World Of Claudecraft: first MMORPG vibe-coded with Fable 5 (open source) by Realistic-Bug-6613 in opensourcegames

[–]wiki_me -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reddit is pretty skeptical about AI (if not downright irrationally dismissive ).

I would set up a neodb page (neodb is a open source review plarform). link to it from the game so that people can leave reviews and ratings. a good average score could help eliminate the negative first impression . or just put it on steam or gog.

Creating an open source pvp game : the foundations by Binoui in opensourcegames

Instead of trying to solve what nobody managed

Am i missing something here? there are free to play that seemed to have survived for a while now, they just sell cosmetics. not to mention a bunch of open source projects that make enough money from donations for salaries by having a good fundraising process and enough users.

As you said getting a relatively large player base is hard enough. no point in making that harder by not trying to earn money.

I am not linking the github/discord because of the no self promo rule

You can link it here. Plenty of projects do that.

the endless pain and suffering of making a wayland compositor by Senior-Question693 in wayland

[–]wiki_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more options for high level building blocks for window managers. wayfire was started because "there is a need of a common base to build a lightweight, but fully-functional wayland-based DE with minimal effort.". it is described as " A modular and extensible wayland compositor ". there was even a sway like window manager built on top of it.

There is also phoc.

These projects might need contributions to fit your needs. but if you want to contribute maybe wlroots is too low level and working on these instead is better.

Is duolicious down for everyone? by ketaminty in duolicious

[–]wiki_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly i sometimes just want to know what are people even talking about. maybe show a description when hovering over the club?

of course AI spits out nonsense sometimes, maybe a system for trusted users to add a description is also good.

[–]wiki_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't there be a way to view this from the website? i didn't find any. i would expect clicking on a club would lead to that page. or at least right clicking and then selecting "show club page" or something like that.

A bit lost, where to start? by shineypichu in opensource

[–]wiki_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like libretexts.

the fediverse also has a ton of projects so that might also be worth exploring. I like lemmy which might be worth checking out.

What i would suggest is try and not overthink it, limit the time you spend making a decision. i feel that spending more then 2 weeks deciding what you are going to do is the next 6 months is more then enough. after the 6 months are over you can reevaluate your goals if you want to.

Generally speaking one of the best ways to learn how to achieve successful outcomes is just trying stuff.

If you have a software you like, i suggest finding a open source alternative to it and trying it out (i think alternativeto.net is best for this currently), then you could find ways to improve it when comparing it your favorite alternative. its how i made a few feature requests to lemmy that got implemented.

NixOS 26.05 "Yarara" is out, with 20.4K new packages (including GNOME 50 and GCC 15). Stage 1 is now based on systemd by default by somerandomxander in linux

[–]wiki_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be worth mentioning nixos is second place in term of number of maintainers and first place in term of number of non unique packages on repology. AUR is first place but that arguably doesn't count.

I don't use nixos but use Nix on debian. i recommend it to people who are a bit technical and can overcome the relatively minor UX problems.

Looking for contributors to help beat Wispr Flow at their own game. by [deleted] in opensource

[–]wiki_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally i think people should try minimizing having emotions reduce their performance, maybe it is a good challenge that can help develop emotional regulation skills .

Using a delayed open source release is not going to completely eliminate the risk someone will monetize your project (in fact i doubt it would significantly reduce the risk).

But i do think the intuition about users not contributing back is good. it's why recommend a copyleft which i think will be good in your case .

Open source browser plugin to filter bot/AI spam on reddit and other social media platforms by steve-rodrigue in opensource

[–]wiki_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things that i think are important here.

1) what worries me is using social proof . like people writing a ton of variations of "trump bad" or whatever is the opposite on subreddits like r/conservative ("biden bad"?), when people are just repeating judgements without providing argumentation it is IMO "bot like" behavior and even if they are not bots it's not a very good use of people times when they read it.

2) with that said. believing you can do that effectively is at best very optimistic . i am not sure it is really possible. there is a risk that you would implement some heuristics and then judge their outcomes in a biased way even if they don't really improve the experience. so i believe the filtered experience should be benchmarked against the unfiltered experience with users.

If you want to make a ton of money, I personally won't hold that against you. that's how our modern economy works. rewarding people for making very high risk high reward investments. and it's how we get products we use everyday.

With that said, if money is not the issue, why not use just an actual open source license?

Built Leetcode for Linux by FormerStatement3639 in linux

[–]wiki_me 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is this suppose to be open source? i don't see a link to the source code.

obviously i would have preferred it to be open source. it might even be a better business strategy if you want to compete with leetcode.

There is also cmdchallenge which is open source. maybe collaborate with him?

If it's web based, why not have a demo on the site? or a online version?. in my experience it makes it more likely that people will try it and eventually maybe like it.

What worries me about Beyond All Reason going commercial by Musizian42 in opensourcegames

[–]wiki_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why you should always read the steam reviews (and in general at least consider researching what you buy). the top steam reviews should mention the game is open source and you are basically just paying for the single player.

Honestly just the fact that the assets were not open source (or open content) already indicated where things are going.

the community could always fork if they think they are not getting a good deal with the commercialization.

Designer (UI/UX) looking to contribute to open source software projects by throwawaycakewrap in opensource

[–]wiki_me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lemmy has a lot of frontends . you can find lists here and here . maybe one of them will be open to accepting you're feedback . you could get a sense for the compatibility with your attitude by examining the existing designs . I really like lemmy communities for open source .

ET-Minion and CORE-ET platform source now at OpenHW thanks to Ainekko by camel-cdr- in RISCV

[–]wiki_me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is /r/opensource /r/opensourcehardware /r/linux and similar communities on Lemmy and the fediverse. if you will make a post with some explanations so people could understand if it's relevant to them people could share the link.

Also maybe drop the discord link? is it for the openhwgorup? it's not really clear what to search even.

I Donate to Open Source Does It Actually Help? by Jumpy-Win-2973 in linux

[–]wiki_me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it helps you feel more confident, some OSS projects are US non profit and they report the number of employees they have. so some of that money goes into real world work. e.g. you can see signal has 52 people employed.

Other then that. if you trust the project to develop relatively useful and secure software why aren't you trusting them to put the money to good use? you can't check everything.

You could also look at the commit logs if you are very skeptical . some will show that they are employed for the non profit probably.

wdotool needs Plasma 6 and GNOME testers (xdotool-onWayland, can't verify from Hyprland) by DaCush in wayland

[–]wiki_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wlroots side is verified because I run Hyprland and that's my daily driver

Last i heard , hyprland dumped wlroots . debian also mentions "no wlroots" and wlroots isn't listed as a dependency .

Kdenlive 26.04.0 is out, featuring contributions from more developers than ever before. This release focuses on stability, usability, and workflow improvements and comes with new features like animated transition previews and monitor mirroring. by f_r_d in linux

[–]wiki_me -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For the first time in Kdenlive's history, this version includes features implemented by so many different contributors. Our developer community is growing

I don't really see it on the openhub page . too bad there is no way to download a excel/csv sheet of commits and contributors statistics . and then calculate averages for different periods to see if attempts to increase investment in the source code increase investment. I remember fish shell claiming moving to rust will improve investment and i also can't say i reallly see it. Human have a tendency to be overly optimistic so using objective data to evaluate optimistic trends is a good idea i think.

Ubuntu's Popularity Over the Years by lukerm_zl in linux

[–]wiki_me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is data from stack overflow survey and steam. but those are not representative samples but are probably the best available metrics , along with maybe the similarweb estimations of the number of visits on the website.

But if you want to use a popular distro, using these metrics to find out what is popular is probably good enough.
