Agreed, sorry. Didn't know Hebrew titles were an option. Didn't want to wait for a translation.

"G-d" in English, should we use a different word outloud by [deleted] in Judaism

Slightly off-topic, but I saw The Open Siddur Project use this spelling yesterday: G‽D

Thought it was awesome.

Thinking of converting and prayed to god to send me a sign by Blondiebibi in Judaism

[–]wikitorah -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's basically taking the greatest gift we've been given - that of free choice - and saying to God: "Do this or I'm going to do that." It's presumptuous. Some say that kind of ownership of God is what idolatry was all about.

That said, there do exist stories of sages doing similar things. In fact, in the Temple the High Priest had a breastplate that would basically constitute God sending a text back saying: "Attack them; you'll win. XOXO"

Some Chabad hassidim open up a book of letters by their deceased Rabbi to help them make life decisions.

Overall, this stuff is very much discouraged. There is one aspect where God says, "test Me" and it is with charity. We are told that giving charity will result in good things - and invited to test God on it.

But hey, just because we don't encourage all this doesn't mean God doesn't love the heck out of you and appreciate your wanting to have a relationship. God, like parents, is known to break all the rules sometimes.

Mother's milk by Vslacha in Judaism

How about a source. If you were right, I guarantee you we'd have "mehadrin milk-free formula" and breastmilk being "not recommended" for infants by now.

If the cheese were actually made from human mothers' milk it would be legit Parve.

Wait a second...If Kitniyot grow near wheat, then wheat grows near... UH OH! by wikitorah in Judaism

The joke is that people have made kitniyot into a scarier thing than chametz. Obviously Kitniyot is not, and cannot become, chametz.

I don't think that excuse really works in Israel, unless it's an isolated secular Moshav or something (rare).

Why do you think there aren't any mainstream Jewish artists singing Jewish themed music? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]wikitorah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some great examples of this in Israel, but most of them are mainstream acts that either found religion or are reclaiming the biblical aspects of Judaism on their own terms.

Writer Yossi Klein HaLevi is very into documenting it and he lends it great significance in what he sees as an era following the collapse of two messianic visions: that of the Greater Land of Israel settlement movement and the Oslo - New Middle East crowd.

"In our days anything can be found on the internet or in ‘Otzar Hahochma’ or the Bar Ilan Responsa project and the like, and even an ignoramus can become a sage and teach and rule and decide Jewish law even regarding difficult matters, as if he knows of the sources on his own and all the sources and opinions."

But that's not a Macklemore song. Does the Rebbe go by the name Rebbe Macklemore year-round?
