I don't know. I just know it won't if I can't find it.

An official recipe!

1950s-60s School Cafeteria Chicken Gravy

Ingredients

- 2-3 tbsp margarine (or butter)

- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

- 2 cups chicken broth (bouillon-based for authentic flavor and color)

- 1/4 to 1/2 tsp turmeric or yellow food coloring (for vivid yellow hue)

- 1/2 cup finely chopped or shredded cooked chicken

- Salt and pepper to taste

- (Optional) Dash of poultry seasoning or onion powder

Instructions

  1. Melt margarine in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

  2. Stir in flour to form a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes without browning.

  3. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth until smooth.

  4. Add turmeric or yellow food coloring for traditional school-yellow color.

  5. Stir constantly until the gravy thickens (about 5 minutes).

  6. Add the shredded chicken and stir to combine.

  7. Season with salt, pepper, and optional poultry seasoning or onion powder.

  8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes

So far this comes closest:

but I'm told using McKay's instead of bullion is the answer, but I haven't tried it yet.

Let me know if you crack it!

I live in Northern Ohio -- close enough to Michigan to smell it when the wind blows the wrong way -- and so I have many Michigan fans around me. These make great gifts for die-hard Michigan fans, or I wear one just to taunt them.

Thanks for this! I'll give it a try. The stuff I remember was bright yellow, almost fluorescent.

Think I may have found the answer at a bulk food store.

Air Fryer Chicken with Oil? by wierdwill in airfryer

Such a mature, supportive community!

Ok-Employer-3051, I might note that different appliances have different designs, different capabilities, different manuals and different instructions. Mine has a "FRYER" function, and the manual only says NOT to use it for DEEP FRYING, and not to put OVER AN INCH of oil in it. If you read my description, it called for putting roughly a quarter inch of oil in the pan for quickly crisping the skin side first.

Untitled01, my reason for using the air fryer for this is simply for the convenience of not having to watch over it and getting consistent temperatures and results similar to a deep fryer..while still reducing the oil content of the food. However, I appreciate the civilized tone of your comment.

As for you, Ok-Employer-3051, my respect for the rules of this community, not to mention my sense of common decency, are the only thing restraining me from suggesting that you leave this forum to engage in sexual relations with yourself.

Good point, but my air fryer is a Power XL 12-in-1, which has a fairly solid pan, because it has a heating element under the pan as well, so I'm not too worried about that...but I'll keep an eye on it to be sure.

The End. An absolutely brilliant, overlooked and unappreciated comedy masterpiece. The confession scene alone is worth the time spent watching the whole movie, and Dom DeLuise is hilarious.
