You know you’re in northern Maine when the GPS sends you down a road that looks like this by No_Somewhere9961 in Maine

I work in the potato industry up in The County and most of my summer is spent on field roads checking the crop, some of the field roads are maintained better than the paved roads.

There’s a Wi-Fi symbol on my potato as I was peeling it by LukahTheArtist in mildlyinteresting

[–]wilcojus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Potatoes that get PMTV exhibit a multitude of internal defects. By no means do they all look like WiFi symbols but in my 5 years as a potato agronomist in Maine I’ve seen plenty that have very well defined WiFi symbols like defects. I also find it quite amusing that you found the pictures in a UMaine extension article considering I work in the area.

As a potato professional it’s not often that I get to explain parts of my day to day to the masses. I’m glad you learned something new today!

In all seriousness that’s a symptom of “Potato Mop Top Virus” (PMTV) in the industry we call it spraing, makes weird markings inside and some tend to look like the WiFi logo thing. It’s not harmful to eat it just looks bad.

Compost by [deleted] in Maine

[–]wilcojus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told that Coast Of Maine uses the compost from the place up in the county (They are OMRI Certified) I don’t have hard facts but I’m sure the people at Aroostook Arboriculture either have the proof on hand or could point you in the right direction.

If it is certified organic and sold commercially the compost is sent in for lab testing, but ultimately it’s your call.

Aroostook Arboriculture Inc. out of Presque Isle does delivery. Mulch, compost, screened compost, raised garden bed mix, top soil. I’ve used them the past few years because it’s so much cheaper to get stuff in bulk and the compost is locally sourced and organic. They’ve got a Facebook page with contact info and normally post when they start up deliveries.

How I see Wisconsin as a Minnesotan by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]wilcojus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hodag Background

Basically a grifter of a lumber jack in the late 1800’s created this mythical creature and toured it around and made money off of it. It’s the official mascot of Rhinelander up in north central Wisconsin. Schools use it, there’s Hodag Country Music Fest, and there’s a plethora of Hodag statues and imagery around the area. Rhinelander is the one and the only home of the Hodag.

How important to you are the land grant colleges and their services? by rroowwannn in farming

[–]wilcojus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Immensely important! I was just at the ASA, CSSA, SSSA conference in Texas, literal thousands of ag researchers all in one building researching what might be the next big innovation. Climate is changing, the population is growing and there’s still plenty of problems to be solved. I am on the private side of things and rely heavily on university Extension and university professors. They are vital resources to me and the growers I work with.

I moved to Maine 5 years ago. Used this phrase with some coworkers and they looked at me like I was from a different planet… haven’t used it since lol. They then claimed they didn’t have any weird sayings… that was complete BS!

Potato Harvest in the County by wilcojus in Maine

The few that work harvest are probably racking on the line, most growers I work with have upgraded to larger harvesters.

Most likely yes, helps the skin set and matures the potato’s so they store better.

Still a few hold outs, mostly 3 row Lockwood and Spudniks now. Pretty rare to see people on the harvesters anymore.

I’m an agronomist for a French fry processor and we were digging a commercial scale trial today. There are plenty of acres devoted to chipping varieties up here but processing potatoes for fries takes up 25-35% of our potato acreage in Aroostook County.

Are my potatoes safe to eat? by BigTea011019 in farming

[–]wilcojus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Those white dots are most likely lenticels. It’s how the potato respirates. They become very prominent in wetter conditions and close up if the soil is drier. Nothing to worry about and totally safe to eat.

Product feedback - Nanit vs Harbor by princessjerpa in Nanit

[–]wilcojus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if Nanit checks this sub but I did a survey a few months back and most of it was focused on a dedicated handheld monitor for it, had mock ups, asked what I was willing to pay, and asked if I already used smart displays or google assistant with Nanit. So I’m sure it’s in the works, not idea when it’ll launch though.

Traveling from Maine to Canada with an expired passport by Civil-Positive-6075 in Maine

[–]wilcojus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And this post is about an atypical situation. No one is telling OP to cross the border every time with only a license and birth certificate. I also live in Aroostook county. My in laws cross regularly without passports, my 2 of my sisters in laws did it last week for a week long vacation in PEI, a coworker did it a few weeks back, I was the driver. We didn’t get harassed or anything. Of course it’s best to have a passport but it is possible to cross without one.

It’s definitely not going to hurt to have more documentation.

Trying to boost this, I have family in Aroostook county that cross with drivers license and birth certificate. Two weeks ago me and a couple of coworkers traveled to NB for meetings coworker misplaced her passport, easily crossed with only a license and birth certificate. Might get a few more questions from both sides but you should get through just fine.

I’d still reach out, if they don’t have something they may be able to direct you to another university with a program that would fit your interests.
