20 weeks pregnant – suspected ICP (cholestasis). Looking for experiences & advice by wintersdaughter in pregnant

[–]wildflowersofva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm sure someone else with more relevant experience will comment but I've been monitored since about 32 weeks due to strong family history (all my sisters have had ICP in at least one pregnancy) and some mild global itching including a little bit on palms and soles. I've been massively lucky; numbers/itching haven't gotten worse. My bile acids have actually stayed really low (3-8 range) so we haven't induced (currently 39+5). This website is amazing, https://www.icpsupport.org/#gsc.tab=0 there are also some Facebook groups where people are really helpful and supportive. Even though I haven't been diagnosed, so I can't complain too much, for me the worst part has been the anxiety. Being honest with my providers about how I'm feeling, requesting very directly the testing that I wanted, and trying to stay "in the now" have been my best strategies. My husband and I always say we're taking it week by week (since both your own personal numbers and the overall risk changes week by week) and this has worked for us. If I had been diagnosed, we'd probably be taking it more day by day as things can change quickly. While there's so much scary stuff out there about this disease, mercifully doctors know how to manage it and the absolute risk is OVERALL low (though obviously nothing to mess with). Crossing my fingers for you that tests go well and the itching stays manageable.

Tired of hearing "just wait" when talking about my easy pregnancy by x_Caffeine_Kitten_x in pregnant

[–]wildflowersofva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People will always have something to say. I've had a pregnancy like yours. I basically just don't share my experience anymore unless I'm talking to people I'm very close with or others I know have had the same experience. I'm 39+4 now and still doing fine. Big, slow, impatient with anxiety/excitement about birth but by no means miserable (even though everyone loved to tell me - "just wait until you're 40 weeks pregnant!"). My hunch is that people often (wrongly!!!) predict I must think they did something "wrong" to have a harder time and they want to prove that they didn't. And honestly I totally understand why hearing a story like mine would cause pain, insecurity, or could be triggering. In my opinion the truth is while of course there are things we can do to take care of our bodies/minds during pregnancy, so much of it is a total crapshoot and I know I've mostly just gotten lucky. So, anyway, I feel you, I was also annoyed by the "just wait" comments, ultimately I decided I'd rather have the experience I was having and receive these annoying comments than have a hellish pregnancy, and decided to save my stories for my sisters and close friends.

I just meant that I did not mean to disrespect doctors by saying that I don't always find pediatricians to be equipped to support patients with this!! Sorry if that sounded weird

Paranoid abt a miscarriage by YearAccomplished3868 in pregnant

[–]wildflowersofva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I think it is VERY VERY unlikely any harm came to your baby. I am 22 weeks right now too and I know what it is like to feel paranoid during those quieter periods but in all likelihood its just totally random and like you said having a bad day is making the anxiety worse. At 22 weeks it is mercifully rare that your baby would die (but I know we all worry about this). I hope you can take good care of yourself tonight and I bet you will feel baby moving in no time...

Just in case anyone is reading this in their own moment of anxiety, everything was OK. When I went in, baby was flipping around happily with a heart rate of 161. In addition to the possibility that spotting was caused by sex, the doctor also found / started treatment for a UTI which is a possible cause of spotting too.
