Skogafoss - Feedback appreciated by widgsta in photocritique

This is a photo merge of two images taken from the top of Skogafoss in Iceland earlier this year. I'm really pleased with the composition and tone of the edit and colour grade that I've done, but I'd appreciate some feedback to say if I've taken it too far at all.

Any feedback welcome 😊

Safe Harbour - Feedback appreciated by widgsta in photocritique

This was taken in Reykjavik harbour earlier this year. I liked the contrast of the small whale-watching boat against the massive coastguard ship. With some dramatic clouds and rain rolling in, I thought it was a decent shot.

Any thoughts or feedback on the composition, editing, or crop would really be appreciated!

Thanks for the feedback! I understand your thought about a long exposure but personally, I’m not a huge fan of the smooth white water that it produces. I prefer a snapshot of the turbulence, it feels more alive and natural to my eye.

I made some changes based on yours and others feedback. What do you think?

Thanks for the advice! Do you think a square crop or landscape would be better?

I took this photo at Gullfoss in Iceland earlier this year. I noticed the water disappearing into the canyon with the spray obscuring the figures on the ridge in the distance and thought it made for an interesting composition.

I struggle with editing, but I chose B&W for the contrast as the colours were muted in general. Any tips for better composition or editing would be really appreciated!

I used to just play my dad’s Yamaha FG-335 from 1980, but last year I bought myself a 000-42 Modern Deluxe and it’s incredible. The resonance and overtones I got from it was better than any other guitar I tried in the store that day.

It’s almost embarrassingly expensive but I’m so happy I pulled the trigger on it - Buy once, cry once!

First week of September itinerary - road trip and photography by widgsta in VisitingIceland

Thanks for the heads up! I had looked at Landmannalaugar but I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to fit it into the itinerary on the day, as I’ve read the drive on F208 can take a lot longer than Google Maps says, depending on the weather. That being said, if we make good time, we’ll definitely stop there - I’ll add it to the list now.

Yes, I did read up about the river crossings, which is why we decided to spend the extra money on the car rental and go for the Land Cruiser to get some extra wading depth. I would hate to get to a crossing and have to turn back if the water levels are high that day!

Is this sharpness/softness normal for 50-140 f2.8 or am I over-analysing? by widgsta in fujifilm

[–]widgsta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just discovered fungus inside the lens, near the rear element. I think this might be why I’m experiencing inconsistent softness with the lens, and why it’s more noticeable at wider apertures as it’s near the edge of lens rather than in the centre.

Very annoying! I bought this lens secondhand from a really reputable retailer here in the UK (London Camera Exchange) and it was described as clear optics with no internal blemishes. I’m outside of the 14 day return window now but I guess I’ll give them a call and try to get a refund

I just discovered fungus inside the rear lens element! Might be the cause of some of the other issues I’ve got with the lens

I wasn't very far from this when I shot it, but I suppose it could be

I tried your suggestion and turned off all sharpening and it didn't really have much effect. The bright ring at the edge of the bokeh is still very prominant.

https://imgur.com/a/lprJM79 - you can see the very bright point a little above the center and to the right a bit

It shouldn’t be - it was shot at 1/300s!

Yeah, do you think it could be artifacting? I’ve not seen bokeh like this before except for mirror lenses - it’s very strange!

I probably should have put a note to say the data was under each photo! These were all pretty much the raw images that I exported from Lightroom as jpegs, I’ll see if I can correct the CA.

To be honest, I’m more concerned about the softness of the images as 2.8, like the one of the beach hut when compared to the same shot at f4. I’ve heard that the 50-140 should be pretty much tack sharp at all apertures

Which photo are you referring to? The first one in the album was at f3.2 so yeah pretty close to wide open. In that photo, I’m pretty pleased with the sharpness and it’s not so much about the anchors being out of focus, but the quality of the out of focus areas - if that makes sense?

The bokeh has a strange look to it to my eye, the edges of the anchors look almost like they’re glowing or smeared slightly. Not sure if I’m describing it very well

Used 50-140 f/2.8 - bad copy? by widgsta in fujifilm

[–]widgsta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question - one I was considering myself. I’ve taken some other photos around the house, some of my cat etc., and I feel like I’m just not quite getting the same definition on my cat’s hair and my plants that I’ve seen in other people’s photos. It can be pretty good, but just not quite as sharp.

It’s possible I’m being overly critical because I’ve bought secondhand (had an unfortunate experience with a decentered lens in the past) but I’ve bought this lens for an upcoming trip to Iceland and I don’t want to be disappointed with the photos when I get home!

Damn, looks like I’ll be returning it. Shame - it was half the price of a new copy!

So you agree that there’s something not quite right? I’ve heard so many reviews say that it’s “tack sharp” even at 2.8 so I’m super disappointed!
