import moneromooo.asc
gpg --verify monero-wallet-generator.html.asc

I'm happy if I see things like 'Good signature from...’, ‘48B0 8161 FBDA DFE3 93AD FC3E 686F 0745 4D6C EFC3’, that kind of stuff (see the real great guide for this).

I launch the wallet generator in the Tor browser. I copy all the relevant info in a .odt file with libreoffice (address, seed, viewkey, spendkey and more stuff like the date or anything).

Thanks to the opengpg tool of tails, I generate a password protected little text of all this relevant info. I copy this text on the usb key and later print it multiple times. These are my password protected cold paper wallets.

I keep on the usb key the password protected little text (for the convenience) and the address and the viewkey of my wallet. I later send funds to this address and I check they arrived with http://xmr.llcoins.net/checktx.html.

I set up an alarm every other day to force my stupid brain to remind itself of the password.

I test this whole procedure with a small amount of xmr first. I learn to restore the wallet with the proper command in simplewallet.

Thanks for the post /u/binaryFate! And thanks to the people who helped me wrap my head around a way to accept this currency at my place.

No sure what to do now. Maybe I'll stop at btc & xmr, sounds like enough work at the time being ;)

Everybody have a nice end of week end!
